Different ‘concepts’ and ‘definitions’ of sustainability:
• ‘Historic’ origin (early 18th century): Forestry
replanting the amount of timber that has been cut enables a
‘sustainable’ use of resources
• UN Commission ‘Our Common Future’ (1997) ‘Brundtland report’:
Humanity has the ability to make development sustainable to
ensure that it meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs.
• 2015: UN sustainable development goals (17 SDG)

Different ‘concepts’ and ‘definitions’ of sustainability:
• Today often shown as pillars, as a triangle or intersecting circles:
Environment – Society – Economy
(or Planet – People – Profit)
also indicating ‘trade-offs’ between the different objectives
– and the necessity to find some kind of ‘balance’
• However, today the term ‘sustainable’ is also often used as a synonym
for ‘long-term’ or ‘enduring’
