In this project, I worked with a group to create a fashion and travel magazine that included a feature on hot spots in Cuba as well as popular fashion trends that would work well for this vacation location.

7. VB: How long have you been practicing yoga?
CG: 10 years - 8 super consistent years
VB: Okay, so what does yoga mean to you then?
Since you’ve been sticking with it for so long.
CG: To me, yoga is a lifestyle. It is so much more
than just a physical practice. It’s being kind, patient,
and compassionate towards everyone and
especially yourself. It is living an honest, open,
and understanding life. It means practicing non
attachment and contentment. It means NOT
living in comparison and being able to see, love,
and encourage the strengths and beauty in others.
VB: If you had to use one word to describe your
yoga journey what would that be?
CG: Mindfulness. Because I think that would
encompass almost everything. From being
mindful with your movements and body, your
breath, and meditation, to bringing mindfulness to
the everyday tasks like washing dishes or walking
through downtown Savannah. Creating and
cultivating mindfulness has enriched my life more
than I could have thought possible.
VB: From the teacher point of view, what is the
best thing you’ve learned?
CG: Oh man this is a tough one! I am constantly
learning as an instructor. I think it is very important
to always keep a student mentality. But I think the
best thing it has taught me is that challenging and
confronting your fears, that living outside of your
comfort zone, is always the path I should take.
VB: So in more of the way of feeling and emotions:
since beginning yoga then have you noticed shifts
within yourself? Like in your perspective, mind set,
or self image?
CG: 1000% yes! I have overcome a TON of
insecurities and learned a self love that did not
exist before. I am so much more grateful for all
of the little, overlooked things in life (think hot
showers or a roof over my head). I am a far more
patient being. I feel as if I am able to much more
easily see the good in people and situations and
am able to let go of thoughts and things that
don’t serve my wellbeing. Yoga has taught me
how to positively shift and mold my thoughts
in ways that benefit an authentic happiness. I
care less about what others think, I am far less
materialistic, and I am more able to create
boundaries and say no when I need to.
VB: And in what mind set do you notice yourself
needing yoga most in? More when you’re anxious
or having a bad day?
CG: Yes and yes! Seriously though, I think those
go hand in hand! When I am having a bad day or
going through a tough personal time, I have a
tendency to isolate, as many people do, and I find
that is when I need to go to yoga more than ever.
And not just to practice, but to connect with a
like minded community.
VB: What words would you use to describe the
way you feel upon completing a class?
CG: Zen AF!! Clear, calm, accomplished,
connected, and happy.
VB: In your experience as a student and a teacher,
do you think yoga helps with mental health?
CG: Absolutely yes! As a student, practicing yoga
is a moving mediation for me. It is a chance to
not dwell on thoughts that I at times can’t seem
to get rid of. It allows me to cultivate a positive
C A S E 1 3
8. mindset that may have been lacking before. As
a teacher, I feel like it is extremely important to
make students feel valid and welcome just as they
are. There is one yoga sutra that stands out to me
as being quite a life changer, book two sutra 33
(my own interpretation, and there are thousands
out there) - for every negative thought, cultivate
a positive one. Seems simple but it is deceivingly
hard! The parallels between yoga and therapy
have been kind of astonishing to me. I work with
a psychotherapist and do a lot of CBT (cognitive
braintherapy)andthatisprettydamnsimilartothat
sutra. Changing your perspective and shifting your
vision. Our thoughts can have so much control
over our lives so it is very important to not only
be aware of what we are thinking and how we
talk to ourselves, but to have the tools to be able
to change and manipulate our thoughts for the
benefit of our own peace of mind and happiness.
VB: So, last but not least, since teaching yoga
have you noticed a shift in the emotions of your
students who seem to come to yoga reoccurring
and consistent?
CG: Well, you may have to ask them…but yes, I
suppose so though. Since I do try to get to know
our students personally, I am able to see how
they’ve taken steps towards growth and how
they make positive shifts in their lives. I know of
several students who love the community and
atmosphere that DDY has cultivated and feel like
they are being encouraged and inspired by our
teachers and staff. My favorite moments with
students is when I share a personal struggle during
class and they come up to me after and tell me
they are going through something similar and
thank me for sharing my story. I think being open
and vulnerable as a teacher is very important
because it can remind others that they are not
alone while creating a connection or bond that
was not necessarily there before.

