The Study of Chemistry
Macroscopic Microscopic
3
The scientific method is a systematic
approach to research
A hypothesis is a tentative explanation for a
set of observations
tested modified
4
A theory is a unifying principle that explains a
body of facts and/or those laws that are based on
them.
A law is a concise statement of a relationship
between phenomena that is always the same
under the same conditions.
Atomic Theory
Force = mass x acceleration
5
66
Chemistry is the study of matter and the
changes it undergoes
liquid nitrogen gold ingots silicon crystals
Matter is anything that occupies space and
has mass (three states; solid, liquid, and gas)
A substance is a form of matter that has a
definite composition and distinct properties.
Can be defined by their appearance, smell, taste, and other properties.
At present, over 20 million substances are known.
77
A mixture is a combination of two or more substances in
which the substances retain their distinct identities.
1. Homogenous mixture – composition of the
mixture is the same throughout.
2. Heterogeneous mixture – composition is not
uniform throughout.
soft drink, milk, solder
cement,
iron filings in sand
88
An element is a substance that cannot be separated
into simpler substances by chemical means.
• 117 elements have been identified
• 82 elements occur naturally on Earth
Gold, Aluminum, Lead, Oxygen, Carbon, Sulfur
• 35 elements have been created by scientists
Technetium (Tc), Americium (Am), Seaborgium (Sg)
9
First letter always capitalized, but second is never capitalized Some elements
are derived from their latin names. E.g Au (aurum), Fe (ferrum), Na (natrium),..
1010
A compound is a substance composed of atoms of
two or more elements chemically united in fixed
proportions.
Compounds can only be separated into their pure
components (elements) by chemical means.
lithium fluoride quartz dry ice – carbon dioxide
1111
A Comparison: The Three States of Matter
Solids: rigid
objects with
definite shapes
Liquids: less
rigid than solid
and are fluid,
they are able to
flow and
assume the
shape of their
containers
Gases: are
fluid but unlike
liquids and
they expand
indefinitely
1212
A physical change does not alter the composition
or identity of a substance.
A chemical change alters the composition or
identity of the substance(s) involved.
ice melting
sugar dissolving
in water
Hydrogen burns in air
to form water
Types of Changes
1313
An extensive property of a material depends upon
how much matter is being considered.
An intensive property of a material does not
depend upon how much matter is being considered.
• mass
• length
• volume
• density
• temperature
• color
Extensive and Intensive Properties
14
Matter Summary
15
What is a Measurement?
Quantitative observation
that associated with
numbers and units.
The study of chemistry
depends heavily on
measurement.
Devices
The meterstick: measures length
The buret, pipet, graduated cylinder, volumetric flask: measure volume
The balance: measures mass
The thermometer: measures temperature
These instruments provide measurements of macroscopic properties
Microscopic properties: on the atomic or molecular scale (indirect
method)
17
Units
• Without an associated unit, a measurement
is without meaning.
• SI units (metric units,International System).
1960
• In french
Système international d'unités
18
The Standard Units
Derived SI units
e.g. Area, Volume, Speed, acceleration,
density, Force.
Volume (Length)3
SI: m3
1 mL = 1 cm3
3
20
Related Units in the
SI System
• All units in the SI system are related to the
standard unit by a power of 10.
• The power of 10 is indicated by a prefix.
Common Prefixes in the SI System
Prefix Symbol

Pico- p 0.000 000 000 001 Base x 10-12
22
Density
• Inverse relationship between mass and volume.
• Solids = g/cm3
1 cm3 = 1 mL
• Liquids = g/mL
• Gases = g/L
• Volume of a solid can be determined by water
displacement—Archimedes Principle.
• Density of solids > liquids > gases
Except ice, it is less dense than liquid water!

