the following is about the necessary skills required for effective communication. it is a personal experience of an individual who had a miscommunication event take place and is now reflecting based of the skills required for effective communication what they could have done better and where there was a communication breakdown.

• The scenario at hand is one of miscommunication where by the student
was affected negatively not only due to someone not doing their job but
more because wrong assumptions were made.
• The subject of the scenario is a student who takes contraceptive injection
who happened to misunderstand her gynecologist
• The communication breakdown was both the lady’s and the
administering nurse
3. MESSAGE AND SENDER
• The message of the scenario is that the receiver should
always make sure that they understand what is said to
them.
• The sender of the message was the doctor who
properly communicated instruction
4. PURPOSE
• The purpose of the scenario is to show the importance of
understanding what is being said.
• The purpose of the communication in this experience was to
inform (the nurse) to ensure the student is treated accordingly
and to keep out the chance of unnecessary costly mistakes.
ASSUMPTION AND CONTEXT
5. • The doctor made the assumption that verbalcommunication was not needed as the nurse
should alreadyknow how the system works.
• The nurse madethe assumption that due to the lack of communication from the doctor it was
not necessaryto ask questions for clarity.
• The student’s assumption was one based on the trust that had alreadybeen put in place

6. • The sender is a lady who is warning female 1st years who will be taking contraceptives to
always pay attention of the way things are done in order for them to avoid nurses
making mistakes.
• The receiver are first year females who might be considering starting taking
contraceptives.
SOLUTION
7. • The solution was teaching the first year about the
importance of paying attention to instructions and
asking wherever there are misunderstandings.
This prevents any mistakes that might arise.
IMPACT OF SCENARIO
8. • The scenario had a negative effect and although it was not
solved at hand in future all parties can use the solution of
minimizing assumption. Therefore, The doctor and nurse
should not only use verbal communication but also adhere to
written communication.