10. Take a Vacation From
Your Fitness Routine
Story: Shayna Salzman
Beingonvacationdoesn’tmeanthatyourworkout
has to stay at home. Beach workouts can be the
perfect way to change up your workout routine
while also being a different way to relax while on
vacation.Anearlymorningworkoutandextradose
of sunshine can be a great way to start your day!
You don’t need to bring anything to your beach
workout either, just your muscles and motivation.
Fromrunningtoacircuitworkout,toyoga,youcan
do a wide range of different workouts on the sand
that will add resistance to your body while training
muscles that you usually don’t have the chance to
work on. There are also many benefits to beach
workouts for your health on body. Running on the
sand has less impact on your body which makes
the workout easier on your joints. Beach workouts
are also fun and functional. You can be on the
beach and still enjoy the scenery of your vacation
but also not neglect your workout routine. The
beach offers a more functional workout because
exercising on the sand incorporates the element
of balance into every motion. When you are at
a gym, you must balance your body with the
amount of pulling, pushing and lifting in order to
not overwork certain muscle groups. The sad is
a diverse way to challenge your body while not
isolating different areas of your body. By freeing
yourself from your routine, you open your mind to
new ways to move your body, have fun and keep
your body fit while you’re on vacation.

11. Another important aspect of beach workouts
are that they strengthen the part of your body
that is the most essential for balance and most
of your everyday activities: your core. The
unleveled aspect of the sand will engage your
core more in order to get your body adjusted
to the surface and balance. This can also help
your balance on even ground. This will also
benefit you and your vacation by working
on your abs for the perfect swim suit body.
On the other hand, if you don’t work out at all
during your vacation, you can get out of sync with
your workout routine when you return to your
everyday life. Depending on your body type, you
can lose muscle and endurance fairly quick. Aerobic
power can decline 5-10 percent in three weeks.
The fitter you are, the faster you lose your fitness.
Finding a way to stay active during your vacation
will make the transition back to real life a lot easier.
Fashion Workout Tip: In order to get best workout
out you can while on your vacation, it is very
important that you stay comfortable. Embracing the
new age of smart fabrics can keep you comfortable
while getting in a work that is worth your while.
Smart fabrics are a little different than what one might
think. Smart fabrics in athletic wear focus on getting
you the best workout and recovery you and your
muscles need to stay healthy. However, different
athletic or even daily activities requires different uses
of your muscles. Running mainly focuses on using
your thighs, hamstrings, and calves, while lifting or
high intensity workouts rely mostly on your core.
Body mapping with smart fabrics can be defined as
having determined where the body need the most
air circulation and wicking, and having strategically
placed technical fabrics in these areas to get the best
workout results. Body mapping technologies also
use a different kind of construction called Cut-and-
Sew garment construction. This technique allows
designerstochoosewheretheyplacespecificpanels
and layers to create higher zones of compression
and to also show the natural contours of the body.
Wearing fabrics that are aerodynamic and light in
order to get the most movement and flexibility.
Companies like Fabletics and their UltraCool
leggings or Lululemon and their Everflux apparel
are great examples and places to go to get this
kind of workout gear. The Ultra Cool Leggings
from Fabletics The Ultra Cool legging is sleek
and aerodynamic which keeps the fabric cool to
the touch. While it smooths supports the body,
the legging also has a satin finish that is what help
keeps the fabric cool all day. The Ever Cool Everflux
adapts hotter climates, faster movements and
dripping sweat. They used a fabric mix knit and Lycra
that is efficient at wicking away sweat and drying
fast. It is also cool to the touch and touch sensitive.
It keeps you cool by pulling in the sweat and heat
away from your skin and disperses it throughout the
fabric so that it evaporates. Smart fabrics enhance
overall functionality of apparel in many ways. It
can communicate, transform, and grow for our
bodies. These enhanced textiles are outlandish
and functional take on what clothes can truly be.

