RETAIL TRADE
 Involves buying and selling of goods to the final
consumer.
 Retail business is divided into 2
 Small-scale retail business: those that require small amount
of money to start and operate.
 Large scale retail business: those that require large amount
of money to start and operate.
Small scale retailers
 They are found in most parts of the country
 Mostly operated as one man business
 Easy to start
 Require little capital to start and operate
 They deal with fast moving goods.
Classification of small scale
retailers
 Those with shops: these
have permanet place and
structures, they include:
 Single shops
 Tied shops
 Kiosk
 Mobile shops
 Market stalls
 Canteen
 Mail order stores
 Those without shops:
these have No permanet
place and structures,
they include:
 Itenerant traders/
hawkers/peddlers
 Roadside sellers
 Open air market traders
 Automatic vending
machine
Small scale retailers with shops

 They are mainly located
in strategic places like
busy street,residential
area,work place.

 These are permanet
stands that are found in
market places.

to individuals by local
authority.

institutions such as
school,hospitals,college
 They sell goods mainly to
those in that institution.
4. Tied shops
- They sell goods of
one particular
manufacturer
- The shop can not
deal with goods
from another
manufacturer
 5. Single shops- runned by one person.

1. itenerant trader/hawker/peddler
These are traders that move from place to place looking for
customers.
2. Roadside sellers
 These sell their goods at
places where other
people pass by like busy
roads and bus stations.
 They place their goods
on trays, empty sacks or
mat.
3. Automatic vending machine
 This is an automatic
machine that operates
when money is inserted
in it, the machine then
offers the product. Theu
can be operated any time
since there is no
attendant.

 This is a place set aside
by the government
where people can meet
to buy and sell goods.
Sellers pay entrance fee
to be allowed to carry out
their goods.

goods more conviniently
3. Incur low cost of running
business
4. Business are flexible
5. They sell mostly low priced
goods
 Disadvantages
1. tiring for traders since they
have no permanent place
2. they face stiff competition
from those who have shops
3. Unfavourable conditions
may interfere with their work
4.They offer limited variety of
goods
5.Some times they offer
defective goods.
Advantages of small scale retailers
 1. easy to raise capital
 2.retailers are in close contact with the customers
 3. simple to start
 4. smaller risk involved in the business
 5. simple to manage
 6. few legal formalities are required
 7. the trader can easily change from one product to the
other.
Disadvantages of small scale
retailers
 1. limited access to loan facilities
 2. may not hire specialist
 3. may suffer bad debt if offer credit facilities
 4. they enjoy little profit since they have used low
capital
