This document discusses the perceptual properties of sound that are important for film, including loudness, pitch, and timbre. Loudness refers to the volume or amplitude of vibrations, with louder sounds perceived as closer. Pitch is the highness or lowness of a sound which can distinguish objects and serve specific purposes. Timbre is the harmonic components or "color" of a sound, such as a voice or instrument being described as nasal or mellow. These properties shape the experience of a film's sound track and how it directs attention and interprets visual elements.
3. The Powers of Sound

moment when I add the
sound..At
this moment, I tremble.”

6. Perceptual Properties
Several aspects of sound as we perceive it are
familiar to us from everyday experience and are
central to film's use of sound.
• Loudness
• Pitch
• Timbre

7. The amplitude, or breadth, of the vibrations produces our sense of
loudness, or volume.
Loudness is also related to perceived distance; often the louder the sound,
the closer we take it to be.
Film sound constantly manipulates volume.
For example, in many films, a long shot of a busy street is accompanied by
loud traffic noises, but when two people meet and start to speak, the volume
of the traffic drops.

10. The harmonic components of sound give it a certain color, or tone
quality-what musicians call timbre.
When we call someone's voice nasal or a certain musical tone mellow,
we're referring to timbre.

11. Loudness, pitch, and timbre interact to define the overall sonic
texture of a film.
Loudness, pitch, and timbre also shape our experience of a film as a
whole.