12. Here are some tips in order to get the most out of
your beach workout:
1.Always warm up first: You need to get your muscles
loosened before starting any workout. You need to
get your body adjusted to the attributes of the sand
before you can start to run or do other types of
circuits. A good way to warm up on the beach is to
start down by the water and do some jogging strides
uphill. This will prepare your body for any other kind
of movements in the sand.
2.Track your heartrate: Some people use Fitbits or
their Apple watch to track their heart and monitor
when it comes time to start the workout.
3.Locate lifeguard towers and other kinds of
landmarks on the beach: While this is also helpful for
safety purposes, using the lifeguard towers or other
landmarks on the beach, such as umbrellas, for sprints
can be a good way to get in a short workout if you
don’t have time to work out your entire body.
To help you get started, here is a sample beach
workout from HeathWay for you to try on your
next vacation:
•10 lifeguard tower sprints (sprint to one tower and
jog back)
•10 push-ups
•10 block jumps
•20 bicycle crunches (on an incline coming up from
the water)
•20 skater jumps (10 on each side)
•25 regular crunches
* Perform each exercise back-to-back with no rest

14. Accessories can really make or break an outfit.
Weather it’s a simple t-shirt dress or utility jumpsuit,
accessories can elevate the look to the next level.
Earrings, bags, scarves, necklaces, they all play a
part. Here is an inside look on the hottest trends
for the upcoming summer season.
The first trend is PEARLS. They have been so hot
this spring and are not dying down for summer.
One great way to incorporate pearls into your
accessories are with barrettes (another hot
summer trend.) They are a big statement and
give your look a very elegant vibe. This trend
is awesome because it can cross over into so
many different outfits. A day look with a bright slip
midi dress and then transitioned into night with a
sleek little black dress and heels. Its a versatile and
effortless way to incorporate fun trends into your
wardrobe.

15. The next trend is WICKER everything! Wicker hats
have always been a thing. In the past, we always
thought of it as a look for an older woman to wear
at the beach. As of late, this trend has resurfaced
and made it’s way into the luxury limelight. Various
celebrities have been seen wearing wicker hats in
avarietyofways.Inthesameway,youcantakeone
with you for your summer at sea and incorporate
it into your looks. They pair great with a neutral
jumpsuit or maxi dress but you can also add a pop
to it yourself. Take a hair scarf or piece of ribbon
and tie it around the brim, it’ll give it a little bit of an
extra push and make it unique to your style.
The last trend highlight is small bags. People have
been dying over these from the streets all the way
down the runway. Small bags are a great summer
accessory because they tiny and easy but still fit
your phone and a lip gloss. Again, whicker has
been a featured material for these bags. It’s fun
lightweight and really just screams summer! The
best thing about this, and really all of these trends,
is that they fit in your suitcase really easy. They
don’t take up a lot of space so you can bring a few
to incorporate into your looks once you get there
and you really don’t have to worry about it. It isn’t
bulky so you can give yourself options, which is
ultimately what we all want and need on vacation!

17. Vera Wang launched a swimwear series for
women who are going on their honeymoon. But
they are not limiting their products to strictly these
women, anyone who wants to follow this trend or
loves to be beautiful can buy their swimwear. The
name for the collection is NATARE, a latin word
meaning “to swim”.
Vera Wang is launching an embellishment
swimwear series called “Be-deck” as well as started
to develop a swimwear series featuring the lace
trend called “Femme Filigree.” The swimwear
market is expanding and the demand for
swimwear is growing. However, the requirement
for swimwear is becoming more strict. In the past,
an ordinary swimsuit would satisfy people’s needs,
but now consumers are more concerned about
the design and unique appearance of swimwear.
Especiallyawomanwhoisgoingonahoneymoon

