on it. I will be forever grateful to you. You valuable information and opinion has helped me to come to conclusions.
Abstract
The research paper is based on the objective of finding the potential of Bangladesh films industry over the
upcoming years in terms of excellence. It focuses on finding the indicators, opinions and existing research that
helps to form solid evidence that Bangladesh film industry will do great in the upcoming years and what is its
present scenario. The subject of the research paper is “Is new generation film-makers and artists taking the
audience to a new golden era of the Bangladesh film industry?”.
After conducting my research I expected to find that people are very optimistic towards a successful progress if
Bangladeshi film industry in the upcoming years. I believe they will come up with positive responses about the
Bangladeshi movies and the hands behind it. I also expected to find the factors that are lagging the industry behind
other successful industries of the world. These facts will be helpful for the Bangladesh film industry to work on.
However, my research findings were very much in contrast to my findings. Bangladeshi audience seems to have a
pessimist opinion towards the future of the Bangladeshi film industry. And they believe we are nowhere in near of
reaching an excellent era of the industry.

Introduction
Cinema is like a window of a society. A country and its customs, society, people are mostly reflected through a
cinema. So we can also say it is a mouthpiece of a society. This is the strongest media which can portray the pros
and cones of a society. Mosharraf Md. Hossain (2015) believes, the presentconditionof the Bangladeshi filmindustryis
not as goodas comparedto othercountries’filmindustrylikeHollywood,Bollywood,Chinese,etc.
Not long ago people were annoyed by the idea of watching Bangladeshi films. Criticized for being melodramatic
and cliché this eventually had audience fade away. During the 2000s, most Bangladeshi films began doing poor
business. Viewership of Bangladeshi films in general dropped, and the industry was criticized for producing low-
quality films whose only appeal was that of cheap melodrama.
During this bad time of our cinema, some producers & directors came and tried to do some good films and they
were successful in their venture. But the problem was that, what they were making were not commercial film at all
rather they were making art film or I want to say telefilm. Not any more than that. They did not make the films by
considering the concept of commercial film at all. Moreover what they were making were not watched by all. Their
films were made only for the educated people who have the capability to find out the inner message of the film. So
in a sense they failed to help our cinema to survive. On the other hand Kolkata- cinemas has reached to its peak.
They are making world class film one after another. Story, technology, location, dance & music in every field they
are close to the standard of Bollywood. Now our actor and actress feel lucky if they are offered from Kolkata. And
if any of them get chance in Kolkata, they receive huge coverage in our national dailies.
Once upon a time it seemed to me that Bangla Cinema has taken its last breath. But fortunately with the effort of
some creative people it came out of ‘ICU’ alive. But very recent things are turning to positive again. Fortunately we
got some talents; creative producers and directors. They are trying their best to do something by considering the
demand of present audience. With the limit of budget they are using modern technology, modern story, nice location
etc. to attract almost all types for people to cinema halls. And it seemed to me they have become successful. Good
films, with the help of administration and conscious media, are throwing out bad things from Bangla cinema day by
day. People have started to come to cinema halls slowly. They are watching Bangladeshi cinemas again with friends
or colleagues. I believe good days of Bangladeshi cinemas are coming back soon. Mentality toward Bangladeshi
films is changing again to positive. We need some good producers and directors for commercial films which can
bring back the golden age of Bangladeshi cinemas.
The recent uproar in appearances of new and young film-makers and artists is shaping a new dimension in the
Bangladesh film industry. People are seen to being interested on the film-industry and its work now days. Youth are
keeping track of newly released Bengali films and are also seemed to stay hyped for upcoming movies made by new
young film makers. So the question is, are we on the verge of seeing a new golden era of the film industry of
Bangladesh?
Research Questions:
1. What are the views of Bangladeshi audience about the new trend of Bangladeshi films in the following
areas:
 How appealing and interesting are the scripts?
 How standard are the acting skills?
 How professional and good is the direction?
 How advanced is the technology?
2. How often does audience watch a Bengali film made by these new generation filmmakers?
3. What are the recommendations to the artists of Bangladesh film industry by the general audience?
Hypothesis:
The new film makers and artists have undoubtedly opened a new dimension in the film industry of
Bangladesh. I expect to find that if these new generation film makers have established a positive image about
Bangladeshi films in the mind of the audience. The purpose of my research is that to see whether this is the
opening of a new excellent era of the industry. My research will also identify the problems that still exist today
which is putting a barricade to prevent success of the industry. Finally I think people will come up with the idea
that they are actually considering to watch Bengali movies as much as they watch other international movies
in general. So from my research I think I will find that people actually think Bangladesh film industry is on the
verge of seeing a ne*w golden era.
Literature Review
We will not take any extreme position to explain the phenomena of Film industry of Bangladesh. “Assumptions that
fail to provide criteria for the analysis of messages, falling between the extremes of good and bad, beautiful and
ugly and art and non-art must prove singularly unfit as basic assumptions for the analysis of films that so clearly fall
between these extreme.” (So Worth 1971). The number of feature films now being made and released in the country
a year stand nowhere near the quantity witnessed in their glory days. Compared to the filmdom's activity at present,
that of the past seems mind-boggling. On average 60 to 70 films used to hit the big screen in the 1970s. In the
following four decades' headlong plunge in the number of new films, it eventually came down to less than a dozen a
year. Against this backdrop, the release of four full-length movies on the occasion of the coming Eid-ul-Fitr is great
news to many movie-goers. It is news, especially because Bangladeshi cinema in its heyday witnessed the release of
the same number of films on average on the occasion of Eid.
