This document outlines Ben Brown's plans for a video project creating a tour guide of York that looks like a video game. It discusses his target audience of youths interested in gaming and niche hobbies. He plans to film locations around York related to gaming using pixel animation in Photoshop to make the guide resemble a retro video game. The document provides details on storyboarding, equipment, personnel, audio planning, and locations to be filmed. The goal is to create an entertaining guide that appeals to gaming interests of the target youth demographic.
3. RESEARCH
My idea is to make a tour guide that looks like a videogame where youths
who like niche things go to locations around York like indoor entertainment
and stores that cell fiction lie comic and videogame stores. My research
helped me come up with this idea because my niche audience like spending
most of their time using technology to play videogames and go on social
media, this type of audience that had the same interest I have made me
base the idea around everything they like and them using technology all the
time made me make the idea have the theme of technology (e.g. the
locations in the guide are to do with the niche technology they like and the
guide itself looks like a videogame which is the thing they like to play most
of the time). My research into existing products made me base where my
locations would be around York, so many videogame stores and indoor
activities to do compared to boring museums and ruins where the youths
would want to go to made me choose them to be the locations where my
audience would go to. I did experiments and through them I learned of
pixlemantion on photoshop and good camera quality on my iPad, because
the audience like videogames I saw I could make my guide look like a
videogame and use pixelmation to make everything have a retro videogame
look and because my audience mostly like to look at videos (most of the
4. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES TO
USE
For my project Iām going to film everything
with my iPad in a first-person perspective in
long shots and the project as a whole with
have little to know cuts in it. The main part of
my project will be editing animation onto real
life, Iāll use photoshop to make simple
pixlemation animations which Iāll put different
colored backgrounds behind so I can put it
onto the background of my real-life footage
to make the guide look like a retro videogame.
This will appeal to my target audience because
they like to play videogames as a main hobby,
5. CONVENTIONS OF YOUR
CHOSEN FORMAT/GENRE
YOU ARE WORKING TO
1. Health: Iāll use Photoshop to draw a pixel heart with a red bar next to it on the top left of the screen and Iāll
use the video format on photoshop to animate the red bar getting shorter, Iāll paint its background green so
I can put it onto the top of the real-life footage on Premiere.
2. Mini Map: Iāll use Photoshop to draw a small blue pixel map surrounded by a yellow outline and it contains
yellow explanation marks on the top right of the screen and Iāll use the video format on photoshop to
animate the map inside the outline moving in all directions and in certain directions you go a yellow
explanation mark will appear, Iāll paint its background green so I can put it onto the top of the real-life
footage on Premiere.
3. Rucksack: Iāll use Photoshop to draw a small blue pixel rucksack on the bottom left of the screen and Iāll use
the video format on photoshop to animate the rucksack opening and closing, Iāll paint its background green
so I can put it onto the top of the real-life footage on Premiere.
4. Weapon: Iāll use Photoshop to draw a blue pixel outline that shows a weapon and when the player draws a
weapon the outline gets filled with whatever the weapon is (if the player has a ranged weapon itās ammo will
be beneath shown in numbers) and Iāll use the video format on photoshop to animate whatever weapon the
player has appears in the outline (and the numbers for ammo appear underneath if you have a raged
weapon), Iāll paint its background green so I can put it onto the top of the real-life footage on Premiere.
5. NPC Dialogue: Iāll use Photoshop to draw a pixel button with words saying ātalk to...ā whatever the NPCās
name is and a blue pixel text box that writes what their saying in yellow writing and Iāll use the video format
on photoshop to animate the button flash when you choose to talk to an NPC and have the text boxās
sentences appear when an NPC is talking, Iāll paint its background green so I can put it onto the top of the
real-life footage on Premiere.
All this links to my target audience because theyāre all parts of a videogame (e.g. health is used to keep the
character you play as alive), all these separate things will add to making the guide like a videogame by having
7. LOCATIONS
Iām going to film most of my footage in York City and
film the outside of the locations I need and then film the
rest in my home, I donāt need to do reconnaissance
because Iāve lived in York for most of my life so I know
where the places I filmed are, but I will do reconnaissance
to see how crowded the area is on the days I need to film.
The restrictions that I may face will be that a place maybe
too crowded to film anything, the place maybe
inaccessible or rain will stop the camera from filming the
location clearly. The risks that I may face will be crowds
getting in the way of the shot or they may tripe over the
camera and props or rain may break the camera and
props. Iāll manage this all by going early in the morning
or on a weekday to film in the places I need, if a place is
inaccessible Iāll go to a backup place to film, I will check
8. EQUIPMENT
Because the original idea for my year one
FMP relayed to much on the collegeās
equipment that was part of what caused my
original idea to be botched, so Iām going to
use my own equipment to film my project.
The equipment Iām going to use is: College
Computer, iPad Camera, Tripod, Coats, Hats,
Wigs, Toy Melee Weapons (e.g. a sword) and
Nerf Guns. The only thing Iāll need from
college is the computer, but I use that all day
everyday on college weeks so itās accessible
9. PERSONNEL
Both my cast and crew will be me and my parents, we will film the
project and act in it, also availability and transport wonāt be a problem
because weāre always available to film and we all use a car frequently
so we can use it to go to the places and film the scenes I need, we
donāt need anyone else to make this project.
Mum:
Strengths- My Mum thrives in the technical department because sheās
good at camera work (producing a lot of creative shots like long shots,
reaction shots, moving shots, overhead shots, establishing shots, etc).