to her husband and feel gorgeous.
Laceswimsuitsisanothernewtrendforswimwear.
This type of lace swimsuit is based on the basic
swimsuit silhouette but made with a lace fabric
or featuring lace throughout the suit. It makes the
swimwear look elegant, more fashionable and
unique.
The lace swimsuit is also perfect for people to
buy when they are traveling to a tropical place. Of
course, you need the perfect suit for you beach
vacation! People want to show their vacation bod
off and a unique swimsuit does just that. Lace
swimsuits are perfect for this because it shows off
the the curves of your body with tight fabrics.
People enjoy sitting under the sunshine, walking
on the beach, walking on the plush sand, or plunge
into the clear waters. During vacation, people
forget about the stressors of home and enjoy the
holidays. At the seaside, people dare to throw
away all the precautions and shame, wearing
swimsuits with less fabrics, and show a flirty sexy
side. Embellished swimsuits can accentuate your
body by dousing it in the beads, giving off a luxury
feel.
With these unique designs, you will not be seen
in the same suit as everyone else on the beach.
Because after all, who wants to be seen in the
same outfit as someone else? Everyone wants to
be unique. Laced swimwear is different in design
from regular swimwear, and this new trend will
take your style to the next level. Not all women
have lace swimwear because it is a new trend and
exclusive at this point- you will be seen as a trend
setter!
And now the swimsuit is not limited to swimming
pools and beaches. Wearing a swimsuit be not
only to go swimming or to the beach, but also
as a top at parties and or a bodysuit with a pair of
shorts. The lace swimsuit can be worn on different
occasions or with different clothes. For example,

More and more brands are involved in the swimwear
market, including swimwear brands, and they are
beginning to design and produce swimwear. These
brands not only produce ordinary swimwear, but
are also committed to swimwear fashion, making
swimwear more interesting and better looking. Vera
Wang is a representative brand; their main products
are wedding dresses, but they launched a swimwear
series which is called NATARE. NATARE is a Latin
word that means “to swim”. We are fortunate to have
the founder of the Vera Wang brand today. I sat down
with designer Vera Wang to discuss her upcoming
collection, NATARE.
S: Hi, Vera Wang. Nice to see you. Can you introduce
yourselfandyournewupcomingcollectionNATARE?
V: Hi everybody, I am Vera Wang. I am a fashion
designer and I have my own brand called Vera Wang.
We are famous for wedding dress and we are a high-
end brand for brides. I used to be a fashion editor and
I worked in Vogue for 16 years. I also served as the
clothing director of Ralph Lauren. In 1990, I opened
my own store in Manhattan, and in 1992 I launched
a ready-to-wear wedding dress. In 2005, I received
the “Best Women’s Designer of the Year Award” from
the CFDA. In 2010, I designed wedding dresses for
formerUSPresidentBillClintonandHillary’sdaughter.
S: Why are you interested in fashion and engaged in
the fashion industry?
V: I was born in Manhattan, New York. My mother
often took me to Paris to attend various high-end
fashionshows.Mymother’sloveforbeautyhasagreat
impact on me. Although my childhood wish was to
become a great figure skater, our family moved to
Paris when I was 19 years old, which changed my life
very much. I love skating very much, but I was not
selected for the national team. Even if I lost, I still want
to do something for my favorite skating. I thought
of designing a costume for Nancy Cregan. Since
1992, I have designed some winter sports uniforms
for the American women’s team. I have gained some
popularity.MyfashionroadstartedfromtheOlympics.
S: Why did you become a wedding designer?
V: The reason why I became a wedding designer
was because I spent a lot of time choosing wedding
dresses but still couldn’t choose a satisfactory
wedding dress, so I came up with the idea of
engaging in wedding dress design. I think that for a
woman, the most important moment in her life is to
hold a wedding, which is the beginning of a woman’s
dream.Idreamofbecominganoutstandingartistand
making wedding dresses a work of art. I think fashion
is a metaphor of life. They are people’s emotions and
joys and lives. For a woman, a wedding dress is the
simplest aspect of dressing up, and the rehearsal is a
prelude to future marriage. So the wedding dress is
very important for a woman.

