The document outlines several initiatives to enhance vegetation cover, reduce biomass fuel consumption, promote timberless construction, and raise awareness about climate change in Darfur. It established community forests and distributed seedlings to 40 villages. Improved stoves were adopted by over 100,000 families, reducing fuel consumption by 40-60%. Workshops in several cities covered topics like climate change vulnerability and adaptation. Recommendations included strengthening coordination, focusing on women's roles, and building local capacity to collect weather data.

Sudan - examples of adaptation - practical action
1. Enhancing the vegetation cover
• Established 6 community forests of areas
ranged between 5-15 feddans
• about 40 villages received and grown seedlings
2. Reducing Biomass fuel consumption
• Conserving natural resources through the reduction of
consumption of biomass fuel and to reduce smoke
related hazards
• Saving of 40-60% of fuel. It is estimated that over
100,000 IDP families in greater Darfur have adopted
improved stoves through the multiplier effect of TOT.
• Promoted LPG as clean energy. Over 4500HH owned
appliances and 8000 in the process
3. Timber less construction
• 60% of Darfur houses were either whole or partially
burnt.
•The environment in the region has already been
exhausted by drought and desertification necessitate a
need for alternative shelter
4. Awareness raising
• Organised awareness raising
workshops in Khartoum, Kassala,
El Fashir and Damazin
• Topics covered around what is
CC, vulnerability, adaptation,
mitigation measures, NAPA,
conventions and best practices
• Inserted awareness on climate
change and adaptation in the
functional literacy curricula
5. Other activities
• Set target of reduction of our own carbon
emissions by 25% in 5 years. Target achieved
before target date
• Contributed to the earth hour campaigns.
• Developed and distributed printed material
“posters and handouts, etc”
• Developed a case Study on Practical Action’s
adaptation on water harvesting techniques in
North Darfur and Kassala States.
6. Recommendations of awareness workshops
1. Coordination with the UN agencies and NGOs on he efforts of climate
change .
2. The need for SStrengthening the relationship between the states and the
central government.
3. Further awareness on adaptation for communities is needed.
4. A focus on the role of women in coping with the climate.
5. Encouraging applied research on the issue
6. Enforcing the role of media
7. Strengthening laws related to the environment
7. Recommendations of awareness workshops
• Contribute to strengthening partners who are
involved in climate change adaptations (Capacity
building)
• With partners, activate the environment sanitation
systems, methodologies & approaches
• Build local communities capacities to contribute to
collection of local metrological data (e.g. rain gages)
• Undertake an audit of indigenous knowledge related
to climate change and weather forecasting
• Production of knowledge items (booklet, banners,
videos/objects & posters).
