2. Se7en
This shot from the opening sequence of "Se7en", immediately this
shot engages audience members and makes them question many
different things. The dark shadow over one hand adds tension to
the shot and makes you wonder whose hand that really is. This
shot sets the audience up for what they can expect for the rest of
the film. The writing in the shot is shaky but still visible reinforcing
the dark atmosphere created from the shot.
This shot reinforces the eeriness of the title
sequence, the outline of a person with
blacked-out eyes creates a sense of unease,
it makes you cautious about watching on,
but you feel inclined to watch on to see
what these images really entale.
3. Se7en continued...
Immediately, the titles on this shot stand out, they are visble and follow
the same pattern as the previous ones shown in the sequence.
However, these titles are overpowered by the peculiar image behind
them which show eyes being covered over by what seems to be a pen,
this suggests many things such as death, which sets up the audience
for the rest of the movie.
4. Drive
This opening shot from Drive establishes the location for
the audience allowing them to form different views about
what this movie might have within it. The skyline picture
shows that it is going to be held in a big city, stereotypical
of neo-noirs allowing the audience to discover the genre if
they weren't already aware of it.
5. Drive Continued...
This low angle shot is a typical convention of film noir/neo
noir, immediately establishing the genre. The titles then follow
this shot allowing the audience to form an understanding of
the film and what to expect before showing any of the titles,
this is something that could work in our opening sequence as
it would allow to create enigma before adding the titles in.
6. Drive Continued...
The low-key lighting of this shot helps the titles to stand out in the
shot, however, it draws attention to the male character in the shot
and makes you wonder where is he going? At this point the music
is fairly quiet creating suspense for the audience as you continue
to think that something is about to happen making you want to
continue watching to see if it does, it engages with the audience
well.