from Vera Wang would like to buy swimwear from us
for their honeymoon. Honey moon is also important
for a women. Every woman wants her honeymoon
to be sweet and beautiful. They chose our wedding
dress because they want the brilliant design and
high-quality products. We can provide them with
high fashion design and high quality swimwear.
S: What’s the fabric you used for swimwear?
V: It is high quality spandex.
S: Why do you call this series Be-deck?
V:ThemeaningofBe-deckistodecoratesomething.
It is a Latin word. This is trend is about embellishment
so Be-deck is a perfect name for this series.
S: Why do you think be-deck is an important trend?
V: Embellishment is a big trend for bride swim wear
and embellishments could show details of design
well. Women like well-designed and beautiful things.
If the swimsuits can also have exquisite and beautiful
decorations, it will definitely attract a lot of people.
S: When will you launch this series?
V: It is for Spring/Summer 2022.
S: How much for one swimwear? What’s the starting
price?
V: It is started at $1500.
S: Who is NATARE Target Customer?
V: They might be the businessmen, dignitaries, super
stars, celebrities who has a high social status, their
lifestyle is low-key and luxurious, they do not like the
exposuretothepublic,andtheirconsumingbehavior
is concerned to satisfy their life pursuit as an
enjoyment. They might be the starlets, less famous

they would often buy the high street brands. Or they
could be people who usually shop in the high street

and they do like the Vera Wang brand as well. There is
no elimination for target customers, it doesn’t matter
who they are.
S: Why do you think this series can attract customers

24. She Sells Seashells
(earrings) by the
Seashore
Story: Hannah McAleer
Withsummerjustaroundthecorner,newaccessories
are a must for those long, thought about, vacations.
Jewelry collections will be all about making a
statement. The nautical trend from the past will be
reborn and be bigger and bolder than ever before.
As Spring 2020 hits, there will be a need to go back
to the true delicacy and uniqueness of an object; to
uncover what is often overlooked. It will be about
cherishing natures true gifts and seeing it as art rather
than merely focusing on its functionality. These
collections will be unique, fun, and bold.
The earrings of the All Washed Up collection,
focuses on highlighting the beauty in what is often
overlooked or taken for granted. It’s taking what’s in
front of you, like a seashell or piece of sea glass, and
utilizing its beauty to create wearable art. To often we
get distracted by modern advances that we take for
granted and never learn to cherish the natural beauty
that is right in front of us. We forget that, just like us,
natures lifespan is relatively short and we need to
appreciate and treat it respectfully.

25. As children, we spend hours at the beach finding joy
in the search for that perfect seashell or seaglass. We
are filled with pure happiness and love for the beauty
of the ocean and what it offers. As we age, we tend to
lose that childlike wonder and fascination over life’s
littletreasures.Wefeeltheneedtomatureandfollow
in our cultures preset paths. In 2017, there began a
change of direction. The nostalgia of childhood
started to trickle back and we started to remember
how fun it was to wear shell earrings and necklaces.
Through these natural beauties, the buyers inner
child will be allowed to reemerge. This summer-like
accessory will move past the one season only stigma
and find its way to being applicable for every season.
As humans we often assume that the world around
us is eternal, never ending. The fact is, like humans,
nature has a lifespan. Similar to humans, nature starts
to decay, rot, break and wither away. It is a delicate
gift that we need to hold close to our hearts. This
collection will makes us appreciate what is typically
disregarded. This new trend will showcase and
open our eyes to the delicacy, beauty, and wonders
of the ocean. The jewelry collection, although not
promising timeless quality, will connect people to
thenaturalbeautyofouroceans.Thisfeaturefocuses
on the dreamy cockle sea earrings. The beautiful
shape of this earing fits nicely on the ears, guiding
one’s attention towards the face. The boldness of the
earrings allow customers to either be adventurous
with their wardrobe or stay simple, allowing the
earrings to be the statement. These earrings show
the true essence of this trend. Our accessories are
designed to evoke feelings of adventure, boldness
and sheer enjoyment, while also allowing you
to show off your appreciation for natural beauty.
Instead of being life long statements in your jewelry
collection, these will come with an expiration date
forging a deeper appreciation for each piece. The
jewelry, in a way, takes the buyer on a journey; a life’s
journey.

