Bastions were made to safeguard the fort from enemies.
Big holes were made in the bastions to see at a distance and attack on
enemies coming towards the fort from several directions.
Bastions are built at a height and provide space to look on
distant places from several directions. Soldiers can peep through
its holes safely. However, with flat walls one could see in one
particular direction only.

4. - How They lived?: The lesson takes us to the question of why certain things were followed or constructed in a
particular manner.
For example why were bastions important? Did everyone in the kingdom live inside the fort? Did everyone have
similar houses?
No, As can be seen from the picture, the king and nobles lived in the fort but the peasants and other people lived in
farms and small villages outside the fort.

Answer.
(i) Fountains would have worked by getting their water
supply from large tanks or reservoirs.
(ii) Large doors, windows and ventilators would have
been made to allow air and light enter the building.
(iii) Sharp cutting tools like chisel and hammer made
up of iron would have been used for such fine carving.
(iv) If there was no electricity for one week, most of
our daily activities would get hampered. There will be
no water, TVs and computers will not work, phones
will stop working, internet connectivity will go off, no
lights, no fans and coolers. Thus, it will lead to a
completely drastic situation.
