3. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:.
Define the terms environment, poaching and
extinction.
State human activities on the environment.
Explain how human activities badly influence the
environment through air, land and water pollution.
4. THE ENVIRONMENT
• The term environment usually refer to an
organism’s surroundings. For example, we can
talk about the classroom environment.
• This means all the living and non living things
that tare in the classroom, such as learners
,desks and books as well as the activities that
take place there.
5. HUMAN AND THE ENVIRONMENT
o Humans have had the ability to change the
natural environment for thousands of years. The
environment in nearly every ecosystem has been
changed by human activities.
6. HUMAN ACTIVITIES THAT AFFECT THE
ENVIRONMENT
• Air pollution: The burning of fossil fuels such
as coals and oil have a bad influence on the
environment. This activity contribute largely to
global warming.
6
7. MAJOR SOURCES OF AIR POLLUTION
• Industries.
• Automobiles and Domestic fuels.
• Smoke.
• Aerosols
• What else can you include?
7
8. LAND POLLUTION
• One fourth of area is covered by land.
• Land is a earth which is occupied by people for
shelter, occupation, etc...
Causes of land pollution
• Mining, erosion, household garbage.
• Urbanization and concentration of Population.
• Municipal Solid Waste.
• Industrial Waste and Hazardous Waste.
9. • Agriculture: humans are involved in agricultural
activities in order to feed the growing population.
• Cultivation
• Irrigation
• Deforestation
9
10. WATER POLLUTION
• Water pollution is the contamination of water
bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and
groundwater).
• This form of environmental degradation occurs
when pollutants are directly or indirectly
discharged into water bodies without adequate
treatment to remove harmful compounds.
12. CONSERVATION OF WATER RESOURCES
• Use less water.
• Use environmentally-friendly household
products.
• Apply natural pesticides and fertilizers.
• Don’t litter.
• Dispose off toxic products with care.
• Prevent dumping of e-wastes and plastic
wastes.
12
13. POACHING
o This is an illegal catching and killing of animals.
Too much of this act can result to extinction.
15. CONCLUSION
• The environment we live in is a beautiful place.
Let us not pollute it for our selfish needs.
• It is our responsibility to give the next generation
a better, hygienic future and to preserve energy
for future use.
• It is high time to take a step forward to curb the
environmental pollution and make it a place
suitable for better standards of living.
• It is imperative on our part to save our
environment.