29. Boating in the NUDE
Story: Victoria Burns
When we think yachting, our mind instantly goes to
flowing maxi’s with bright colors, bikinis with sheer
cover ups, and bold statement pieces. This seasons
yacht trends are anything but. Neutrals are taking
over the nautical scene by storm. White linens and
nude silk slip dresses are coming to the forefront.
This is due to the idea that understated is more. A
lot of celebrities have been doing this in a variety
of ways. One that stands out is the monochromatic
look. A hot way to do this is with an all white utility
suit paired with a pair of white or nude shoes. It still
makes a bold statement with the all white suit but
keeps it classy with a simple shoe.
This understated neutral trends is not only taking
over the catwalk but streetstyle as well. There is a
new wave of all white or all nude designs seen by
variousdesignersandfastfashionretailersthatareall
the rage. Those like Hailey Baldwin and Bella Hadid
have pioneered this trend with all white utility suits,
matching point toed heels, and tiny sunglasses. This
was heavily seen in the winter but did not die down
into the spring and now summer. The only things
that are changing are the materials and weights of
the garments.
Anothertrendseenontheboatscenearelightfloral
slip dresses. The silk materials of the slip makes the
look elegant and tailored, but still trendy with the
floral. Slips were a really hot item this spring and are
going to carry on into the summer months. This is
especially great because it’s so lightweight. When
on vacation on tropical areas like Cuba, you base
your attire around something you won’t sweat
anymore than you already might when you have it
on. This is a breathable look that you can wear on
the boat, the beach, or even to a casual dinner.

31. It also transitions into other months, especially fall.
With a neutral slip, you can layer a sweater over top
for a completely different look. This piece is a great
investment that you can carry through various
trends and weather.
The last highlighted trend is linen. It is an absolute
MUST for a boat and beach vacation. Like other
trends, it’s lightweight but can be done so many
different ways. A linen wrap dress is a great piece
just to have in your suitcase for an upcoming trip. It
can be dressed up for dinner or down as a coverup
over your bathing suit. A linen wrap dress gives you
instant breathability and elegance, a luxury look
but available for half the price. It goes great when
you are boating to places like Cuba because it is so
colorful and vibrant there, and a toned down dress
will actually stand out more than you may think.
Linen is the ultimate summer go to because it is so
lightweight. There’s a lot of breathability to it and
offers versatility. Lightweight blazers and shorts are
just two simple ways that linen are used for summer
garments. They also can transition into the early fall
and spring which is such a bonus. A linen wrap dress
is a great way to incorporate trendy pieces into at
sea attire.

Beach cover ups are also a great use of linen. It’s a
little bit sheer yet can can be formed into a lot of
great pieces. The neutral tones of linen- cream, light
brown, and blush, also offer this ongoing trend of
neutrals. Nude tones work great as transition pieces
as well which is why they are a good investment
for the summer months. As prior mentioned, you
can transition them into other seasons. Garments
like a white utility suit can easily be dress for fall in a
fashion forward and trendy way then accessorized
based on the trends of that season.
All of these trends are understated, neutral tones,
that make big impacts. There is no better way
to elevate any of these trends with statement
accessories. Small sunglasses, wicker bags, and a
widebrimhatjusttonameafew.Trendyaccessories
can be low cost which is also a bonus because they
are trendy and you may only wear them a few times.
The highlight for this season at sea is a pearl
barrette. They are classy and elegant but also really
fun and edgy. You can pair this with a lot of different
outfits including all of the trends mentioned. But
also transition into evening wear- it goes great with
a LBD and a pair of strappy black heels!
Overall, neutrals are this seasons way to go. You
will look your best and stand out among the cooler
tones of water and vibrant, bold colors, of our
featured country, Cuba. Utility suits, linens, and slip
dresses are easy to pack in your suitcase and bring
a bold statement to your vacation looks. Not to
mention, they are lightweight which is exactly what
you need when you go to a tropical place. What’s
worse than wearing the best outfit but sweating
the entire time? Take the understated route your
next beach vacation with these key trends that are
bound to have you looking the best at sea.

