MANAGERIAL SKILLS
Management skills are various characteristics that every leader should possess in an
organization. These skills help and facilitate smooth functioning of the business. These
different attributes help to perform specific tasks in the organization to fulfil different goals
and targets. Every manager or a leader should possess these skills so that they can take the
business to a next level with fewer hurdles. The following are the six most important
managerial skills that any leader should possess to meet their organizational goals and
targets:
Technical skills
Interpersonal skills
Conceptual skills
Communication skills
Time – Management skills
Decision making skills
I am currently working in Tory Burch as a sales associate in the Toronto Premium Outlets. I
really admire my general manager, Ivana Busic. She is such a passionate and goal driven
individual who I always look up to. she has diverse transferable skills and has a very good
2. understanding of the industry. She possesses the following skills which I think makes her the
best in her field.
CONCEPTUAL SKILLS- I think this skill involves critical thinking and the ability for abstract
thinking and idea formulation. Ivana has always been able to formulate a creative and easy
solution for every problem. The most important issue that retail sector faced in the
pandemic was less traffic and less sales, but Ivana made sure that our store does not face an
such issue. She adopted the method of Text- To- Shop where customers at home can shop
from the store through text message or virtual calls. They can directly text the store if they
want to know any price for a product or know what bag is on promotion etc., she always
thinks out of the box. She introduced GWP (Gift with Purchase) scheme in the store to
stimulate the customer to buy more to get the gift. So, she always comes up with these
lucrative ideas to increase conversion and sales.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS- these are the skills that enable leader to make an efficient and
effective use of the human potential in the company and motivate the employees and build
a relationship with them. Ivana, makes sure that she personally greets, meets, and talks to
every employee in the morning with a smile on her face. She makes it a point to give an
hourly update to every employee of how they are feeling. She conducts MTB’s (Monthly
Touch Base) for every employee at the end of the month to personally interact with them
and motivate them. She also periodically arranges contests for the employees so that they
are motivated to sale more. She arranges a contest where the sales associate with the
maximum amount of sale gets a free bag from the store. She motivates all employees for
better results.
3. TECHNICAL SKILLS – these are the skills that are learnt during the tenure of a manager or are
acquired through training. Ivana has great technical skills. The way she delivers
presentations during sales seminars is just amazing. She makes sure that each employee
gets a chat- In before their shift which includes guiding the employees how to maintain the
KPI’s during the day. She also has the great knowledge of running all the software’s required
like salesforce and makes sure that she uses them to the best of her abilities.
Decision- Making skills- These skills are very important for a business to function. The
manager should have a great decision-making ability. Ivana is a good decision maker and a
quick one. She does not waste time and takes adequate steps in case a situation arises. Few
days back we had a positive Covid case in our store, so she made quick decisions on the
procedure and patiently tackled the situation.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS- this the basic management skill that every manager should have.
Ivana has effective communication. The way she greets customers, listens to them patiently
and addresses their problem is something which should be learnt. She uses the TED formula
( THINK, EXPLAIN AND DESCRIBE) in order to help her customers and sell the product.
The skills in the which she can do better are
TIME MANAGEMENT SKILL- time management is important for any operation of the
business. Ivana has good time management skills, but she can improve in this area. There
are instances where there is delay in closing the store and even opening the store. There
4. have also been scenario’s where employees had to stay extra hours beyond their shift
because she had to prepare reports without which employees are not allowed to leave the
store. So, I think this area can be improved by her.
According to me the skills that are my strength are Conceptual skills because I always think
outside the box. I have been working in the sales for a long time and it is not easy to sell.
One needs to think creatively to sell. I always think differently. I have the highest sales every
day and make almost double my target and this is solely because I use the technique of
suggestive selling and think creatively. I also have great communication skills. I understand
the customer needs and provide a solution. I maintain relationship with my client so that
they return.
The skills that I need to improve are Time management and decision making because
sometimes I make decisions hastily which gets me into losses.
