6. Phlebotomus (Sandy Flies)
Sand flies are small (1.5-5μm) , very hairy with long legs, sandy in colour,
with lanceolate wings which are carried upward and backward at rest
7. Adult Musca domestica
1- Gray fly with small size 5-10 mm in size.
2- composed of three parts ( head , thorax and abdomen) .
8. Antenna of Musca
1- Consists of 3 segments, the 3rd (terminal) is
bigger carrying dorsally a stiff hair called arista.
2- The arista carries simple hairs on both ventral
and dorsal sides
9. Posterior Respiratory spiracle of Musca
1- D- shaped 2 posterior respiratory spiracles
2- Each shows three S shape respiratory slites
10. Flea
1- Fleas are laterally compressed , wingless and small sized (2-4mm) with powerful legs.
2- The entire body is generally covered with stiff hairs which are directed backwards.
3- The body divided into head, thorax and abdomen, three pairs of gimping legs.
11. Lice
1- Flattened dorsoventrally , wingless
and gray in color.
2- Body is divided into a head, thorax,
and abdomen, mouth parts adapted for
piercing and sucking Antennae are short
and consist of five segments.
3- Thoracic segments fused having three
pairs of legs that adapted for clinging to
hairs or clothes with 8 abdominal
segments.
12. Lice egg
1- Oval
2- About 1mm in length
3- Operculum convex with crown- like projection and cemented
to fibers of clothing or hairs
13. Male :
1- It measures 0.2 mm.
2- Oval or rounded shaped
3- Formed of one piece ( fused cephalothorax and abdomen) Capitulum
projecting anteriorly
4- Have four pairs of legs the 3rd pair ends with long bristles while the
4th pair end with suckers.
Female :
Similar to the male but it differs in size in size it measures 0.4mm and
The posterior 2 pairs of legs ends with long bristles.
