2. Cooling system
• The cooling system is a system of parts and fluid that work together
to control an engine’s operating temperature for optimal
performance
3. Reasons for providing cooling system
• High temperatures reduce strength of piston & cylinder liner
• Preignition of charge
• Physical & chemical changes may occour in lubricating oil
• The even expansion of piston in the cylinder
4. Types of cooling system
• Air cooling system
• Liquid cooling system
Air cooling system
In this method,air is carried
away by the air flowing over
& around the engine cylinder
5. Avantages & disadvantages
Advantages:-
• Simpler design
• Absence of cooling
pipes,radiator,water jackets
• No danger coolant leakage
• Installation easier
Disadvantages:-
Non-uniform cooling
Maintenance is not easy
6. Liquid cooling system
• In this method of cooling system engines, the cylinder walls and
heads are provided with jackets through which the cooling liquid can
circulate.
• The heat is transferred from cylinder walls to the liquid by convection
and conduction
7. Types:-
• Thermo-syphon cooling
• Forced or pump cooling
• Cooling with thermostatic regulator
• Pressurised water cooling
• Evaporative cooling
12. Advantages :-
• Fuel consumption low
• Compact design of with appreciably smaller frontal area is possible
• Conveniently located wherever required
Disadvantages
• Water jacket is require
• Highly cost
• More maintenance
