• Attract new donors for your cause 
• Raise public awareness and attention of your brand 
• Attract corporate sponsors 
• Market-test project ideas 
• Hot topic and getting a lot of media attention!
Lesson #1 
• Be clear on your goals for crowdfunding 
Match your campaign length to your fundraising 
goal 
• Try to raise at least ½ of your funds from 
your supporters ahead of time
Lesson #2 
Research crowdfunding sites that fit your 
organization 
Use sites like crowdcrux.com, nolo.com, forbes.com/sites
Lesson #3 
Match your campaign to your target 
audience 
– Crowdfunding is popular among Gen X and 
Gen Y
Lesson #4 
Create a communications project plan that manages all 
the moving parts

• Be succinct in your key messages 
– Use video and invest – no longer than 2 minutes 
– Use a combination of graphical styles 
• Create compelling copy 
– Utilize any keywords in your text 
– State your goal upfront 
– Use a specific hashtag for this campaign to measure 
results
Lesson #6 
• Create a tactical communications plan 
one week out 
– Have a few key supporters “pre-seed” your 
campaign 
– 3 days out – send our “teaser” emails and social 
media tweets and posts on what’s about to 
happen 
– 2 days out – use a combination of email, phone 
calls, social media tweets and blog posts 
– 1 day out – send last day emails
Lesson #7 
• Engage your ambassadors early 
– Provide them with social media tweets and 
posts ahead of time 
– Ask them to help spread the word
Lesson #8 
• Engage in incentives as rewards for 
donations 
– Match your incentives to the audience 
– Make sure you have the capacity to provide 
the incentives

• Be sure to thank all your supporters and 
share your results!
