2. • Field of plant pathology that deal with the study of viruses & virus like
pathogens
• Branch that deals with plant viruses is called “Plant Virology”
• Viruses are sub microscopic, infectious pathogens that are too small to be
seen with a light microscope

3. Virus: Viruses may be defined as submicroscopic, acellular,
obligate, intracellular parasites that infect plants
• genomes consist of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA
but never both),
• inside host cells using host metabolic machinery and
ribosomes to form a pool of components which
assemble into particles (coat protein) called VIRIONS,
• which serve to protect the genome and to transfer it to
other cells.
• A VIRUS is either DNA or RNA, that is protected by a
protein coat called a CAPSID.

4. • Virus is derived from Latin word which means – Poison (or) Venom (or) Slimy
liquid
• ‘A virus is a virus’, it is neither a living organism nor a non-living chemical, but
something between and betwixt
