The enclosed courtyard forms the centrepiece of the
building’s long-term renovation programme, which
also includes a redesign of the galleries with contem-
porary interactive displays and the addition of a con-
servation laboratory, an auditorium, and 30 per cent
more exhibition space. Visitors are able to enter the
surrounding galleries from the courtyard, and out of
museum hours the space can also host a variety of
social events, including concerts and public perform-
ances. Designed ‘to do the most with the least,’ the
sensuous, fully glazed roof canopy allows the bathing
the courtyard with natural light and naturally ventilating
the space through louvres concealed in the eaves.