37. You just got off the plane and hoped on the yacht,
waiting for a cold drink in your hand, looking forward
to a relaxing week. But, have you ever thought about
the employees working behind the scenes? The
crew that makes sure you get to you destination
safety, you have everything you need the second you
want it, and creates a relaxing atmosphere for you? I
sat down with Joey Ziebell, a crew mate for a private
yacht, to get the inside scoop on all things that go
down below deck.
HM: How long have you been working on yachts?
JZ: I have been working on yachts for about 1 year
now.
HM: How did you get into yachting?
JZ: My mentor and former employer spent a portion
of his career crewing yachts in the private industry. I
was perplexed at that time about what career path to
choose but coming from a maritime background it
seemed like an opportunity that I could fully commit
to.
HM: Describe your average day as a yacht crew
member?
JZ: In all positions abroad a private yacht the task is
demanding 24/7. This simply means that anyone
can be working in all areas of operation in order to
facilitate a smooth running boat. Days in which we
are traveling consist of light up keep of the vessel and
standing navigational watch. Standing watch means
navigating the boat to where we are going safely.
While we are waiting for either charter guests or the
owner of the vessel the boat has to be maintained

at all times to a 7 star standard. Stewards on the
interior will keep the boat to absolute perfection
while exterior crews will keep the outside of the
boat to perfection as well.
HM: What type of training did you have to
accomplish before being able to become a yacht
crew member?
JZ: Having gone to a maritime academy I studied
manydifferentfieldsregardingallmaritimeshipping
and operations. I had to learn about not only
the physical driving of vessels but also the safety
aspects such as firefighting and advanced medical
treatment. These items prove to be important
but also learning how to work with others in tight
quarters while insuring our fiduciary responsibility
to the owner.
HM: When you are docked at locations, do you
have time for yourself or are you always working
24/7 on the boat?
JZ: The yachting industry is considered 24/7
because the boat must be kept to a standard that
would allow us to be operational at a moment’s
notice. With that being said yes crew members
typically find time in their busy schedule to explore
the different destinations that they spend time at.
HM: What is your favorite place you’ve traveled to
while working on a yacht?
JZ: My favorite place that I have spent a lot of time
in would be Newport, Rhode Island. I’ve enjoyed
Newport because it always feels like vacation
while at work but also for the fact that it is so close

38. to my home .
HM:Whatisitlikenotstayinginoneplaceconsistently?
JZ: For me in my current situation it is extremely
enjoyable because I get to travel in luxury while
getting paid (he laughs)
HM: What is the hardest thing about being a yacht
crew member?
JZ: The hardest thing about being a yacht crew
memberisdealingwiththeunforeseen.Thiswouldbe
referenced to an environment that has no schedule
and things occuring that are out of my control.
HM: What challenges have you had to overcome
from being a yacht crew member?
JZ: Some minor challenges I have had to deal with
would be being away from my love ones for long
durations and never knowing what tomorrow could
bring.
HM: How many crew members are working at one
time? And what are their positions?
JZ:ItalldependsonthesizeoftheYachtbuttheboats
I have worked on generally consisted between three
andfive.ThepositionswouldstartattheCaptainwho
has absolute responsibility which is then followed by
theMatewhooverseestheremainingcrewmembers
which are deckhands and stewards. On larger boats
there can also be Engineers, Chefs, and Bosuns.
HM: Do you believe that each position in the crew is
as important as the next?
JZ: Yes, every crew member has duties that they need
to fulfil that are all equally important. In yachting it is
imperative to have a smooth running crew and when
one part of the whole is not operating up to standard
the entire operation is effected. Many crew members
come and go for reasons such as this.
