-Television use expanded in the 1950s
-With more televisions in homes, people spent
more time watching
-The major networks were ABC, CBS, and NBC
-It was important to almost everyone
-Now people could watch news events quicker
-They used television in political debates,
presidential elections, and racial settlements
-As TVs became more affordable and
appeared in more homes, that image shifted:
Instead of the host showing off his set to the
neighbors, we now saw happy families
gathered around the warm glow of the TV.
-As technology evolved, that content
(TV content) included live programming, on-
site breaking news and international
broadcasts

 Cold war : a war of words and diplomacy.
 Worlds most powerful countries.
 USSR kept eastern Europe in communism behind the
“Iron curtain.”
 Containment of communism led to war in Korea and
Vietnam.

War
 The Korean war began as a civil war between North and South
Korean, but the conflict soon become international.
 The long national history and unique cultural and linguistic
identity, urea suffered from frequent interferences.
 After the Japanese victory in the conflict, Japan consolidated its
growing influence on Korea in 1910.
 25,000 Americans killed during this war.
 In 1904-05 the Russian and Japanese war was also fought on the
Korean territory.
 During WW1, the Allies discussed the future of Korea in the
postwar period.
 Peace declared in July 1953, there was no winner during this.

 Business continued to move into the state for a long
period of time.
 Air condition began to be installed, making year
round work more comfortable.
 Lockheed became largest employer.
 In the years following the end of WW2, Atlanta
experienced a major growth.
 Their experience were pivotal in determining the
states future development and the war itself
marked Georgia's history.
 Because it occurred when important shifts in the
states, politics, race relation, and economy were
already underway the war accelerated Georgia's
moderation.

 The Atlanta Braves were the only team in
the city’s history to win a major
championship
 Falcons came straight after the braves
and then the hawks came shortly after in
1968
 Thes atlanta sports teams have brought
thousands of jobs to the state and
millions of dollars to the economy
 Atlanta was then considered a major
league city and with the help of the new
facilities helped to bring the 1996
Olympic games
 This also brought more money into the
economy due to all of the tourists
coming for the games

Ivan Allen
 Ivan Allen was born in 1911 and died in
1968.
 He was a major of Atlanta and led
racial integration efforts in the 1960’s at
a time when other southern cities were
erupting in violence.
 He came from a very rich family , when
he became older he didn’t want to be
spending his families money anymore.
 Allen was a businessman and served
two terms as a 52nd major of Atlanta.
 He married Louise Richardson and had
his only son Irene Bequmont Allen.
Migration
 Businesses moved to the South
 CDC, Lockheed, ect.
 In 1970 Georgia’s feorgion-
born population was
approximtley 33,000, or 0.7
percent of the state
population
 Latino growth was the biggest
growth from1970-2006

The three
governors
episode
The three Governors episode is when Eugene
Talmadge, Ellis Arnall and William Hartsfield all
thought they were they were the governors at
once.
After that happened Eugene won the country unit
vote so he became the unofficial governor.
Eugene’s advisors thought he was going to die
because of a sickness, then they wrote his son
secretly and Eugene dies late December.
There was a problem with the secret letter the son,
the new constitution had created a lieutenant
governor.
Talmadge forces wanted the Georgia general
assembly to elect Herman, others wanted
Thompson to win, which caused a fight to break
out in Atlanta
After the fighting happened the Georgia General
assembly elected Herman Talmadge as
governor.

Melvin Thompson: purchased Jekyll Island to build a state-owned resort ;
established UGA Veterinary School
Melvin E. Thompson1947-1948
Thompson worked in education, first as a teacher and coach, a principal, a district superintendent,
moving all the way up to assistant school superintendent for the state. Thompson was a supporter of
Governor Ellis Arnall and he was his executive secretary and state revenue commissioner.
Herman Talmadge: began education television; oversaw purchase of Stone
Mountain for park

September 1, 1936Russell (Richard B. Russel) defeats Talmadge during the Democratic primary in race for
U. S. Senate, 263,154 to 134,695 (county unit vote-378 to 143).
Lester Maddox: elected 1967; surprise winter; appointed more African
Americans to state office than any other governors combined; interrogated the
State Patrol; ”People’s Days”- any Georgian could visit and talk with the
governor

September 15, 1966-In one of the tightest races for governor in the history of the state, Ellis Arnell, Lester
Maddox, Jimmy Carter and James Grey all finish with more than 150,000 votes. Arnell and Maddox are
forced into a run-off
Carl Sanders: elected in 1962; worked to diffuse racial violence; increased
spending on education; used television ads to campaign

began rapid rail service in Atlanta of the United States
James Earl Carter: 1970- elected governor of Georgia;
1977-1980 served as President of the United States
-As president, negotiated peace between Israel and Egypt
-Problems as president; high energy costs, high interest
rates, high inflation, 52 American hostages held in Iran
-Georgia cites began to lose population to the suburbs
-Cities have worked to attract residents
March 27, 1970Georgia ratifies the 19th Amendment,
giving women the right to vote
April 3, 1970Jimmy Carter announces his candidacy for
governor. He will run against former governor Carl Sanders
and others
September 9, 1970Jimmy Carter forces a run-off in the
Democratic primary for governor, garnering more than
48% of the vote
September 23, 1970Carter wins run-off

