Local Woody Biomass from landscape management for decentralised renewable energy (Interreg NWEurope)
1. LocEnerWood
Local woody biomass from
landscape management for
decentralised renewable energy
What challenge or problem are you addressing? What is the need for the project?
Coppice systems in hedgerows, hollow paths and treelines are actually undermanaged due to high
management costs. This leads to loss in biodiversity and cultural-historical value, to safety risks and to conflicts
between different landscape users. When managed, the biomass is sometimes dumped or burned on the spot.
However, restoring historical management systems such as coppicing creates a win-win : it turns woody
biomass from waste into a renewable energy source to be processsed in highly efficient furnaces in low-energy
buildings.
Objective of the project: What your project wants to achieve/change
To facilitate sustainable use of locally-grown woody biomass from landscape management as a source of
renewable energy for low-energy buildings through supporting management, harvesting and processing by
local farmers.
Why do you need transnational
cooperation?
The project wants to build on experience
from different regions in Northwest
Europe, with different resource policies,
different traditions in landscape
management and different actors and
natural resource management systems.
By cooperating, we can build on the
strengths and learn from the failures and
weaknesses experienced by a broad set
of partners.
What kind or partners are you
looking for?
Municipalities, farmers cooperatives,
private landscape contractors, waste
management industry, land owners,
natural resource managers, consultants,
arborists, ….
