Introduction
 I emerge from a very destitute family background: very rural, poverty,
less skilled parents and very slimy chance of attaining a successful life
 The only tool that I was encourage to use to fight poverty was education
 I started my primary school under the tree
 Then in the shop
 In the dilapidated farmers house, drinking water with animals, using
nearby shrubs to relieve ourselves
 Then moved in to a real school building for my high school education
 Then online teaching and learning as my career to date
 I never knew how the real school building look like until my high school
time
The route I walked as a
child until a teacher
Under the tree
In the shop
In the famers house
In a classroom
In the cloud/
sky classroom
One of the website media 24 described
my change of scenery as follows
 https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/national/education/2016-12-14-world-
award-for-sa-teacher-who-swapped-classroom-for-online-tuition/
Education that was / is based on four elements and values
 Education was based on the following basic elements:
 Literacy: how to speak, read, write
 Numeracy: counting
 Work experience: practical skills: crafting, sewing, baking, cocking, etc
 Social service: ploughing for other people
 The following aspects were incorporated in the elements of purposeful
education:
 Determination
 Discipline and respect
 Goal orientated: e.g when I grow up I want to become…………… to build my
parents a very big house
 Hard work
 Based on the above mentioned facts:
 It was possible and its still is ,to be what you want to be even in hard times as
long as you don’t loose focus of what you want
 Example: My going to school made me who I am today because of education
that was more based on those four elements coupled with the basic values of
life
 From that day the desire to use education to change the lives of needy
people got so entrenched in me in such that my teaching and learning
career beard good fruit to many former students.
 The desire to use practical projects outside the classroom to unlock and
inspire learners future careers and connect their natural talents with
opportunities through education became more and more entrenched in me
hence the following projects in school:
Food production projects with FTFA
 I taught Economics and Management Sciences in grade 7 for
years
 I use Revised National OBE Curriculum which is just a frame
work that needs flesh to be added on it by the teacher
 The assessment styles are divided in to case studies,
assignments, practical projects and theory
 The topics are related more on the 17 UNSDG’s objectives :
sustainable growth and development, understanding
productivity , production and consumption, community
resources, correcting socio economics imbalances, personal
wealth and sectors of economy and using of technology
 All these topics require practical teaching more than theory in
class hence my teaching style: Problem/Project Based
Learning (PBL)approach
Teach by doing
Sectors of economy: Chain of production
 PRIMARY SECTOR(initial stage of production) School garden
.Teaching this topic requires practical project:
Secondary sector
 In factories: where production takes place
Visited Woolworth market in the Mall
 TERTIARY SECTOR : End product packed in the shelves
They benefitted from the practical project
Community members benefitted
Selling in the mall supported by Woolworths
To use the garden as a laboratory
Attracted visitors from other schools
Tangible difference made by taking learning beyond the classroom
Accomplishing my Young Scientist dream

to me
Greetings Ma'am
Apr 30 (4 days ago)
My name is Stephen Mafokoane, I am not quite sure that you remember me, I was in the 2011 group.
Right now I am in my first year at Pearson Institute, doing Biotechnology/Pharmacy.
Basically, you made me to choose this lane, you made me to have love for herbs and medicine.
So I want to return to the community, and only you can help me with that.
I am thinking of using The Grade 7 Theory lesson on sectors of economy. The one about how products are
made fron raw materials until packed.
My aim right now is to produce those medicines again, and help kids. With you not being at Pula-Madibogo
anymore, some kids might struggle with the head sores, fungi etc.
So ma'am, I cannot start this without you, you have the methods, you have more knowledge on this. And
this is your project, I could not just hijack it.
All I need is your help, confirmation and blessings.
Stay blessed.
Regards

about the project
Learning beyond the classroom through technology
resources
Teaching with technology :Through the skills from the then MASTEC
,Microsoft ,School Net and COZA CARES once every Friday(FRIDAY TECHNOLOGY)
I take learners in our mini media lab to use the tools to augment their learning.
Some time they skype with schools outside the country about collaborative
projects like reading, national symbols etc. The main aim being to create global
citizens who will be able to compete globally with their peers.#Teachersmatter

 Ownership of school by parents
 Less vandalism
 More life than the lives of people
 The school became a hub of service delivery
beyond reading and writing in class
 Less poverty
 More farming skills acquired
Good morning madam Phuti Ragophala I want to express my sincere
appreciation to you for being the most superb school principal I have ever
known. Your leadership during the time that my two children have attended
your school Pula Madibogo has been remarkable and inspiring.
I know many other parents and learners feel the same way, even though
we might often forget to tell you how much we appreciate you. My son
Christopher Ramabu is doing very well at Dendron Secondary School
because of the foundation he got from your school. Attached are some
pictures of my son during the matrix dance function at Bolivia Lodge hall
last Saturday. Thank you for your wise and strong leadership. Sincerely Mr
and Mrs RAMABU.
Appreciation email from parent
From the two above mentioned practical projects:
 Two projects covered the following topics:
• sustainable growth and development
• under standing productivity
• community resources
• correcting socio economics imbalances
• personal wealth
• sectors of economy
• using of technology tools to learn
Lesson learnt
 Taking learning outside the classroom inspire ,unlock and
unearth learners hidden talents
 Learners become solution seekers for the challenges that
affect their community at an early age
 They develop critical thinking, creativity and innovative
skills as they work together
 Communication and collaboration skills instil more
confidence in them
 It is likely to pursue careers that they did practically than
the one done theory because they learn better by doing
 Sustainable and scalable project to be replicated
 Incorporating UNSDG’s in teaching and learning bears good
fruit
Way forward and recommendation
 Learners are gifted differently as such they don’t need to be taught
the same way
 Some are gifted academically while some are more in doing
 Use of PBL approach in teaching bears good fruit
 Equipping learners with survival skills will enable them to choose
careers of their choice at an early age for them to face uncertain
future with pride
THANK YOU

Learning beyond the classroom

  • 1. Learning beyond the classroom By Phuti Ragophala (Varkey Teacher Ambassador and Microsoft Online Educator Trainer Contact :082 839 3642 E mail address: phuthi.ragophala@gmail.com Skype ID:phuthi6
  • 2. Introduction  I emerge from a very destitute family background: very rural, poverty, less skilled parents and very slimy chance of attaining a successful life  The only tool that I was encourage to use to fight poverty was education  I started my primary school under the tree  Then in the shop  In the dilapidated farmers house, drinking water with animals, using nearby shrubs to relieve ourselves  Then moved in to a real school building for my high school education  Then online teaching and learning as my career to date  I never knew how the real school building look like until my high school time
  • 3. The route I walked as a child until a teacher Under the tree In the shop In the famers house In a classroom In the cloud/ sky classroom
  • 4. One of the website media 24 described my change of scenery as follows  https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/national/education/2016-12-14-world- award-for-sa-teacher-who-swapped-classroom-for-online-tuition/
  • 5. Education that was / is based on four elements and values  Education was based on the following basic elements:  Literacy: how to speak, read, write  Numeracy: counting  Work experience: practical skills: crafting, sewing, baking, cocking, etc  Social service: ploughing for other people  The following aspects were incorporated in the elements of purposeful education:  Determination  Discipline and respect  Goal orientated: e.g when I grow up I want to become…………… to build my parents a very big house  Hard work
  • 6.  Based on the above mentioned facts:  It was possible and its still is ,to be what you want to be even in hard times as long as you don’t loose focus of what you want  Example: My going to school made me who I am today because of education that was more based on those four elements coupled with the basic values of life  From that day the desire to use education to change the lives of needy people got so entrenched in me in such that my teaching and learning career beard good fruit to many former students.  The desire to use practical projects outside the classroom to unlock and inspire learners future careers and connect their natural talents with opportunities through education became more and more entrenched in me hence the following projects in school:
  • 7. Food production projects with FTFA  I taught Economics and Management Sciences in grade 7 for years  I use Revised National OBE Curriculum which is just a frame work that needs flesh to be added on it by the teacher  The assessment styles are divided in to case studies, assignments, practical projects and theory  The topics are related more on the 17 UNSDG’s objectives : sustainable growth and development, understanding productivity , production and consumption, community resources, correcting socio economics imbalances, personal wealth and sectors of economy and using of technology  All these topics require practical teaching more than theory in class hence my teaching style: Problem/Project Based Learning (PBL)approach
  • 9. Sectors of economy: Chain of production  PRIMARY SECTOR(initial stage of production) School garden .Teaching this topic requires practical project:
  • 10. Secondary sector  In factories: where production takes place
  • 11. Visited Woolworth market in the Mall  TERTIARY SECTOR : End product packed in the shelves
  • 12. They benefitted from the practical project
  • 14. Selling in the mall supported by Woolworths
  • 15. To use the garden as a laboratory
  • 16. Attracted visitors from other schools
  • 17. Tangible difference made by taking learning beyond the classroom
  • 18. Accomplishing my Young Scientist dream Stephen Mafokoane <stephen.mafokoane@gmail.com> to me Greetings Ma'am Apr 30 (4 days ago) My name is Stephen Mafokoane, I am not quite sure that you remember me, I was in the 2011 group. The one about how products are made fron raw materials until packed. My aim right now is to produce those medicines again, and help kids. With you not being at Pula-Madibogo anymore, some kids might struggle with the head sores, fungi etc. So ma'am, I cannot start this without you, you have the methods, you have more knowledge on this. And this is your project, I could not just hijack it. All I need is your help, confirmation and blessings. Stay blessed. Regards Appreciation email from former learner
  • 19. National documentary on SABC 3 Expresso about the project
  • 20. Learning beyond the classroom through technology resources Teaching with technology :Through the skills from the then MASTEC ,Microsoft ,School Net and COZA CARES once every Friday(FRIDAY TECHNOLOGY) I take learners in our mini media lab to use the tools to augment their learning. Some time they skype with schools outside the country about collaborative projects like reading, national symbols etc. The main aim being to create global citizens who will be able to compete globally with their peers.#Teachersmatter Check this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QnjoaQqfqI
  • 21.  Ownership of school by parents  Less vandalism  More life than the lives of people  The school became a hub of service delivery beyond reading and writing in class  Less poverty  More farming skills acquired
  • 22. Good morning madam Phuti Ragophala I want to express my sincere appreciation to you for being the most superb school principal I have ever known. Your leadership during the time that my two children have attended your school Pula Madibogo has been remarkable and inspiring. I know many other parents and learners feel the same way, even though we might often forget to tell you how much we appreciate you. My son Christopher Ramabu is doing very well at Dendron Secondary School because of the foundation he got from your school. Attached are some pictures of my son during the matrix dance function at Bolivia Lodge hall last Saturday. Thank you for your wise and strong leadership. Sincerely Mr and Mrs RAMABU. Appreciation email from parent
  • 23. From the two above mentioned practical projects:  Two projects covered the following topics: • sustainable growth and development • under standing productivity • community resources • correcting socio economics imbalances • personal wealth • sectors of economy • using of technology tools to learn
  • 24. Lesson learnt  Taking learning outside the classroom inspire ,unlock and unearth learners hidden talents  Learners become solution seekers for the challenges that affect their community at an early age  They develop critical thinking, creativity and innovative skills as they work together  Communication and collaboration skills instil more confidence in them  It is likely to pursue careers that they did practically than the one done theory because they learn better by doing  Sustainable and scalable project to be replicated  Incorporating UNSDG’s in teaching and learning bears good fruit
  • 25. Way forward and recommendation  Learners are gifted differently as such they don’t need to be taught the same way  Some are gifted academically while some are more in doing  Use of PBL approach in teaching bears good fruit  Equipping learners with survival skills will enable them to choose careers of their choice at an early age for them to face uncertain future with pride THANK YOU