Television Changes America -Television use expanded in the 1950s -With more televisions in homes, people spent more time watching -The major networks were ABC, CBS, and NBC -It was important to almost everyone -Now people could watch news events quicker -They used television in political debates, presidential elections, and racial settlements -As TVs became more affordable and appeared in more homes, that image shifted: Instead of the host showing off his set to the neighbors, we now saw happy families gathered around the warm glow of the TV. -As technology evolved, that content (TV content) included live programming, on- site breaking news and international broadcasts Here is a family joining to watch the local news on their new television Go Back To Link Page
  • 4. Cold War  Relations between the U.S. and SSR became tense.  Cold war : a war of words and diplomacy.  Worlds most powerful countries.  USSR kept eastern Europe in communism behind the “Iron curtain.”  Containment of communism led to war in Korea and Vietnam. Go Back To Link Page

Korean War  The Korean war began as a civil war between North and South Korean, but the conflict soon become international.  The long national history and unique cultural and linguistic identity, urea suffered from frequent interferences.  After the Japanese victory in the conflict, Japan consolidated its growing influence on Korea in 1910.  25,000 Americans killed during this war.  In 1904-05 the Russian and Japanese war was also fought on the Korean territory.  During WW1, the Allies discussed the future of Korea in the postwar period.  Peace declared in July 1953, there was no winner during this. Industries Move into Georgia  Business continued to move into the state for a long period of time.  Air condition began to be installed, making year round work more comfortable.  Lockheed became largest employer.  In the years following the end of WW2, Atlanta experienced a major growth.  Their experience were pivotal in determining the states future development and the war itself marked Georgia's history.  Because it occurred when important shifts in the states, politics, race relation, and economy were already underway the war accelerated Georgia's moderation. The Impact of Sports  The Atlanta Braves were the only team in the city’s history to win a major championship  Falcons came straight after the braves and then the hawks came shortly after in 1968  Thes atlanta sports teams have brought thousands of jobs to the state and millions of dollars to the economy  Atlanta was then considered a major league city and with the help of the new facilities helped to bring the 1996 Olympic games  This also brought more money into the economy due to all of the tourists coming for the games Go Back To Link Page

Development Of Atlanta Ivan Allen  Ivan Allen was born in 1911 and died in 1968.  He was a major of Atlanta and led racial integration efforts in the 1960’s at a time when other southern cities were erupting in violence.  He came from a very rich family , when he became older he didn’t want to be spending his families money anymore.  Allen was a businessman and served two terms as a 52nd major of Atlanta.  He married Louise Richardson and had his only son Irene Bequmont Allen. Migration  Businesses moved to the South  CDC, Lockheed, ect.  In 1970 Georgia’s feorgion- born population was approximtley 33,000, or 0.7 percent of the state population  Latino growth was the biggest growth from1970-2006 Go Back To Link Page

  • 11. The three governors episode The three Governors episode is when Eugene Talmadge, Ellis Arnall and William Hartsfield all thought they were they were the governors at once. After that happened Eugene won the country unit vote so he became the unofficial governor. Eugene’s advisors thought he was going to die because of a sickness, then they wrote his son secretly and Eugene dies late December. There was a problem with the secret letter the son, the new constitution had created a lieutenant governor. Talmadge forces wanted the Georgia general assembly to elect Herman, others wanted Thompson to win, which caused a fight to break out in Atlanta After the fighting happened the Georgia General assembly elected Herman Talmadge as governor.   • 12. Georgia Governors Melvin Thompson: purchased Jekyll Island to build a state-owned resort ; established UGA Veterinary School Melvin E. Thompson1947-1948 Thompson worked in education, first as a teacher and coach, a principal, a district superintendent, moving all the way up to assistant school superintendent for the state. Thompson was a supporter of Governor Ellis Arnall and he was his executive secretary and state revenue commissioner. Herman Talmadge: began education television; oversaw purchase of Stone Mountain for park Herman E. Talmadge1948-1955 September 1, 1936Russell (Richard B. Russel) defeats Talmadge during the Democratic primary in race for U. S. Senate, 263,154 to 134,695 (county unit vote-378 to 143). Lester Maddox: elected 1967; surprise winter; appointed more African Americans to state office than any other governors combined; interrogated the State Patrol; ”People’s Days”- any Georgian could visit and talk with the governor Lester G. Maddox1967-1971 September 15, 1966-In one of the tightest races for governor in the history of the state, Ellis Arnell, Lester Maddox, Jimmy Carter and James Grey all finish with more than 150,000 votes.
