CloudStack 4.19 introduces a new framework for object storage. In this talk, Vladi explains what has driven this development, the architecture chosen and current integration points with Object store providers. ----------------------------------------- The CloudStack Collaboration Conference 2023 took place on 23-24th November. The conference, arranged by a group of volunteers from the Apache CloudStack Community, took place in the voco hotel, in Porte de Clichy, Paris. It hosted over 350 attendees, with 47 speakers holding technical talks, user stories, new features and integrations presentations and more.

Block storage - divides the data into blocks of equal
sizes (SAN, iSCSI, local disks)
File storage - uses shared file systems (NFS, SMB)
Object storage - a data storage architecture that
manages data as distinct units, known as objects
(Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Google cloud).

The primary form of storage used in cloud computing
infrastructure.
Each object contains:
The actual data
Metadata
Unique identifier
Uses flat address space – no hierarchy.
Usage scenario – large amounts of unstructured data.

Object storage in CloudStack
Coming in the next ACS LTS release 4.19.
Currently only MinIO is supported as provider.
Easily integrate S3-compliant object storage providers.
UI browser for managing the data.
Only root admin can manipulate the object storages.
Users and domain admins can create their own
buckets.
The underlying object-storage provider is responsible
for flexible storage management, multi-site replication,
security, and backup.

Object storage in CloudStack – the future
Adding support for more object storage providers –
CEPH for example.
It could replace the secondary storage one day.
Possibility to use it for backups.
