Regulation Works
Any structure constructed to regulate the discharge, full supply level or
velocity in a canal is known as Regulation Work
Types & Location:
1. Head Regulator or Head Sluice  at Barrage/Weir, Dam
2. Cross Regulator  on Parent Canal
3. Distributory Head Regulator  on Off-take Canal
4. Canal Fall  along Parent Canal or Off-take Canal
5. Canal Escape  on any type of canal
6. Canal Outlet  on Distributing Canal
Head Regulator
Weir
Regulation Works
Types & Purpose:
1. Head Regulator or Head Sluice  to divert water to parent channel from
a barrage or weir
2. Cross Regulator  to head up water in the parent channel to divert
some of it through an off take channel or distributory canal
3. Distributory Head Regulator  to control the amount of water flowing in
to off take channel
4. Canal Fall  to lower the water level of the canal
5. Canal Escape  to allow release of excess water from the canal system
6. Canal Outlet  to take out water for delivery to the field channel or
water courses
Cross Regulator
Functions:
1. To raise the water level of u/s and feeds the off-take channel
2. Helps in closing the supply to the d/s of parent channel, for the purpose of
repairs etc.,
3. Helps in absorbing fluctuation in various sections of the canal system, and in
preventing the possibilities of beaches in the tail reaches
4. Incidently, bridges and other communication works can be combined with it.
Distributor Head Regulator
Functions:
1. To regulate or control the supplies to the off-taking canal
2. They serve as a meter for measuring discharge entering into the off-taking canal
3. To control silt entry into off-taking canal
4. They help in shutting off the supplies when not needed or when the off-taking
canal is required to be closed for repairs
Canal Fall
A fall or drop is an irrigation structure constructed across a canal to lower down its
water level and destroy the surplus energy liberated from the falling water which
may otherwise scour the bed and banks of the canal.
Generally, the slope of the natural ground surface is not uniform throughout the
alignment. In such cases, a vertical drop is provided to step down the canal bed and
then it is continued with permissible slope until another step down is necessary.
Such vertical drops are known as Canal Falls
Types of Canal Fall
1. Ogee Fall  to provide smooth transition and to reduce disturbance and impact
2. Rapid Fall  consists of a glacis sloping at 1: 0 to 1:20. Very high cost of
construction
3. Stepped Fall  next development of rapid fall. Cost of construction is high
4. Notch Fall  the fall is consists of one or more trapezoidal notches
5. Vertical Drop Fall  high velocity jet enters the deep pool of water in the cistern
and dissipation of energy is affected by turbulent diffusion
6. Glacis Type Fall  utilizes standing wave phenomenon for dissipation of energy
Types:
a) Straight Glacis Type
b) Parabolic Glacis Type of Montague type
Suitability of Canal Fall
Ogee Fall
This fall is recommended when the natural ground surface suddenly changes to a steeper
slope along the alignment of the canal.
Rapid Fall
The rapid fall is suitable when the slope of the natural ground surface is even and long
Stepped Fall
This fall is suitable in places where the sloping ground is very long and requires long glacis
to connect the higher bed level with lower bed level.
Notch Fall
Suitable for greater discharges where energy dissipation is a major problem. This fall
consists one or more trapezoidal notches in a high crested wall
Canal Escape
It is a channel constructed to remove surplus water from an irrigation channel (main
canal, branch canal, or distributory etc.,) into a natural drain
The water in the irrigation channel may become surplus due to
1. Due to difficulty in regulation at the head
2. Excess rainfall in upper reaches
3. Outlets being closed by cultivators as they find the demand of water is over
Canal escapes act as safely valves in case of accidental breaches.
Canal Escape
Types based on purpose
1. Canal Scouring Escape
This escape is constructed for the purpose of scouring of excess silt deposited in the head
reaches from time to time
2. Surplus Escape or Regulator Escape.
In this type, sill of the escape is kept at canal bed level and the flow is controlled by gate
3. Tail Escape
This type of escape is provided at the tail end of the canal and is useful to maintain
required FSL
Types of Canal Escapes based on design
1. Regulator or Sluice type Escape
2. Weir type Escape
Scouring Escape
Surplus Escape
Canal Outlet
A canal outlet or a module is a small structure built at the head of the water course
so as to connect it with a minor or a distributory channel.
Requirements of a good module:
 It should fit well to the decided principles of water distribution.
 It should be simple to construct.
 It should work efficiently with a small working head.
 It should be cheaper.
 It should be sufficiently strong with no moving parts, thus avoiding periodic
maintenance.
 It should be such as to avoid interference by cultivators.
Types of Canal Outlet
1. Non-modular Module
Non-modular modules are those through which the discharge depends upon the
head difference between the distributory and the water course.
Common examples are Open sluice, Drowned pipe outlet etc.,
2. Semi-modules or Flexible modules
Flexible modules are those through which the discharge is independent of the
water level of the water course but depends only upon the water level of the
distributory so long as a minimum working head is available.
Examples are pipe outlet, open flume type etc.
Types of Canal Outlet
3. Rigid Modules
Rigid modules or modular outlets are those through which discharge is constant
and fixed within limits, irrespective of the fluctuations of the water levels of either
the distributory or of the water course or both.
An example is Gibb’s module:

  • 3. Regulation Works Any structure constructed to regulate the discharge, full supply level or velocity in a canal is known as Regulation Work Types & Location: 1. Head Regulator or Head Sluice  at Barrage/Weir, Dam 2. Cross Regulator  on Parent Canal 3. Distributory Head Regulator  on Off-take Canal 4. Canal Fall  along Parent Canal or Off-take Canal 5. Canal Escape  on any type of canal 6. Canal Outlet  on Distributing Canal

  • 6. Regulation Works Types & Purpose: 1. Head Regulator or Head Sluice  to divert water to parent channel from a barrage or weir 2. Cross Regulator  to head up water in the parent channel to divert some of it through an off take channel or distributory canal 3. Distributory Head Regulator  to control the amount of water flowing in to off take channel 4. Canal Fall  to lower the water level of the canal 5. Canal Escape  to allow release of excess water from the canal system 6. Canal Outlet  to take out water for delivery to the field channel or water courses
  • 7. Cross Regulator Functions: 1. To raise the water level of u/s and feeds the off-take channel 2. Helps in closing the supply to the d/s of parent channel, for the purpose of repairs etc., 3. Helps in absorbing fluctuation in various sections of the canal system, and in preventing the possibilities of beaches in the tail reaches 4. Incidently, bridges and other communication works can be combined with it.

  • 10. Distributor Head Regulator Functions: 1. To regulate or control the supplies to the off-taking canal 2. They serve as a meter for measuring discharge entering into the off-taking canal 3. To control silt entry into off-taking canal 4. They help in shutting off the supplies when not needed or when the off-taking canal is required to be closed for repairs

Canal Fall A fall or drop is an irrigation structure constructed across a canal to lower down its water level and destroy the surplus energy liberated from the falling water which may otherwise scour the bed and banks of the canal. Generally, the slope of the natural ground surface is not uniform throughout the alignment. In such cases, a vertical drop is provided to step down the canal bed and then it is continued with permissible slope until another step down is necessary. Such vertical drops are known as Canal Falls

  • 16. Types of Canal Fall 1. Ogee Fall  to provide smooth transition and to reduce disturbance and impact 2. Rapid Fall  consists of a glacis sloping at 1: 0 to 1:20. Very high cost of construction 3. Stepped Fall  next development of rapid fall. Cost of construction is high 4. Notch Fall  the fall is consists of one or more trapezoidal notches 5. Vertical Drop Fall  high velocity jet enters the deep pool of water in the cistern and dissipation of energy is affected by turbulent diffusion 6. Glacis Type Fall  utilizes standing wave phenomenon for dissipation of energy Types: a) Straight Glacis Type b) Parabolic Glacis Type of Montague type

  • 23. Suitability of Canal Fall Ogee Fall This fall is recommended when the natural ground surface suddenly changes to a steeper slope along the alignment of the canal. Rapid Fall The rapid fall is suitable when the slope of the natural ground surface is even and long Stepped Fall This fall is suitable in places where the sloping ground is very long and requires long glacis to connect the higher bed level with lower bed level. Notch Fall Suitable for greater discharges where energy dissipation is a major problem. This fall consists one or more trapezoidal notches in a high crested wall

Canal Escape It is a channel constructed to remove surplus water from an irrigation channel (main canal, branch canal, or distributory etc.,) into a natural drain The water in the irrigation channel may become surplus due to 1. Due to difficulty in regulation at the head 2. Excess rainfall in upper reaches 3. Outlets being closed by cultivators as they find the demand of water is over Canal escapes act as safely valves in case of accidental breaches.
  • 25. Canal Escape Types based on purpose 1. Canal Scouring Escape This escape is constructed for the purpose of scouring of excess silt deposited in the head reaches from time to time 2. Surplus Escape or Regulator Escape. In this type, sill of the escape is kept at canal bed level and the flow is controlled by gate 3. Tail Escape This type of escape is provided at the tail end of the canal and is useful to maintain required FSL Types of Canal Escapes based on design 1. Regulator or Sluice type Escape 2. Weir type Escape

  • 30. Canal Outlet A canal outlet or a module is a small structure built at the head of the water course so as to connect it with a minor or a distributory channel. Requirements of a good module:  It should fit well to the decided principles of water distribution.  It should be simple to construct.  It should work efficiently with a small working head.  It should be cheaper.  It should be sufficiently strong with no moving parts, thus avoiding periodic maintenance.  It should be such as to avoid interference by cultivators.

  • 33. Types of Canal Outlet 1. Non-modular Module Non-modular modules are those through which the discharge depends upon the head difference between the distributory and the water course. Common examples are Open sluice, Drowned pipe outlet etc., 2. Semi-modules or Flexible modules Flexible modules are those through which the discharge is independent of the water level of the water course but depends only upon the water level of the distributory so long as a minimum working head is available. Examples are pipe outlet, open flume type etc.
  • 34. Types of Canal Outlet 3. Rigid Modules Rigid modules or modular outlets are those through which discharge is constant and fixed within limits, irrespective of the fluctuations of the water levels of either the distributory or of the water course or both. An example is Gibb’s module:
