WLV Skills Teachmeet 2014: Crossing the line with students: is that you or the other one? Kim McGowan and Emma Holgate

Kim McGowan and Emma Holgate (University of Cumbria) discussed their approach to student support and present an example of a successful initiative.

Like all Higher Education institutions, the University of Cumbria is committed to retention, employability, student satisfaction and student success. Information literacy professionals at Cumbria have a blended role that includes the support of students in information literacy skills and academic literacy skills (for example academic writing and critical thinking). Emma Holgate and Kim McGowan discussed the advantages and challenges associated with their blended role. They also described an innovative and rewarding student support case study centred around assignment feedback. The case study involved collaboration between a large cohort of Initial Teacher Education students, lecturers, a programme leader and information literacy professionals. It is hoped that this initiative can be replicated across the institution.

Editor's Notes

  • Kim: I was mainly nominated for the 2013 information literacy award because of my approach to student support. In essence for trying to be the librarian I really, really wish I’d met in 1998 when – as an elderly undergraduate – I started university. I’m lucky at Cumbria that I work within a team of like minded information practitioners who feel the same way as I do; that we want a student to leave a workshop or appointment muttering under their breath, ‘Oh, I get it now…’ I’m really happy that one of my like-minded colleagues is able to be with me today to talk about a case study of an extension of the kind of initiatives that got me nominated.
  • Em. Our team are also involved in: Open Days, Post Offer Applicant days, when we get to meet applicants and their parents; pre-induction preparation, Headstart, Peer Assisted Study Sessions, Mentoring Schemes & other retention initiatives
