ENGLISH 7_Q4_LESSON 2_ Employing a Variety of Strategies for Effective Interp...
Evaluation Task: Question 2
1. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
Evaluation Task: Question 2
2. Main Genre for our Short
Film
The main genre chosen for my short film was horror/thriller. This is illustrated by the use of props, costumers,
locations, photography and other element features. These featured elements were effective and consistent
throughout my print products and short film as we ensured this by taking the use of images used throughout
filming. The house style as well as the colour theme for the 3 media text were also consistent as throughout,
you can see the use of red, black and white being repeatedly used for the film poster, film review and the short
film itself. This is used to indicate that they are linked together as they all portray and illustrate the genre of
horror/thriller since the colour scheme appear gothic and haunting by the use of such dark and bold colours.
Also, we can see the use of black and white being used in the title text at the end scene of the final short film so
the use of colour scheme is used throughout.
Critical Theory: The theory that was consistent throughout is the representation of bullying. The narrative
story of the short film contains the beginning, middle and the end- as it illustrate the story of Priscilla and how
she was bullied or picked on by a peer, called Diana. This portrays how often bullying can happen in
schools/college and is often by someone either the same age as you or older. In society, teenagers often picks
on people who are less fortunate in terms of looks and money as they tend to make fun of them and even
through social media networking sites e.g. cyber bullying.
And It also tells us a hidden message that when you bully or pick on someone based on your own personal
entertainment, karma will get you back depending how far you’re willing to bully someone whom less fortunate
than you are.
3. The use of Colour Scheme (House Style)
The style used is gothic yet it appear effective at the same time as it comes along with the use of red, black and
white- all bold and dark colours to represent the genre of film, which is horror/thriller. This is consistent
throughout the project is an attempt to bring the short film to life. It is also included on the film poser, film review
and short film over all.
We have decided to go through a haunting yet significant look which would make the audiences feel thrilled and
shocked feel with a clear structured layout to go along with it. However, the use of font style was not consistent
throughout the 3 media text as we have seen various other film with their poster and film review where they did not
maintain using the same font style in order to make it unique but it was still knowledgeable and significant in a
professional way. We felt like using different font style but still having to maintain to give the gothic yet more
significant look would bring more audiences attraction this way. Either way, it still had worked well throughout.
We have used ‘Welcome to the Punch’ film review from one of our case studies as we have used the same structure
of where to position and place the captions and sub headings as well as the still images. In the end, it worked out
well as it seemed appropriate and appealing to have similar structure that is easy to read the context as well as
knowing where each feature is, such as the images, star rating, title and so on.
The lighting used for our film poster challenges the conventions of our case studies but we felt that it has worked
effectively in the end. Also, the use of images in our short film goes against the convention of Jamie Foxx film
review as I mentioned I will be using a full image on one page but in the end, I have used two medium still images
placed on both side of the pages but it still appear significant and blended well for a horror/thriller film review.
4. Locations & Mise-es-scene
Notes
The locations we used were chosen significantly as well as carefully because we wanted to make it
clear and understandable to target audiences on which part of the short film are meant to be shot
for a horror/thriller films. Our own college was chosen to be taken place for the locker and toilet
scene because we felt that it will be time consuming as we don’t have to travel that far to go to our
main location as we can just stay in college and film as we will have extra time during our break time
as a group. Also, the use of toilet is very common use of location when it comes to shooting
horror/thriller film hence past films like Orphan, The Ring and The Unborn Child. This is where
the use of artificial light is used as you will get a dramatic effect of fear when the light get dimmer
and dimmer.
The second location chosen is Geneva’s house, in her bedroom in order to represent a typical girls
bedroom in the present day, this was also illustrated from the props and costumes as well as the
make up of Diana. And finally, the third location used is in Abotts Park. Often in horror films, they
use locations where it is quite isolated yet and where no ones there. It will give a sentimental feeling
as well as it can build up once we see the only people there are the victim and the suspect, which is
in this case, the enemy versus the victim. For example in western cowboys film, they go outside the
bar and stand before each other, two characters locking their eyes together ready to shoot one
another as no one is seen but them. This is similar situation to our short horror/thriller film in the
end.
5. Distribution Methods
The distribution methods would benefit and add value to the short film in term
of advertising the horror/thriller film to a wider range of audiences. Also, the
use of the short film being uploaded on YouTube will gain and gather more
younger audiences as it allows them as well as fans to interact with the cast as
well as the directors, producers and editors of the film. This is also when
advertising the short film to Facebook as well as Instagram as it will be more
effective and increase the amount of views and comments on YouTube.
Critical Theory: David Gauntlett- web 2.0 suggests that audiences can now be
their own producers because of video sharing website like YouTube, we can
create and promote our own identities and influence the identities to other
people who will watch our short film and being able to change society for the
best.
6. Interlude
The establishing shot of the college really set the scene and to begin the narrative in
order for the audience to keep on track and hold on to the narrative part of the short
film. This has flowed naturally with the print products because the horror/thriller genre
is continued throughout the film. The film poster image used is to present to the
audiences what the enemy looks like so they will be able to expect seeing her dressed in
black, gown with her long curly hair covered in blood as well as wearing her gold
bracelet. This is to keep the audience associate with the short film and being able to
interact with the use of image to help remember the motive of the short film.
Critical theory: Barthes theory suggests how the characters interlude keeps the narrative
processing as the role sand action throughout the video and they usually are presented to
be the main characters of the video throughout that is why they are consistent and keep
the narrative in process throughout the beginning middle and end of the film.
7. The Hidden Meaning of
our Short Film
The short film promotes a positive message as it does not support the campaign of bullying and does not
tell the audiences to get influence on bullying someone or even if you’re a suspect of getting bullied, then
you should self-harm or commits suicide; that is NOT the message we were trying to get across. We were
trying to portray how bullying is often taking places in school and colleges or even universities, where
parents think it is a safe place to keep their children to be educated but in terms of their social life, it is not
going well.
The representation of both of the characters are common as one portray the enemy, which it
was Diana and the victim is Priscilla and a flashback is included to illustrate how Diana was
laughing hysterically whilst Priscilla is sitting down with her head down trying to lock herself
away from the world. Diana is represented as independent and brave young lady whilst
Priscilla is portrayed weakling. However, we were able to see a twist in roles as Priscilla comes
back to haunt Diana down after everything she has done through her power to bring Priscilla
down and for not once, leaving her in peace.
This is a unique selling point because even though the past brings back such hatred memories,
it would still has a positive influence on young girls and boys to stop bullying and make the
world in society a peaceful and safe place to live for everyone.
The representation of horror/thriller by the use of red, black and white- effective and gothic
which would make the audience feel petrified and nerve wracking.
