4. PREFACE
Midwifery & Obstetrical Nursing: deals with the nursing care of
pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum period
Includes care of newborn besides sexual and reproductive health of
women throughout their lives.
The goal of nursing education is to prepare today’s student to meet the
challenges of tomorrow. This preparation must extend beyond mastery
of facts and skills.
Several changes in health care system and health care needs as well as
emerging health problems are observed in Bangladesh over the past
decades and the nursing education and services must be responsive to
those changes.
The slide represent curriculum for one year Diploma in Midwifery and
Obstetrical Nursing. We are the final year BSc in Nursing students and
we tried to make this curriculum as a part of “curriculum development”
under the student of “Nursing Education”.

Nursing
Degree Awarded
Diploma in Midwifery and Obstetrical Nursing
7. BACKGROUND
Special effort was made to assess the quality of the nursing
education in Bangladesh, particularly Senior Registered Nurse
(SRN) Curriculum, which was revised in 1989 and has been
implemented since 1991. Several studies were also carried out to
examine quality of nursing education as well as the practice of
nursing care in hospitals.
These studies revealed that the existing SRN curriculum did not
meet the goal to prepare client and community-oriented nurses.
Moreover, there was the discrepancy between what was taught in
the nursing institutes and what was practiced in the hospital
8. PHILOSOPHY
Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental questions about
existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. The
Bangladesh Nursing Council and its members hold the following
beliefs about person, environment, health, nursing, midwifery, and
nursing education.
• Person: is a unique being, holistic in nature with interactive bio-
physical, psycho-social, and spiritual dimensions.
• Environment: consists of bio-physical and socio-cultural elements
that impact people’s health.
• Health: is a state of complete physical, mental, social and spiritual
well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
• Nursing: assists clients (individuals, families and communities-
aggregates of people within communities) to attain physical, mental,
social and spiritual well-being.
• Midwifery: is care of the girl-child, the adolescent and the adult
woman prior to, during, and following pregnancy.
• Nursing education: is a dynamic, continuous learning process of
acquiring nursing and midwifery knowledge and skills that bring
about changes of student behaviors.