There was a time back in 1990’s when Bangladesh used to produce a lot of films but eventually started to drop
quality. This led to fall in audience numbers. Director’s attention shifted towards films music, dance and other
elements rather than good scripts, contents and direction. More focus was given on intense actions scenes.
Bollywood style movies are present in the contemporary Bangladeshi ‘mediascape’, to borrow the term from
Appadurai(1994).To add, directors started copying foreign films; Indian films to be precise. This drifted major
audience leaving a small income group people as remaining audience.
During 2000’s Bangladeshi films were almost labeled as joke among audience. The film Business fell along with
the number of films released every year. According to Sharif AhmadShabbir(2016) the Banglacinemabecame leftoutby
majorityof the audiencesbecause theyaccusedthese“so-called”Banglacinemasas trashand promotinganalienculture
that isnot Banglaculture Onlya small number of people watched it on television but didn’t prefer to go to the cinema
halls. However there were some movie makers who always attempted innovation and creativity in the movies. But
even this failed to attract large pool of audience.
Then in 2009 there was a change of scenario as some movies started to do well in the industry. Government
alongside large film production companies came forward for the betterment. Large production companies like Jazz
Multimedia and Tiger media cam into the scene . Films produced by these companies started doing better for their
large budgets, glamour, better distribution and appeal. But still these didn’t succeed fully to attract the educated
people living in rural and urban areas.
With the queues of viewers getting longer to watch local cinema productions, the country's movie world is almost
set to experience a revival. After a long gap, local new movies and a fresh batch of popular artistes have begun
occupying a considerable space in public gossip. Digitally equipped state-of-the-art theatres are coming up in the
large cities. Capital Dhaka now boasts of three multiplexes having all the modern amenities and gadgets for
watching movies, as well as renovated cinemas. As a number of the local movie-world watchers have found out, a
revival is awaiting the Bangladeshi movies. Others have identified the signs of the emergence of an educated and
culturally refined generation of movie producers, directors and artistes. It is being interpreted as a complete break
with the past traditions that once defined the local movie industry.
That the depressing scenario of the country's cinema would find itself undergoing an all-round transformation soon
was beyond the thoughts of the spectators and movie people. Not only that, they also embarked on ventures to make
films having a distinctive Bangladeshi character. But initially, not many directors were found interested in making
movies of this genre. Of late, the number has begun swelling. Big houses are coming up with mega budgets.
Many cultural watchers credit the fresh start of Bangladeshi cinema with two phenomena. One comprised new-
generation filmmakers and actors committed to making movies based on purely Bangladeshi realities. They include
movie people belonging to the offbeat trends. The 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War recurs as a theme in many of
these films. The others, producers and directors belonging to the mainstream group, had the Indian model in their
subconscious. They were more prone to making Bangladesh-India joint venture films than making Bangladeshi
films with local cast and crew. Finally, they prevailed. Commerce eventually emerged as their chief target.
However, these film productions were professional in character. The new-generation mainstream cinema has thus
outshone the long-predominant sentimentalized social entertainers.
To the older audiences used to watching middle-class family dramas, the new movies came as a shock. Yet, in spite
of the incredulity of many, these new films gave the industry a new lease of life. In terms of business, the new
movies proved once again the film industry's major role in the growth of commercial entertainment in the country.
Many long-shut cinemas opened. Distribution companies resumed their activities.
The rapid transformation of Bangladeshi cinema into a fast re-emerging industry is indeed amazing. Just a decade
ago, the Dhaka cinema world was dismissed as one long extinct. Remnants of Bangladeshi films would be found in
the amateur short films and later in the full-length works directed by the country's 'new wave' young makers. All of
them emerged from the film society movement, which had remained active in the country parallel to mainstream
cinema since the 1960s. Many critics would like to believe, had there been no Masiuddin Shaker-Sheikh Neamat
Ali, the younger Tanvir Mokammel, Morshedul Islam or Tareq Masud, a rebirth would have eluded the nation for
an indefinite period.
The largest bulk of credit for keeping cinema alive as an art in the land for over two decades, until his death in 1989,
goes, however, to Alamgir Kabir. It was he and some of his contemporary movie-lovers who pioneered the film
society movement in the country and, thus, the culture of watching better cinema. Alongside their theoretical battle
for promoting works using 'film language', Zahir Raihan, Sadeq Khan et al engaged themselves in a practical fight --
- directing pure films. In some way, it was Zahir Raihan whose lone endeavours to make better cinema had helped
the trend of making healthy films to be alive in the country. In a subtle way, the later-day directors like Mostofa
Sarwar Farooki, Amitabh Reza Chowdhury ('Aynabaji'), and Shameem Akhtar ('Rina Brown') et al owe a lot to
Zahir Raihan. However, the parallel cinema movement has all along been alive in the country's movie world.
Periodic film festivals have also played a vital role in keeping the spirit of better cinema alive.
The second development, however, is filled with many positive signs. It holds great prospects for a renewed
emergence of the local cinema industry commercially. Thanks to new movie-making techniques, adoption of digital
modes of film distribution and exhibition --- and the emergence of talented artistes and directors, the joint venture
films stand little chance of failure.
