LESSON 2
METHODS OF PHILOSOPHIZING
I. TRUTH VS OPINION
• In discussing truth, it is important to clarify knowledge since it is through knowledge,
we can determine what is true.
• KNOWLEDGE- It pertains to ideas & beliefs that we know to be true.
• Man is believe to have knowledge in anything if he can explain, identify, give
examples, relate an idea or concept to other ideas or concepts.
II. HOW DO WE KNOW IF SOMETHING IS TRUE?
RENE DESCARTES-“ “Doubt everything that can be doubted”.
• SYSTEMATIC DOUBT- To determine TRUTH
• nothing is taken as truth unless there is sufficient reason and evidence to prove that is
indeed truth
III. BASIS OF DETERMINING TRUTH
1. A belief is true if it can be justified
or proven through the use of ONE’S
SENSES.
2. A belief or statement is true if it is
based on FACTS.
3. Getting a consensus or having people agree on a common belief.
Note: This is another way of determining what is true. But this approach has certain
limitations. Getting everyone to agree on something may not make the belief true.
4. A statement should be proven through an action to determine its truth.
Example: If you brag about your skills in baking cakes, you should know how to do it and
the quality of a product will speak to itself.
5. Claims and beliefs should be subjected to tests to determine truth.
Example: So when you say that you have understand the lessons well. One way to prove
it is you pass the TEST given by your teacher.
IV. BASIS OF DETERMINING TRUTH
As we encounter different information from various resources, Philosophy can help us
filter them, determine the truthfulness of its claim through the use of:
✓ Doubt
✓ Senses
✓ Facts
✓ Actions
✓ Test
V. DISTINGUISHING OPINION FROM THRUTH
• FACTS- statements that can be checked or back up with evidence. It is verifiable from
observation and experience.
EXAMPLE: The Philippines, as proven in geographical and anthropological properties,
is a country in Southeast Asia. (SOURCES)
• OPINION-Is an expression base on emotions, beliefs, and views. It is the basis of
making arguments and convincing people that certain claim is a fact.
Example: “My boyfriend is the most handsome man in the world”. (BASED ON
EMOTIONS/FEELINGS)
• Remember: Factual, undisputed, objective, universal, exact and constant are
manifestations of truth. It implies that it can be proven as true. Knowledge must be
truthful to gain validity and acceptance.
VI. SOME TERMS IN FACT AND OPINION
• CONCLUSION-It is a judgement base on certain facts
• BELIEFS -This are statements that express convictions. They are not clearly explained
by facts.
• ARGUMENTS-This are statements that can provide reasons, convince the reader or
listener that an opinion is truthful.
VII. METHODS OF PHILOSOPHIZING
✓ Is a process of determining the truth or drawing a conclusion from a statement using
various philosophical method.
• SOCRATIC METHOD
“elenchus”- to inquire or to cross examine
The Socratic method was derived from the Greek philosopher, Socrates. In order to delve into his
students’ view, he would ask them questions until any contradictions were exposed. Socrates also used
this method of questioning to encourage people to question the things they were told and to look
beyond the obvious.
• DIALECTIC METHOD
“dialektike”- the art of conversation
-a discourse between two or more people holding different points of view about a subject but wishing
to establish the truth through reasoned argumentation.
-a method of examining and discussing opposing ideas in order to find the truth.
OPINION TRUTH
• SCIENTIFIC METHOD
“scientia”- to produce knowledge
-the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation. The basic process
involves making an observation, forming a hypothesis, making a prediction, conducting an
experiment and finally analyzing the results.
• HISTORICAL METHOD
“iotopia”- to investigate/to find out
-The term historical method refers to the collection of techniques and guidelines that historians use to
research and write histories of the past.
