3. Introduction
•MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a type of scan that
uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce
detailed images of the areas inside the body. It is useful
in evaluating abdominal soft tissues as well as blood
vessels, abscess, fistulas, neoplasms and other sources of
bleeding.
•MRI is an non-invasive procedure and it utilizes no
ionizing radiation that could damages the tissue, but
instead it produces images by using a magnetic field and
radio waves.

5. Types
• There are two types of MRI machine:
• Open MRI:
0pen MRI is for claustrophobic or overweight individuals, more
conveinent type of scanner .But the quality of image is not good as
compared to closed MRI.
• Closed MRI:
It has a largetube surrounded by a magnet where the patient is placed
on the sliding table and then slide into the tube.

7. Indication
• Bone and soft tissue tumors
• Cerebral vascular Accident
• Hemorrhage
• Hearing loss
• Visual disturbance
• Unexplained Neurological symptoms of deficit
• Mappping of brain function
• Intracranial diseases and trauma
• Congenital heart diseases
• Lessions of liver, pancreas and bile ducts
8. Contraindication
• Metal implants like pacemakers
• Pregnant women
• Cochlear implants
• Allergies to contrast (eg. Gadolinium)
• Kidney diseases
• Gross obesity
• Claustrophobic
• Parkinson’s disease
9. Nursing Interventions
• Take the consent and keep patient NPO for 6-8 hrs before the test.
• Explain the procedure to the patient and help to remove all
jewellery and other metals.
• Its is very important to warn patient may induce feeling of
claustrophobia and that the machine makes knocking sound during
the procedure.
• This procedure is contraindicated in patient with metal implants
and who is pregnant.
• The entire procedure takes 30 to 90 minutes.
• Observe any sign of allergies due to contrast media
10. Advantage
• It is an non-invasive procedure .
• MRI uses no ionizing radiation.
• High quality soft tissue contrast resolution
• Multi –plan imaging without repositioning the patient.
Disadvantage
• Expensive compared to other scans.
• More time consuming.
• Dangerous for people with metallic devices placed within the body.
• Slight movement can ruin the images.
• Difficult to preform on claustrophobic patients.