My Mum also sometimes helps me with doing creative editing for my
projects (picking out good transitions to use, sheās very good at
picking out the right sound effects and music for individual scenes).
Weaknesses- My Mum is good in the technical department but sheās
camera shy which leaves me with a shortage of actors to use. My Mum
also doesn't like when people are near when weāre filming (filming
could be embarrassing for her and the passers by) so we canāt film
when other people are around, and this delays filming.
Dad:
Strengths- My Dad is the best actor I have; he always becomes one
with the role and does over the top or convincing acting for a
character heās playing (he thrived in the role as Tommy Wiseau where
he was greatly funny because of his over-the-top acting of a loser who
takes himself too seriously). My Dad also provides good ideas on set
for acting and the story which improves the idea I was originally going
to make (when I was filming a movie about Tommy Wiseau, he came
up with using Wiseausā catchphrases to make the dialogue hilarious by
pulling the best parts form the source material that made it great.
Weaknesses- My Dad may be a good actor but sometimes he may not
feel like acting which makes the performance less exciting and more
11. STORYBOARD - VIDEO
ļ I drew the gameplay mechanics on the storyboard for my flat plan.
ļ I coloured in the drawings for my colour plan.
This whole story board appeals to my target audience because everything looks
like a videogame and contains locations they would want to go to. Everything
looks like a videogame because thatās one of the things my audience enjoys
doing most so this storyboard show they get to live what they enjoy playing and
all the locations it contains are places they'd to in their spare time and getting
12. AUDIO AND
OTHER PLANNING
1. Talking: Through out shots 1 to 11 talking will be heard, the narrator will talk all
the way through it while shots 6, 8 and 9 will have NPCās talking to you, Iāll
make the sound effect myself by talking as the narrator and getting my Dad to
talk as the NPCs.
2. Music: Through out shots 1 to 11 music will play, upbeat music will play from
shot 1 to 6 but on shots 7 and 9 action music will play, Iāll take music from
Adobe Stock to get my music.
3. Footsteps: Through out shots 1 to 11 a walking sound effect will play, Iāll make
the sound effect myself by walking on rocks.
4. Door opening: In shots 1, 5, 8 and 10 door opening and closing door sound
effects will play, Iāll make the sound effect myself by opening and closing the
doors in my house.
5. City sounds: In shot 3 city sound effects will play (traffic, walking talking etc), Iāll
take the sound effect from a YouTube video.
6. Ping: In shot 4 arrows pointing to the gameplay mechanics will make a ping
sound, Iāll take the sound effect from a YouTube video.
7. Metal being placed in bag: In shot 6 metal being place in a bag sound effect will
play, Iāll make the sound effect myself by placing a metal object in a bag.
8. Stabbing: In shot 7 and 9 a stabbing sound effect will play, Iāll take the sound
effect from a YouTube video.
9. Neck Snap: In shot 7 a neck snap sound effect will play, Iāll take the sound effect
from a YouTube video.
10. Axe hitting target: In shot 8 an axe throwing sound effect will play, Iāll take the
sound effect from a YouTube video.
14. AUDIO AND OTHER PLANNING
PART 3
This audio list and script appeals to my target audience because the list uses
audio similar to videogames and the script is entirely based and similar to a
videogame. The audio list links to my target audience because all the audio is
similar to that in videogames (which is one of the main hobby youths like to do),
the list contains real life sounds to sound real ā similar to videogames trying to be
real, it contains techno music to sound futuristic like videogames try to do to look
like their ahead of time with their console and graphic technology and it contains
foley action sound effects to make combat seem real and brutal similar to
videogames trying to be realistic in their fighting and gore as possible to try and
look real life so people can feel like their actually living the carnage their not
allowed to do in real life. My script appeals to my target audience because all the
dialogue takes inspiration from videogames, the narrator tells the story
throughout the script and gives tips on how you can play the game just like how
you start every game; there will always be a tutorial where a narrator (because the
players to lazy to read) tells you how each gameplay mechanic works (e.g.: how to
walk and run etc) and to explain big parts of the story when the gameplay can't
show the story and the NPC dialogue in the script is accurate in how they give you
quests to help them with most easy of tasks they could do themself just like in
videogames where as soon as you talk to someone (or they'll just run up to you
and talk to you) and ask your help with delivering a package or getting their lost
items. All these gameplay mechanics which the list and script are
extremely similar to make the guide experience feal like my youths are living a
videogame.
16. ORGANISATIONAL PLANNING
1. Who: Who is my crew; I am the director with me and my parents
will be the filmers, actors and I will be the editor of the tour advert. I
will play the main protagonist while my dad plays the NPCs and
bandits, him and my mum will also help with the filming while I do
all the editing and directing.
3. When: I will film the project on a sunny-day so all the locations
and scenes can be seen in their best light. Having a proper view of
all the beautiful places around York and the scenes that show the
fun things you can do in the city will make tourists want to come to
York.
4. Why: When people think of York, they think of a historical city but
through my research I learned of that there are many Geeks and
Gamer attractions that is an untouched treasure trove of successful
marketing. In my research I learned that this cities Geeks and
Gamers attractions has a high percentage of appealing to the 16-
to-24-year-old demographic, I want my guide to be a showcase of
all the Geeks and Gamer attractions in York that will entice many
gamers and geeks to come here for the attractions.
