2. KEY TERMS DEFINED
DISASTER
•The occurrence(s) that disrupt the normal functionality of a society/
community causing widespread human, properties or environment
losses which exceeds the ability of the affected community to cope
up with using its own resources.
•Disaster= Hazard + Vulnerability
HAZARD
•Extreme natural or human made event(s) that threatens to adversely
affect human life, property or activity to extent of causing a Disaster
RISK
• The probability of suffering damage (to life, property, economic
disruptions and environment) from a hazard for a given area and
reference period.
• Risk = [hazard x vulnerability]- [Capacity].
3. What is Disaster Risk Reduction
(DRR)?
‘Actions taken to reduce the risk of disasters and the adverse
impacts of natural hazards, through systematic efforts to
analyse and manage the causes of disasters, including
through avoidance of hazards, reduced social and economic
vulnerability to hazards, and improved preparedness for
adverse events.
