2. Physical Changes in Matter
• Physical change: Alters the form or appearance of matter BUT does
not change it into another substance.
• Example: Broken glass

3. Chemical Changes in Matter
• Chemical change: A
change that produces one
or more new substances.
• A chemical reaction!!!

4. Signs of a Chemical Change
•Tarnishing
•Oxidizing (rust)
•Fire!
•Bubbles!

5. Conservation of Mass
• Antoine Lavoisier: ”Matter doesn’t disappear!”
• Law of Conservation of Mass: Matter is not created or destroyed in
any physical or chemical change.

6. Energy & Matter
• All changes in matter involve changes in energy
• Energy is also conserved!

7. Temperature and Thermal Energy
• Temperature: How hot or cold something is
• Thermal Energy: The total energy of the motion of all the particles in
an object.
• When matter changes, thermal energy is usually released or
absorbed.