During the last decade, the history of the Bangladesh Film Industry (BFI) has been mainly focused to present a
record or narrative descriptions of the past events rather revealing the socio-economic and technical problems that
the industry has faced. A crucial issue is that the technical history has not been addressed by the scholars as it
should be. Technical issues such as filmmaking, distribution and exhibition that have hindered the growth of the
industry must be explored to understand the dynamics of the film industry. This study has confirmed that the local
film industry could not grow not only for lack of entrepreneurs or skilled manpower but also for the intentional
uncooperative discouragement from the British colonial and Pakistani governments. It seems clear that the since the
birth of the industry, the political impels could not be avoided. The BFI should utilize its own history and try to
learn from their previous mistakes of not being tactical enough to handle the political constraints present across
several eras of the film industry’s past. Information from this research are based on direct insights gained from
several visits to the industry and from related books and other knowledge sources related to the Bangladesh Film
Industry. We report that in order to achieve the challenges of transforming the total industry from analogue to the
digital phase, the development of production, distribution and exhibition systems, infrastructure and manpower
training is really required. Without the active support of the political power, this transformation is not possible, thus
inhibiting the growth of the digital industry in Bangladesh.
Primary Research
My primary research consisted of survey of a representative sampling, and interviews with those people.
Initially, a survey was created online for the general public with the age range of 16-50. Conversations with students
from North South University took place with the goal of having a productive discussion about the current situation
of the film industry of Bangladesh. They were multiple choice questions and opinion polls.. The survey was carried
out on 55 random people on the 30h of December, 2017 between 9.30 PM to 2nd of December, 2017. All of the
questionnaires were filled up completely and submitted

Research Findings
The very first question that I asked my respondents is how often they watch Bangladeshi movies. This was probably
the most important question that I had to ask on which my entire report depends. The results were interesting but not
surprising.

50% of the survey population responded they watch Bangladeshi movies very less. Next 21% said they don’t watch
Bangladeshi movies at all. This means about 71% of people are negligent of Bangladeshi movies.
However, 23% respondent said they sometimes to watch Bangladeshi movies. Which is low compared to negligent
71% of the population. Finally, there was only 5% of the population who said they often watched Bangladeshi
movies. Sadly, this 5 % falls on the most minor proportion of the results.
Therefore, it can be said that Bangladeshi people don’t like watching Bangladeshi movies much according to the
results.
2) I liked the old (90's) Bangladesh movies because
As my purpose of the research of was to see if Bangladesh was going to a new golden era of the industry of
Bangladesh; I tried to look into what made the old Bangladeshi movies a part of the golden era of movie of movie
industry.
According to my research people said, majority (63%) of people said they believe better scripts were made into
movies. This means films back then were fueled by good stories, plots and screen-writers. The story of the movie
captured audience attention. Rest 37% of the respondents believed good acting was responsible for better movies
back then. They believed there were good actors/ actresses who brought audience by their acting skills.
From the results i can say better scripts are the key player in shaping a golden era of film industry of Bangladesh. In
comparison to acting, better scripts should be adapted in the recent movies of Bangladesh.

I tried to see if ticket prices affect the audience numbers of Bangladeshi movies. To add, if price of tickets stops or
discourages people from going to cinema halls to watch Bangladeshi movies.
The results were not shocking. Majority percentage (53%) of respondents said ticket price weren’t high. However
39% of population said sometimes the ticket price were high.
But this doesn’t directly indicate anything directly. It just gives a hint that ticket price might not be the reason that is
stopping people from going to movies. As a result, we can say that even though ticket prices are lower people still
don’t go to the movies. Precisely, ticket prices aren’t stopping people from going to movies.
4. We have world class actors working in the film industry…
A movie industry is sometimes said to be as good as its artists in it. Nowadays the most key element of a movie is
its lead actors and supporting roles. People often decide to see a movie if there are prominent actors present on the
movie. A lot of people prefer big stars in it again some people prefer some important supporting characters to play
specific roles. However, acting is the main issue here. I tried to find if people believes if we have world class actors
in the industry. By world class i mean someone capable of winning international awards for their acting skills.
The results were astonishing. A majority percentage of people (63%) believe we don’t have any world class actors
working in the industry. A very less percentile of 23% said that we do have some world class actors working in the
industry. Then again 6% said we do have world class actors in the industry. However this result is largely in
contrast to the majority opinion.
Keeping other facts apart, from the results it can be said that our industry still lacks world class artists acting at the
industry. And without such actors we are nowhere in near reaching an excellent era.

. We have a chance of reaching the standard of Hollywood within

Currently the Hollywood industry is considered to be the most standard and leading film industry of the world. To
be precise Hollywood is considered to be the benchmark of the quality. So as my research is towards finding if
Bangladeshi film industry is on the verge of seeing a new golden era, I need to see if it has the potential of reaching
Hollywood standard.
So I asked my survey population if they think Bangladesh will reach Hollywood standard on next ten years.
Majority of the population (51%) believes with the existing resources its not possible for us to reach the quality of
Hollywood. 37% expressed neutral opinion. However, 12% agreed that Bangladesh do have the capability of
reaching the Hollywood standard.

6. Why I don't watch Bangladeshi Movies?
A very crucial question is why do people don’t like to watch Bangladeshi movies? The results might lead to us
having an clue what factors are stopping Bangladesh from reaching a golden era of film industry. So I ranked them
according to importance level.
What I found out is that ‘Poor Scripts’ were the most important reason for not being liked by audience. Secondly,
poor acting fuels dislikes by the audience. Then comes the reason for not being modern. And the remaining
audience believes there are some other reasons for not liking Bangladeshi movies.

I asked my respondents how much they think the technology used is good. I used a rating scale to rank it from poor
to excellent. Majority said the technology is poor. The objective was to see if Bangladeshi movies were lacking
behind in technological advancement in movies. And the answer what I got was mostly ‘Yes’.
