3 Problem Solving Tools for Strategists, Business Model Innovators, and Strategists: THE PROBLEM SOLVING ENGINE (PSE) TOOLKIT

Published on

Strategists, Business Model Innovators, and Lean Startup Practitioners tend to use different and fragmented tools. Consequently, communication and cooperation are poor between Strategists, Business Model Innovators, and Lean Startup Practitioners especially in collaborative projects. This presentation features the Problem Solving Engine (PSE) Toolkit which is a visual framework that integrates tools used by Strategists, Business Model Innovators, and Lean Startup Practitioners. One advantage is greater communication as well as effective and efficient problem solving in innovation projects especially under conditions of great uncertainty.

  • Rod,

With your comprehensive response to my comment I wonder when this presentation shall expand into 30-40 slides?
I hope that many readers read thoroughly your response.

  • Ali: I'm trying to respond to you before the Brazil vs. Holland game starts (LOL). But, that's another story. Above, you ask why I'm using descriptions of 'space' under the Time Perspective of the Problem Solving Envelope. Actually, I'm using the concept of 'Space-Time' which I first encountered while reading about Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. Unlike in the older paradigm of Space-Time, space and time are currently considered to be interwoven and inseparable in a canvas or continuum. Nowadays, I'm focused on spreading and applying the notion of this Space-Time Canvas to business model innovation and development. Use of the Space-Time Canvas promises what Edward Wilson calls 'Consilience:' the unity of knowledge. With the concept of the Space-Time Canvas or Problem Solving Envelope (as I like to call it), I visualize space and time as being on opposite sides of the same canvas. In the above time perspective of the Problem Solving Envelope, I illustrate 4 spaces of time: PAST space, PRESENT space, FUTURE space, and CREATIVE LIFESPACE. Past, Present, and Future spaces refer to a system while the Creative Lifespace refers to the system's environment. I refrain from using 'Creative Space' because 'Creative Lifespace', which is based on Kurt Lewin's concept of Lifespace, is richer in meaning and fully reflects what I want to say. I like to explain the concept of Lifespace by talking about 'Lifecycle Space' which is a visual timeline that illustrates the lifecycle (past/present/future) of an object. However, unlike in a traditional timeline, the future of the Lifecycle Space extends to eternity or infinite time. In theory, the past of the Lifecycle Space extends to the 'Big Bang' or zero time. These concepts of the Lifecycle Space or 'Lifespace' are consistent with the goals and ideas of Consilience. I guess that you may be asking why I've added the word 'Creative' to Lifespace. I coined the term 'Creative Lifespace' to indicate the importance of Lifespace in facilitating creativity and innovation. Many books on creativity, creative problem solving, and innovation fail to talk about the Creative Lifespace. In my experience, however, the Creative Lifespace is a must in any discussion on creativity, creative problem solving, and innovation. Even as I comment on your question, I cannot help but observe our interaction in the Creative Lifespace which includes Slideshare and how such interactions enhance our skills of creativity, creative problem solving, and innovation. Really, I cannot do justice to the concept of the Creative Lifespace in this short write-up. So, should you have further comments and questions, just let me know. In the meantime, have a wonderful day. And enjoy the match between Brazil and Holland ... which is set to take place in a future space-time canvas.

  • Rod, you provide a very interesting concept. I wonder why you named under Time Perspective 'Creative Life Space' for two reasons. First, it is the Time Perspective and yet you used the word space here. Second, why didn't you call it Creative Space instead of Creative Life Space. I am sure you have a reason for using the word life.
In the Space-Time Dashboard you have the Environment Dimension. This is a very interesting approach as the environment has a varying topology.
A lot to think about, Rod
