NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Tokyo
DIRECTOR
The NYU School of Professional Studies is seeking a Director to lead NYUSPS Tokyo, a joint
venture professional education center that offers noncredit applied programs for global
professionals in Japan. The Director of NYUSPS Tokyo is tasked with overseeing all academic
operations at NYUSPS Tokyo, leading faculty and academic staff, and spearheading new
program strategy for expansion in Japan. The Director of NYUSPS Tokyo serves as the primary
public-facing representative of the school and provides leadership and strategic vision for the
implementation of programs that are designed to meet the needs of professionals in Tokyo. The
Director will oversee all academic operations at NYUSPS Tokyo, and will devise strategic plans
to grow enrollment and increase revenue through targeted student outreach activities and new
program design. Professional education is symbiotic with the industries it serves, and therefore
the Director is responsible for cultivating relationships with the individuals, organizations and
institutions that inform offerings at NYUSPS Tokyo. Reporting to the Director, Global and
Strategic Initiatives at NYUSPS, the Director will also work closely with the NYUSPS Dean,
senior leadership at Nichii Gakkan (NYUSPS’s partner in Japan), and other key stakeholders at
NYU and in Tokyo.
Established in 2013 as the first international branch of the NYUSPS American Language
Institute (ALI), NYUSPS Tokyo initially offered high-quality, rigorous English-language programs
for students in Japan. In addition to English programs taught in the American academic style,
NYUSPS Tokyo now offers a range of professional development programs in key industry areas
that are critical to Tokyo’s economic targets. As of 2017, NYUSPS Tokyo began delivering
small-scale professional development courses and workshops in topics like business innovation,
marketing and strategic management.
This year, NYUSPS Tokyo introduced the NYUSPS Global Executive Certificate programs,
which are a noncredit credential designed specifically for the needs of Japanese industry, as
well as targeted at professionals who work in global contexts and want to advance their skills.
Each program is competency-based to build proficiency in particular industry areas, producing
skill-based outcomes that are directly applicable in the workplace. Drawing on pedagogic
models refined through many decades of NYUSPS delivering professional education in New
York, and centered around an approach focused on decision and application, the Global
Executive Certificate curriculum is localized to reflect the unique demands of each target sector
in Japan. Identifying and securing a director for NYUSPS Tokyo is critical to the success of the