The reason I asked this question is because technology nowadays is a crucial part of movies. All around the globe,
all film industries are adapting modern technology as a support tool for success. Whereas Bangladeshi film industry
doesn’t seem to follow this trend much. Even though some producers are following this trend but still there is not
enough input of technology. Technology varies from cameras to editing and each aspect of it is necessary to
improvise film making. Even though Bangladeshi film makers are using expensive cameras more needs to be done
on the editing part of the movies for example, animation and graphics.

Summary of the finding.
I tried to question people on topics that are the indicators of an excellent film industry with great potential. My
questionnaire was designed to filter out facts that indicates if Bangladesh is about to see good days soon. The results
were against the hopes. Like firstly I asked people if they watch Bangladeshi movies, and most results came out
negative. So this means Bangladesh film industry is still in a point where the audience doesn’t even prefer watching
it. This clearly indicates a industry with no good days coming soon. I also asked them if there was potentiality of
being a standard film industry within the next few years. Even this came out to be negative responses. Bangladeshi
people don’t believe so. Still people of Bangladesh believe there is a long way to go to become world-class industry
like Hollywood. Furthermore I tried to set the old 90’s movie as the benchmark of quality-movies of Bangladesh. I
asked the audience how good were the movies compared to these old movies of the industry. The respondents
believed contemporary Bangladeshi movies were nowhere near those movies. The old movies had excellent scripts
and those made the movies more interesting. It didn’t matter who the actors were or how good the film budget were.
The stories were compelling enough to make it likable.
I have also put emphasize on the technical aspect of the films. For example, I wanted to see if Bangladesh film
industry was progressing in terms of technology. A good film industry not only keeps improvising its stories and
scripts but also its technological resources. Suppose modern drone-cameras, infrared cameras gives better shots of
scene and makes it more dramatic. But people responded no such technology is used on most of the films and hence
making it more back-dated. Finally I also wanted to see if ticket prices were a crucial factor determining the
audience level of a film industry. Then again, people said the average ticket prices of Bangladeshi films were
considerable and not high. Hence this was not a major factor that stops people from going to the cinemas.
My research findings didn’t completely go along with my hypothesis. To recall, my central hypothesis was that I
will find people believing -Bangladesh film industry to be on the verge of seeing a new golden era very soon.
However this wasn’t the fact. Instead respondents of my survey seemed to be dislike Bangladeshi movies and the
industry. They brought out several points which don’t match my hypothesis. This was a shock for me both as a
researcher and a fan of this topic. But I did manage to find valuable findings which I was expecting to know through
conducting this research.
Recommendations
1. Most of the time Bangla cinemas have extremely dramatic story.
2. Cinema’s story and theme should be more realistic.
3. Most of the Bangla cinemas reflect vulgar and artificial emotion.
4. Bangla cinemas’ titles are very weird.
5. Total presentation is very weak.
6. Camera’s focus and angle is very vulgar and perverse.
7. Hindi cinema’s music, choreography, story is far better than that of Bangla cinema, that’s why they watch Hindi
cinema.
8. Most of the Bangla cinemas’ story and title is copied from Hindi cinema.
9. Other foreign cinemas are not responsible for the poor quality of Bangla cinema. It itself is responsible.
10. Bangla cinema is far from our rich culture.
11. Our actors/actresses’ acting and dress sense does not reflect our culture.
12. Bangla cinema does not show our real problem-that is economic problem or moral degradation, corruption etc.
13. In the love stories, usually it is shown that an upper class girl and a lower class boy fall in love and they
overcome the class conflict-which is absurd and usually does not happen in reality.
14. Cinema’s dialogue should be more sober and realistic.
15. Educated directors and producers are badly needed in Bangladesh.
16. Environment of most of the cinema halls is very dirty, unhealthy.
17. Middle and upper class women usually do not feel comfortable in most of the cinema halls. Only there are very
few good cinema halls where women can feel comfortable.
18. We should have such kind of cinema which will deal with other ignored factors of Bangladesh.
19. Directors and producers should change their target group of audiences. If they make cinema for educated and
cultured audiences, then, of course, they will go to cinema halls regularly.
20. We need stronger sensor board which will be strict enough to sensor a cinema.
21. We need better technicians and international-standard equipment.
Conclusion
Bangladeshi cinema can also achieve world class quality. We have a lot of creative hands which can be used to fuel
a revolution in cinema industry. Every sector of a cinema should be improved by which our young generation will
be encouraged to watch Bangla cinema. Clean, morally sound, social cinemas are liked by all. Not only educated
viewers but also illiterate viewers like clean films. No one likes vulgar posters, illogical titles. Ultimately majority
viewers are aware of vulgar scenes in the films. Whether he or she is educated or not but most of them agree at one
point, that if better films are produced, more audiences will come to cinema halls. Environment of cinema hall is
very important. Most of the people from lower class agree that they don’t feel comfortable to bring their wives in
cinema hall. If we want to bring back our young generation to appreciate our own culture then we have to struggle
against the existing dirt of this industry.
Now the qualities of Bengali cinemas are better that those released in previous years, but these are still not at par
with Hollywood or Bollywood movies. Bangladesh is trying to make good movies but there are areas in film-
making where improvements are necessary. Yes, I am hopeful about a positive change in our local film industry as
young minds and story-tellers are coming now. They are trying to tell new stories through fresh narratives and new
interpretations of lives and societies… Some highly professional corporate bodies like Jazz Multi Media, ATN
Entertainment, Impress TeleFilm, Runner Group, Asiatic – are investing to produce films while young audiences are
enthused to watch these films.

