1. In what ways does your media product, use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
EVALUATION QUESTION 1
• Our media product uses the forms and conventions of a science fiction film
by using mainly the effects and narrative of a science fiction film. In our
film we have edited and used different effects to show that it’s a sci-fi. Our
film is titled ‘ENIGMA’ which helps with the genre as ‘enigma’ means ‚a
person or a thing that is mysterious, puzzling or difficult to understand‛.
From our research we’ve found that there are specific ways to film a sci-
fi, such as the camera shots, mise en scene, editing and sound.
• From my research I found that the best way to express your genre to an
audience is in the opening of the film, If the main genre is already obvious
then the type of sub-genre. For my film we have chosen a Sci-fi film with a
sub-genre of Adventure.
• Our main film inspiration was ‚Chronicle‛. It is a story about a group of friends who
encounter a mysterious cave, then later realise that from the cave they obtained
telekinetic abilities from this unknown object within the cave. They first began to use
their powers for mischief and personal gain until one of them uses them for darker
purposes. This is a found footage film as we also attempted making one which is our
‘First Shoot’. We then decided that it was a better idea to stick to regular camera shots
as we wanted to stick to the genre because found footage is usually used in horror
films, it also made it easier for us at the editing table.
• My film didn’t challenge the conventions of a science fiction film as we
tried to fit in into a science fiction film and suit the genre. Something
different in our film is that it starts from present day then transpires into
a flashback, a government tape is then shown to show the audience the
actual happenings of the night.
The conventions of including teenagers was kept as we had to represent
social groups, this was done from representation through clothes and
speech.
• And that is how my media products, use and develop conventions of real
media products.
