3. WHAT WE EAT IN AMERICA
 What We Eat in America (WWEIA), NHANES is a
national food survey conducted as a partnership
between the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services (DHHS) and the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA). WWEIA represents the
integration of two nationwide surveys - USDA's
Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals
(CSFII) and HHS' NHANES. The two surveys were
integrated in 2002.

9. Summary of Intake Trends in US Adults
From 1971 to 2009-2010:
• There was an increase in calories from for both men and
women. Carbohydrate intake increased; protein intake
slightly increased; fat and sat fat intake decreased.
From 2000 to 2009-2010:
• There was a decrease in calories in both men and women.
Carbohydrate intake decreased; fat, sat fat and protein intake
increased.
From 2007-2008 to 2009-2010
 There was a decrease in calories in both men and women.
Carbohydrate intake decreased; fat, decreased sat fat
remained the same and protein intake increased for men and
decreased for women.

Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999–
2010 Key Findings:
 Caloric intakes for most of the age groups decreased
between 1999–2000 and 2009–2010.
 The percentage of total kilocalories from protein generally
increased for children and adolescents except for non-
Hispanic black girls.
 The percentage of total kilocalories from carbohydrate
decreased for non-Hispanic white boys and girls and for
non-Hispanic black boys.
 The percentage of total kilocalories from total fat or
saturated fat for children and adolescents changed very
little.