Bangladesh film industry (1)

  • 1. “Are new generation film-makers and artists taking the audience to a new golden-era of the Bangladesh film industry?” ENG 105.44 Submitted To Ms. Sakiba Ferdousy, (SeniorLecturerof NorthSouthUniversity) Submitted By Rizwan Jahangir Chowdhury Student ID 1520833031 21st, December, 2017 Acknowledgements The research paper has been developed out of a series of lectures and research done at North South University, Bangladesh and I am grateful to my course mates for always providing me feedbacks on my topic. First I would like to thank my Course Instructor Ms. Sakiba Ferdousy for teaching me how to conduct research and publish a research paper. I am grateful to her for accepting my research proposal. She has been constantly guiding
  • 2. me from the very beginning to the last of this research. Starting from the topic to the findings; her contributions cannot be quantified. To my mentors, you give me hope and your success is all that I pray for. You advised on the things I needed to do and how to do. You also provided me with resources that was helpful for me to carry out this report. Finally to all the people who responded to the questionnaire I thank you for the precious time you have spent on it. I will be forever grateful to you. You valuable information and opinion has helped me to come to conclusions. Abstract The research paper is based on the objective of finding the potential of Bangladesh films industry over the upcoming years in terms of excellence. It focuses on finding the indicators, opinions and existing research that helps to form solid evidence that Bangladesh film industry will do great in the upcoming years and what is its present scenario. The subject of the research paper is “Is new generation film-makers and artists taking the audience to a new golden era of the Bangladesh film industry?”. After conducting my research I expected to find that people are very optimistic towards a successful progress if Bangladeshi film industry in the upcoming years. I believe they will come up with positive responses about the Bangladeshi movies and the hands behind it. I also expected to find the factors that are lagging the industry behind other successful industries of the world. These facts will be helpful for the Bangladesh film industry to work on.
  • 3. However, my research findings were very much in contrast to my findings. Bangladeshi audience seems to have a pessimist opinion towards the future of the Bangladeshi film industry. And they believe we are nowhere in near of reaching an excellent era of the industry. * Table of Contents PAGE ABSTRACT........................................................................................................................................... • 4. Introduction Cinema is like a window of a society. A country and its customs, society, people are mostly reflected through a cinema. So we can also say it is a mouthpiece of a society. This is the strongest media which can portray the pros and cones of a society. Mosharraf Md. Hossain (2015) believes, the presentconditionof the Bangladeshi filmindustryis not as goodas comparedto othercountries’filmindustrylikeHollywood,Bollywood,Chinese, etc. Not long ago people were annoyed by the idea of watching Bangladeshi films. Criticized for being melodramatic and cliché this eventually had audience fade away. During the 2000s, most Bangladeshi films began doing poor business. Viewership of Bangladeshi films in general dropped, and the industry was criticized for producing low- quality films whose only appeal was that of cheap melodrama. During this bad time of our cinema, some producers & directors came and tried to do some good films and they were successful in their venture. But the problem was that, what they were making were not commercial film at all rather they were making art film or I want to say telefilm. Not any more than that. They did not make the films by considering the concept of commercial film at all. Moreover what they were making were not watched by all. Their films were made only for the educated people who have the capability to find out the inner message of the film. So in a sense they failed to help our cinema to survive. On the other hand Kolkata- cinemas has reached to its peak. They are making world class film one after another. Story, technology, location, dance & music in every field they are close to the standard of Bollywood. Now our actor and actress feel lucky if they are offered from Kolkata. And if any of them get chance in Kolkata, they receive huge coverage in our national dailies. Once upon a time it seemed to me that Bangla Cinema has taken its last breath. But fortunately with the effort of some creative people it came out of ‘ICU’ alive. But very recent things are turning to positive again. Fortunately we got some talents; creative producers and directors. They are trying their best to do something by considering the demand of present audience. With the limit of budget they are using modern technology, modern story, nice location etc. to attract almost all types for people to cinema halls. And it seemed to me they have become successful. Good films, with the help of administration and conscious media, are throwing out bad things from Bangla cinema day by day. People have started to come to cinema halls slowly. They are watching Bangladeshi cinemas again with friends
  • 5. or colleagues. I believe good days of Bangladeshi cinemas are coming back soon. Mentality toward Bangladeshi films is changing again to positive. We need some good producers and directors for commercial films which can bring back the golden age of Bangladeshi cinemas. The recent uproar in appearances of new and young film-makers and artists is shaping a new dimension in the Bangladesh film industry. People are seen to being interested on the film-industry and its work now days. Youth are keeping track of newly released Bengali films and are also seemed to stay hyped for upcoming movies made by new young film makers. So the question is, are we on the verge of seeing a new golden era of the film industry of Bangladesh? Research Questions: 1. What are the views of Bangladeshi audience about the new trend of Bangladeshi films in the following areas:  How appealing and interesting are the scripts?  How standard are the acting skills?
