1. What's new in the English
flipped classroom?
2018 – 2019
Nina Patterson
2. The flipped classroom approach is nothing new to
my classes.
By giving my students access to materials, videos
and lessons they need to familiarise themselves
with before the actual class, I have gained time for
more creativity in the classroom and have been
able to focus on applying the students’ skills in
practical workshops .
3. Year 9 classes
Since 2017 we’ve been using the flipped classroom
approach with the students from the current 9 a and
9 b classes
With their Focus for Bulgaria coursebooks students
have access to a platform with interactive videos
featuring grammar and speaking practice lessons
www.english.com/focus
4. My current year 12 students have been
exposed to more variety and a wider range
of materials.
We also tried to gamify our classes using
Classcraft, which was not a success due to
the fact we did not have access to all the
functions, as we used the free version and
were unable to afford the full one.

5. So, this year, we decided to use
Google Classroom
And so far, it seems that it works!
6. What Google classroom
has provided me with:
Quick and easy access to my students
The opportunity to create and post a wide range of
materials and tasks, e.g. video lessons, presentations,
quizzes, project assignments
The opportunity to check students’ progress, exchange
opinions and share ideas
7. Year 9 Sample lessons
The Present Simple
Video: 2 grammar lessons with tasks - both presenting
and practising the different uses of the present simple
Writing task: 20 questions about you – students watch a video presentation
and write their answers to 20 personal questions using the present simple
Speaking task video: Preferences – students watch a conversation and
then perform the same dialogue, using either side
Listening for the present simple: Another day in Paradise, Phil Collins –
students watch the video, sing along and in class discuss the uses of the tense
8. Year 12 good practices
Migration issues
Reading task: 3 Migrant Stories by a Migrant writer –
students read 3 stories by Bulgarian writer Miroslav
Penkov in Google classroom, followed by a workshop
in class which leads to the writing of Visual poems on
migration in groups. The poems were later displayed
in a school exhibition
9. Year 12 good practices
Migration issues
Video and quiz in Google classroom: students watch an
episode from John Oliver’s show Last Week Tonight on
Immigration Courts and do a quiz on quizizz.com to check
their understanding.
This is followed by a discussion in class on immigrant rights,
used as the starting point in a lesson on debate and discussion
skills
Debate skills presentation and videos are posted in Google
classroom to help students prepare for their upcoming
group debates on 3 topics to do with migration
10. Year 12 good practices
Education and studying abroad
The assignment, including instructions, sources and deadlines, is posted in
Google classroom in the form of a PowerPoint presentation
Sample visuals created by students in the required format, including quizizz
games are also posted, so students can have clear examples of what is
expected
11. The pros
Students can work at their own pace and
listen to different accents
Students can watch a lesson or re-read the
materials as many times as they need
Most students find it motivating and work
better in class
12. The cons
It is time-consuming for the teachers as they
need to prepare more materials
Some students have not signed up and are
therefore inadequate in class
13. Is it all worth it?
Despite the difficulties, as a teacher I can say that anything
which can intrigue the students and motivate them to
develop their creativity and showcase their skills is definitely
worth the effort!
