1. Eradicate Extreme
Poverty and Hunger

2. How does this resonate with you?
 My parents were born and grew up in the Philippines and immigrated to the
U.S. in the 1990s. When I was growing up I often heard stories about my
parent’s childhood. My father was fortunate enough that his family had started
a business and were very successful and often did not have to worry about
food, whereas my mom was less fortunate. My mom often told me how most
days they only had rice and some vegetables and on rare occasions had meat
to eat. Her and her siblings would walk a far distance to water since their
house did not have running water. It wasn’t until they were able to move to
America that they had the money to eat good food and running water in their
house. I’ve been to the Philippines many times growing up, you can find many
kids begging for money and food there. You can see older kids carrying their
younger siblings because their parents are at work and can’t afford for them to
go to school. Hearing stories about my mom’s childhood and visiting the
Philippines, I’ve been a witness to extreme poverty and hunger.

3. How can your interest be applied
locally?
 I think that there are many opportunities in our community that could help
with poverty and extreme hunger. I’ve volunteered many times at the
Tacoma Rescue Mission. TRM provides shelter for the homeless, safe
places for women and children, and food for the people in need. There are
many other places in Tacoma you can volunteer at like at the food bank or
St. Leo’s. Volunteering isn’t the only thing you can do I believe that
donation is a big part and helps organizations like these to keep running
and helping more people everyday.

4. Where can you personally make the
greatest contribution?
 I think the place I can make the greatest contribution is the Tacoma Rescue
Mission. I live very close to it and there are 3 different locations that you
can volunteer at. This is the place I’ve volunteered many times and I really
enjoy donating my time to this organization.

5. Is there a feature of social media that
can be uniquely applied to this goal?
 Sharing is a feature that is big on social media that could be applied to
goals. The use of sharing spreads out the message far more then what
word of mouth would bring. It allows users to share organizations and
online websites to donate like GoFundMe to their friends and family. It is a
cheap and easy way to share this goal.