  • 6.  How professional and good is the direction?  How advanced is the technology? 2. How often does audience watch a Bengali film made by these new generation filmmakers? 3. What are the recommendations to the artists of Bangladesh film industry by the general audience? Hypothesis: The new film makers and artists have undoubtedly opened a new dimension in the film industry of Bangladesh. I expect to find that if these new generation film makers have established a positive image about Bangladeshi films in the mind of the audience. The purpose of my research is that to see whether this is the opening of a new excellent era of the industry. My research will also identify the problems that still exist today which is putting a barricade to prevent success of the industry. Finally I think people will come up with the idea that they are actually considering to watch Bengali movies as much as they watch other international movies in general. So from my research I think I will find that people actually think Bangladesh film industry is on the verge of seeing a ne*w golden era. Literature Review We will not take any extreme position to explain the phenomena of Film industry of Bangladesh. “Assumptions that fail to provide criteria for the analysis of messages, falling between the extremes of good and bad, beautiful and ugly and art and non-art must prove singularly unfit as basic assumptions for the analysis of films that so clearly fall between these extreme.” (So Worth 1971). The number of feature films now being made and released in the country a year stand nowhere near the quantity witnessed in their glory days. Compared to the filmdom's activity at present, that of the past seems mind-boggling. On average 60 to 70 films used to hit the big screen in the 1970s. In the following four decades' headlong plunge in the number of new films, it eventually came down to less than a dozen a year. Against this backdrop, the release of four full-length movies on the occasion of the coming Eid-ul-Fitr is great news to many movie-goers. It is news, especially because Bangladeshi cinema in its heyday witnessed the release of the same number of films on average on the occasion of Eid.
  • 7. There was a time back in 1990’s when Bangladesh used to produce a lot of films but eventually started to drop quality. This led to fall in audience numbers. Director’s attention shifted towards films music, dance and other elements rather than good scripts, contents and direction. More focus was given on intense actions scenes. Bollywood style movies are present in the contemporary Bangladeshi ‘mediascape’, to borrow the term from Appadurai(1994).To add, directors started copying foreign films; Indian films to be precise. This drifted major audience leaving a small income group people as remaining audience. During 2000’s Bangladeshi films were almost labeled as joke among audience. The film Business fell along with the number of films released every year. According to Sharif AhmadShabbir(2016) the Banglacinemabecame leftoutby majorityof the audiencesbecause theyaccusedthese“so-called”Banglacinemasas trashand promotinganalienculture that isnot Banglaculture Onlya small number of people watched it on television but didn’t prefer to go to the cinema halls. However there were some movie makers who always attempted innovation and creativity in the movies. But even this failed to attract large pool of audience. Then in 2009 there was a change of scenario as some movies started to do well in the industry. Government alongside large film production companies came forward for the betterment. Large production companies like Jazz Multimedia and Tiger media cam into the scene . Films produced by these companies started doing better for their large budgets, glamour, better distribution and appeal. But still these didn’t succeed fully to attract the educated people living in rural and urban areas. With the queues of viewers getting longer to watch local cinema productions, the country's movie world is almost set to experience a revival. After a long gap, local new movies and a fresh batch of popular artistes have begun occupying a considerable space in public gossip. Digitally equipped state-of-the-art theatres are coming up in the large cities. Capital Dhaka now boasts of three multiplexes having all the modern amenities and gadgets for watching movies, as well as renovated cinemas. As a number of the local movie-world watchers have found out, a revival is awaiting the Bangladeshi movies. Others have identified the signs of the emergence of an educated and culturally refined generation of movie producers, directors and artistes. It is being interpreted as a complete break with the past traditions that once defined the local movie industry. That the depressing scenario of the country's cinema would find itself undergoing an all-round transformation soon was beyond the thoughts of the spectators and movie people. Not only that, they also embarked on ventures to make films having a distinctive Bangladeshi character. But initially, not many directors were found interested in making movies of this genre. Of late, the number has begun swelling. Big houses are coming up with mega budgets. Many cultural watchers credit the fresh start of Bangladeshi cinema with two phenomena. One comprised new- generation filmmakers and actors committed to making movies based on purely Bangladeshi realities. They include movie people belonging to the offbeat trends. The 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War recurs as a theme in many of these films. The others, producers and directors belonging to the mainstream group, had the Indian model in their subconscious. They were more prone to making Bangladesh-India joint venture films than making Bangladeshi films with local cast and crew. Finally, they prevailed. Commerce eventually emerged as their chief target.
  • 8. However, these film productions were professional in character. The new-generation mainstream cinema has thus outshone the long-predominant sentimentalized social entertainers. To the older audiences used to watching middle-class family dramas, the new movies came as a shock. Yet, in spite of the incredulity of many, these new films gave the industry a new lease of life. In terms of business, the new movies proved once again the film industry's major role in the growth of commercial entertainment in the country. Many long-shut cinemas opened. Distribution companies resumed their activities. The rapid transformation of Bangladeshi cinema into a fast re-emerging industry is indeed amazing. Just a decade ago, the Dhaka cinema world was dismissed as one long extinct. Remnants of Bangladeshi films would be found in the amateur short films and later in the full-length works directed by the country's 'new wave' young makers. All of them emerged from the film society movement, which had remained active in the country parallel to mainstream cinema since the 1960s. Many critics would like to believe, had there been no Masiuddin Shaker-Sheikh Neamat Ali, the younger Tanvir Mokammel, Morshedul Islam or Tareq Masud, a rebirth would have eluded the nation for an indefinite period. The largest bulk of credit for keeping cinema alive as an art in the land for over two decades, until his death in 1989, goes, however, to Alamgir Kabir. It was he and some of his contemporary movie-lovers who pioneered the film society movement in the country and, thus, the culture of watching better cinema. Alongside their theoretical battle for promoting works using 'film language', Zahir Raihan, Sadeq Khan et al engaged themselves in a practical fight -- - directing pure films. In some way, it was Zahir Raihan whose lone endeavours to make better cinema had helped the trend of making healthy films to be alive in the country. In a subtle way, the later-day directors like Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Amitabh