Temperature Scales
Three Scales
ºF (degree Fahrenheit)
ºC (degree Celsius)
K (kelvin); absolute temperature (SI unit)
Scientific Notation

Addition or Subtraction
1. Write each quantity with
the same exponent n
2. Combine N1 and N2
3. The exponent, n, remains
the same
4.31 x 104 + 3.9 x 103 =
4.31 x 104 + 0.39 x 104 =
4.70 x 104
2.22 x 10-2 - 4.10 x 10-3 =
2.22 x 10-2 - 0.41 x 10-2 =
1.81 x 10-2
Scientific Notation
Multiplication
1. Multiply N1 and N2
2. Add exponents n1 and n2
together
(4.0 x 10-5) x (7.0 x 103) =
(4.0 x 7.0) x (10-5+3) =
28 x 10-2 =
2.8 x 10-1
Division
1. Divide N1 and N2
2. Subtract exponents n1 and n2
8.5 x 104 ÷ 5.0 x 109 =
(8.5 ÷ 5.0) x 104-9 =
1.7 x 10-5

  • 6. 66 Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes liquid nitrogen gold ingots silicon crystals Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass (three states; solid, liquid, and gas) A substance is a form of matter that has a definite composition and distinct properties. Can be defined by their appearance, smell, taste, and other properties. At present, over 20 million substances are known.
  • 7. 77 A mixture is a combination of two or more substances in which the substances retain their distinct identities. 1. Homogenous mixture – composition of the mixture is the same throughout. 2. Heterogeneous mixture – composition is not uniform throughout. soft drink, milk, solder cement, iron filings in sand

  • 9. 9 First letter always capitalized, but second is never capitalized Some elements are derived from their latin names. E.g Au (aurum), Fe (ferrum), Na (natrium),..
  • 10. 1010 A compound is a substance composed of atoms of two or more elements chemically united in fixed proportions. Compounds can only be separated into their pure components (elements) by chemical means. lithium fluoride quartz dry ice – carbon dioxide
  • 11. 1111 A Comparison: The Three States of Matter Solids: rigid objects with definite shapes Liquids: less rigid than solid and are fluid, they are able to flow and assume the shape of their containers Gases: are fluid but unlike liquids and they expand indefinitely
  • 12. 1212 A physical change does not alter the composition or identity of a substance. A chemical change alters the composition or identity of the substance(s) involved. ice melting sugar dissolving in water Hydrogen burns in air to form water Types of Changes

  • 15. 15 What is a Measurement? Quantitative observation that associated with numbers and units. The study of chemistry depends heavily on measurement.
  • 16. Devices The meterstick: measures length The buret, pipet, graduated cylinder, volumetric flask: measure volume The balance: measures mass The thermometer: measures temperature These instruments provide measurements of macroscopic properties Microscopic properties: on the atomic or molecular scale (indirect method)
  • 17. 17 Units • Without an associated unit, a measurement is without meaning. • SI units (metric units,International System). 1960 • In french Système international d'unités
  • 18. 18 The Standard Units Derived SI units e.g. Area, Volume, Speed, acceleration, density, Force.
  • 20. 20 Related Units in the SI System • All units in the SI system are related to the standard unit by a power of 10. • The power of 10 is indicated by a prefix.
  • 21. Common Prefixes in the SI System Prefix Symbol Decimal Equivalent Power of 10 tera T 1,000,000,000,000 Base x 1012 giga G 1,000,000,000 Base x 109 mega- M 1,000,000 Base x 106 kilo- k 1,000 Base x 103 deci- d 0.1 Base x 10-1 centi- c 0.01 Base x 10-2 milli- m 0.001 Base x 10-3 micro- m 0.000 001 Base x 10-6 nano- n 0.000 000 001 Base x 10-9 Pico- p 0.000 000 000 001 Base x 10-12
  • 22. 22 Density • Inverse relationship between mass and volume. • Solids = g/cm3 1 cm3 = 1 mL • Liquids = g/mL • Gases = g/L • Volume of a solid can be determined by water displacement—Archimedes Principle. • Density of solids > liquids > gases Except ice, it is less dense than liquid water! Volume Mass Density 
