2. Film Noir
• American films of the forties
and fifties, primarily in the
mystery, suspense and
detective genres, nearly all of
them are black and white.
Originating out of Europe
after WWII, the 1940s and
50s saw the rise and huge
success of the Film
Noir genre on the silver
screen.
The look is still popular today,
in such films as “Neo-Noir”
• Black Swan,
• Drive and
• Sin City
Lighting as Storytelling: Film Noir

6. One of the highlights of lighting as storytelling is the
era of film noir
Best known for its low-key lighting
• Side light
• Chiaroscuro
• Shadowy
7. Technical innovation
• Sensitive, finger grained black and white negative e]film
• Lenses better suited for darker shooting conditions
• Smaller , mobile camera dollies
• Cameras light enough to hand hold
• Portable power supplies
All perfected during world war 2, alleviated many of the logistical
problems previously connected with location filming.
8. Those enabled film
makers to get out of-
• The dark, mean streets of the city
with its shadowy alleys fraught
with unknown dangers,
• Blinking neon lights reflected on
rain soaked pavements
• All of the mystery and menace of
the city after dark
• These tend to force
cinematographers to experiment
9. • Birth of the protagonist who is not clearly
define as purely good or evil.
• Contradiction and alienation
• Pulled between good and bad, light and
dark, illumination and shadow
• Reflects the confusion and sense of lost
ideals
• Those returned with the veterans and
survivors of the war
10. • “zeitgeist” of the times_not all
things can be known
• What is unseen in the shadow
may be as significant as what
is seen in the light
11. Zeitgeist
• Zeitgeist is the spirit or essence of
a particular time
• Zeitgeist is a word that comes
straight from German
• zeit means "time" and Geist means
spirit, and the "spirit of the time" is
what's going on culturally,
religiously, or intellectually during
a certain period.