Reza Chowdhury ('Aynabaji'), and Shameem Akhtar ('Rina Brown') et al owe a lot to Zahir Raihan. However, the parallel cinema movement has all along been alive in the country's movie world. Periodic film festivals have also played a vital role in keeping the spirit of better cinema alive. The second development, however, is filled with many positive signs. It holds great prospects for a renewed emergence of the local cinema industry commercially. Thanks to new movie-making techniques, adoption of digital modes of film distribution and exhibition --- and the emergence of talented artistes and directors, the joint venture films stand little chance of failure. During the last decade, the history of the Bangladesh Film Industry (BFI) has been mainly focused to present a record or narrative descriptions of the past events rather revealing the socio-economic and technical problems that the industry has faced. A crucial issue is that the technical history has not been addressed by the scholars as it should be. Technical issues such as filmmaking, distribution and exhibition that have hindered the growth of the industry must be explored to understand the dynamics of the film industry. This study has confirmed that the local film industry could not grow not only for lack of entrepreneurs or skilled manpower but also for the intentional uncooperative discouragement from the British colonial and Pakistani governments. It seems clear that the since the birth of the industry, the political impels could not be avoided. The BFI should utilize its own history and try to
  • 9. learn from their previous mistakes of not being tactical enough to handle the political constraints present across several eras of the film industry’s past. Information from this research are based on direct insights gained from several visits to the industry and from related books and other knowledge sources related to the Bangladesh Film Industry. We report that in order to achieve the challenges of transforming the total industry from analogue to the digital phase, the development of production, distribution and exhibition systems, infrastructure and manpower training is really required. Without the active support of the political power, this transformation is not possible, thus inhibiting the growth of the digital industry in Bangladesh. Primary Research My primary research consisted of survey of a representative sampling, and interviews with those people. Initially, a survey was created online for the general public with the age range of 16-50. Conversations with students from North South University took place with the goal of having a productive discussion about the current situation of the film industry of Bangladesh. They were multiple choice questions and opinion polls.. The survey was carried out on 55 random people on the 30h of December, 2017 between 9.30 PM to 2nd of December, 2017. All of the questionnaires were filled up completely and submitted Secondary Research: My researchwill be supportedbyexistingresearchmaterialsonrelevantissue.Mysecondaryresearchsource will be internet articles and blogs.
  • 10. *The questionnaires were filled up completely online* Research Findings The very first question that I asked my respondents is how often they watch Bangladeshi movies. This was probably the most important question that I had to ask on which my entire report depends. The results were interesting but not surprising. • 11. 50% of the survey population responded they watch Bangladeshi movies very less. Next 21% said they don’t watch Bangladeshi movies at all. This means about 71% of people are negligent of Bangladeshi movies. However, 23% respondent said they sometimes to watch Bangladeshi movies. Which is low compared to negligent 71% of the population. Finally, there was only 5% of the population who said they often watched Bangladeshi movies. Sadly, this 5 % falls on the most minor proportion of the results. Therefore, it can be said that Bangladeshi people don’t like watching Bangladeshi movies much according to the results. 2) I liked the old (90's) Bangladesh movies because As my purpose of the research of was to see if Bangladesh was going to a new golden era of the industry of Bangladesh; I tried to look into what made the old Bangladeshi movies a part of the golden era of movie of movie industry. According to my research people said, majority (63%) of people said they believe better scripts were made into movies. This means films back then were fueled by good stories, plots and screen-writers. The story of the movie captured audience attention. Rest 37% of the respondents believed good acting was responsible for better movies back then. They believed there were good actors/ actresses who brought audience by their acting skills. From the results i can say better scripts are the key player in shaping a golden era of film industry of Bangladesh. In comparison to acting, better scripts should be adapted in the recent movies of Bangladesh. 63% 37% Opnion Better Scripts Better Acting
  • 12. I tried to see if ticket prices affect the audience numbers of Bangladeshi movies. To add, if price of tickets stops or discourages people from going to cinema halls to watch Bangladeshi movies. The results were not shocking. Majority percentage (53%) of respondents said ticket price weren’t high. However 39% of population said sometimes the ticket price were high. But this doesn’t directly indicate anything directly. It just gives a hint that ticket price might not be the reason that is stopping people from going to movies. As a result, we can say that even though ticket prices are lower people still don’t go to the movies. Precisely, ticket prices aren’t stopping people from going to movies. 4. We have world class actors working in the film industry…
  • 13. A movie industry is sometimes said to be as good as its artists in it. Nowadays the most key element of a movie is its lead actors and supporting roles. People often decide to see a movie if there are prominent actors present on the movie. A lot of people prefer big stars in it again some people prefer some important supporting characters to play specific roles. However, acting is the main issue here. I tried to find if people believes if we have world class actors in the industry. By world class i mean someone capable of winning international awards for their acting skills. The results were astonishing. A majority percentage of people (63%) believe we don’t have any world class actors working in the industry. A very less percentile of 23% said that we do have some world class actors working in the industry. Then again 6% said we do have world class actors in the industry. However this result is largely in contrast to the majority opinion. Keeping other facts apart, from the results it can be said that our industry still lacks world class artists acting at the industry. And without such actors we are nowhere in near reaching an excellent era. Many 6% Few 63% Moderate 23% Not at all 8% Opinion . We have a chance of reaching the standard of Hollywood within 0 years:
  • 14. Currently the Hollywood industry is considered to be the most standard and leading film industry of the world. To be precise Hollywood is considered to be the benchmark of the quality. So as my research is towards finding if Bangladeshi film industry is on the verge of seeing a new golden era, I need to see if it has the potential of reaching Hollywood standard. So I asked my survey population if they think Bangladesh will reach Hollywood standard on next ten years. Majority of the population (51%) believes with the existing resources its not possible for us to reach the quality of Hollywood. 37% expressed neutral opinion. However, 12% agreed that Bangladesh do have the capability of reaching the Hollywood standard. 12% 51% 37% Opinion Agree Disagree Neutral 6. Why I don't watch Bangladeshi Movies?
  • 15. A very crucial question is why do people don’t like to watch Bangladeshi movies? The results might lead to us having an clue what factors are stopping Bangladesh from reaching a golden era of film industry. So I ranked them according to importance level. What I found out is that ‘Poor Scripts’ were the most important reason for not being liked by audience. Secondly, poor acting fuels dislikes by the audience. Then comes the reason for not being modern. And the remaining audience believes there are some other reasons for not liking Bangladeshi movies. • 16. ‘’ I asked my respondents how much they think the technology used is good. I used a rating scale to rank it from poor to excellent. Majority said the technology is poor. The objective was to see if Bangladeshi movies were lacking behind in technological advancement in movies. And the answer what I got was mostly ‘Yes’. The reason I asked this question is because technology nowadays is a crucial part of movies. All around the globe, all film industries are adapting modern technology as a support tool for success. Whereas Bangladeshi film industry doesn’t seem to follow this trend much. Even though some producers are following this trend but still there is not enough input of technology. Technology varies from cameras to editing and each aspect of it is necessary to improvise film making. Even though Bangladeshi film makers are using expensive cameras more needs to be done on the editing part of the movies for example, animation and graphics. Summary of the finding. I tried to question people on topics that are the indicators of an excellent film industry with great potential. My questionnaire was designed to filter out facts that indicates if Bangladesh is about to see good days soon. The results were against the hopes. Like firstly I asked people if they watch Bangladeshi movies, and most results came out negative. So this means Bangladesh film industry is still in a point where the audience doesn’t even prefer watching it. This clearly indicates a industry with no good days coming soon. I also asked them if there was potentiality of being a standard film industry within the next few years. Even this came out to be negative responses. Bangladeshi people don’t believe so. Still people of Bangladesh believe there is a long way to go to become world-class industry like Hollywood. Furthermore I tried to set the old 90’s movie as the benchmark of quality-movies of Bangladesh. I asked the audience how good were the movies compared to these old movies of the industry. The respondents believed contemporary Bangladeshi movies were nowhere near those movies. The old movies had excellent scripts and those made the movies more interesting. It didn’t matter who the actors were or how good the film budget were. The stories were compelling enough to make it likable. I have also put emphasize on the technical aspect of the films. For example, I wanted to see if Bangladesh film industry was progressing in terms of technology. A good film industry not only keeps improvising its stories and scripts but also its technological resources. Suppose modern drone-cameras, infrared cameras gives better shots of scene and makes it more dramatic. But people responded no such technology is used on most of the films and hence making it more back-dated. Finally I also wanted to see if ticket prices were a crucial factor determining the audience level of a film industry. Then again, people said the average ticket prices of Bangladeshi films were considerable and not high. Hence this was not a major factor that stops people from going to the cinemas. My research findings didn’t completely go along with my hypothesis. To recall, my central hypothesis was that I will find people believing -Bangladesh film industry to be on the verge of seeing a new golden era very soon. However this wasn’t the fact. Instead respondents of my survey seemed to be dislike Bangladeshi movies and the industry. They brought out several points which don’t match my hypothesis. This was a shock for me both as a
  • 18. researcher and a fan of this topic. But I did manage to find valuable findings which I was expecting to know through conducting this research. Recommendations 1. 7. Hindi cinema’s music, choreography, story is far better than that of Bangla cinema, that’s why they watch Hindi cinema. 13. In the love stories, usually it is shown that an upper class girl and a lower class boy fall in love and they overcome the class conflict-which is absurd and usually does not happen in reality. Only there are very few good cinema halls where women can feel comfortable. 18. We should have such kind of cinema which will deal with other ignored factors of Bangladesh. 19. Directors and producers should change their target group of audiences. If they make cinema for educated and cultured audiences, then, of course, they will go to cinema halls regularly. 20. We need stronger sensor board which will be strict enough to sensor a cinema. 21. We need better technicians and international-standard equipment.
  • 19. Conclusion Bangladeshi cinema can also achieve world class quality. We have a lot of creative hands which can be used to fuel a revolution in cinema industry. Every sector of a cinema should be improved by which our young generation will be encouraged to watch Bangla cinema. Clean, morally sound, social cinemas are liked by all. Not only educated viewers but also illiterate viewers like clean films. No one likes vulgar posters, illogical titles. Ultimately majority viewers are aware of vulgar scenes in the films. Whether he or she is educated or not but most of them agree at one point, that if better films are produced, more audiences will come to cinema halls. Environment of cinema hall is very important. Most of the people from lower class agree that they don’t feel comfortable to bring their wives in cinema hall. If we want to bring back our young generation to appreciate our own culture then we have to struggle against the existing dirt of this industry. Now the qualities of Bengali cinemas are better that those released in previous years, but these are still not at par with Hollywood or Bollywood movies. Bangladesh is trying to make good movies but there are areas in film- making where improvements are necessary. Yes, I am hopeful about a positive change in our local film industry as young minds and story-tellers are coming now. They are trying to tell new stories through fresh narratives and new interpretations of lives and societies… Some highly professional corporate bodies like Jazz Multi Media, ATN Entertainment, Impress TeleFilm, Runner Group, Asiatic – are investing to produce films while young audiences are enthused to watch these films.
