8. The Civil Rights Movement
◻ On 20 January, 2009 Barack Obama was sworn in as the first
black President of the United States.
◻ Until at least the 1950s, African Americans faced
discrimination in every aspect of their lives.
◻ Authorities forced them to use separate entrances to
buildings; denied them access to ‘whites only’ swimming pools,
hospitals, schools and housing.
