1. GENRE
What is genre in film?
The genre within film is chosen based upon the characteristics that can be recognised as a
particular genre. This can include the characters, mise-en-scene, soundtrack which all may
provide a certain atmosphere which conveys that particular genre, it is also based on the
similarities either in the emotional response or the narrative elements. Genre is a way in which
audiences can decide what they like and what they dislike.
2. Why is genre
important?
Genre is important within film because it provides a
template to help them create their film this is due to
every genre having specific codes and conventions which
will repeatedly come up. For example, the genre Horror
will always provide suspense, tension and a sense of
jeopardy so when creating a film with the genre Horror it
is crucial that these elements are included. or within
action adventure films the mise-en-scene will commonly
include a gun or some kind of advanced gadget such as in
Avengers Infinity War. Moreover, it is important to convey
the genre of the film they are trying to promote as all
audiences have a preferred genre so this helps in
attracting audiences who favour the genre of the film you
are promoting. British cinema favour some genres over
others, some genres have also evolved from earlier days
of film.
3. My own
production
For our own production we have come to a collective
decision that our genre is going to be Thriller. After doing
some research into this, using Scoop.it as well as
analysing films within this genre I noticed that they
consistently included not only suspense and a sense of
jeopardy but also included a message in which they
wanted their audience to highlight and be aware of. When
it comes to creating our own production, we must ensure
we include these elements and the codes and conventions
that are typically used within Thrillers, however, I ideally
would like our production to be unique and something
which includes a twist within. Editing will be crucial in
conveying our genre further as the use of hard cuts and
use of non diagetic sound will help in building suspense
which is the main element that helps an audience know it
is aThriller.
