Project da Vinci: Mood board Creation
To get a better feel of what I was developing I compiled a collection of images based solely in the
subject of anatomy, and then formatted them all into a single JPEG file entitled Anatomical
moodboard.

Project da Vinci: Anatomy Practice
I have begun developing my skills in the human anatomy and figure drawing, using different forms of
media and guides.
Today I started by using three different methods of creating a basic human figure, these methods
were as follows:
Box Method – The use of simple two dimensional boxes and circles to pin point where the
joints rotate.
Oval Method – The use of defined ovals and tonal markings to create a sense of depth
Hybrid Method using a mixture of different ideas.

Project da Vinci: Simple figure and pose Practice
Using my recent studies as a rough guide of the form and shape of the figure I developed a few basic
ideas of poses my characters could be placed in, this includes jogging, kneeling and walking.
Project da Vinci: Mind Map and ideas generation
Once these studies were complete I developed a mind map for the different assets of the game and
elements I would need to research such as the style of the game, time it was set in where the story
unfolds and the characters that will exist within the game.

Project da Vinci: The Male Skeleton Using information provided by various different websites I
sketched out sections of the human skeleton and named numerous of the major bones that enable
the figure to move.

Project da Vinci: Hand practice
For this exercise I didn’t use any third party references, all the studies were created from
observation of my own hand placed in different positions viewed from varied angles.
I completed this exercise using what I titled “The Pin Method” which is the use of dots and lines to
map out the shape and position of the study.
In this particular instance I viewed my hand in one simple position and four other more refined
positions.

Project da Vinci: Folds and Fabric Practice
In order to flesh out my characters in different poses and positions I needed to develop my skills
concerning clothing and any miscellaneous they may be equipped with.
I executed these studies by observing my fellow classmates and myself, attempting to express all the
different fabric and materials such as leather, denim, cotton and wool.
11/02/14
Project da Vinci: Folds and Fabric study
After practicing textures and fabric in small detail and proportion previously I now tried my hand at a
full study, I did this by asking my classmate if I could draw him in a specific pose for a portion of their
time, because I was focusing solely on fabric and detail I disregarded the face and wrists.
15/02/14
Project da Vinci: Stance and form practice
Once I returned to my work I was fairly surprised of the level at which my skills plummeted, making
it clear to me that I needed to be more consistent for the coming weeks.
Before putting down the pencil I somewhat refreshed my mind by sketching out some different
poses and figures to the best of my ability.
16/02/14
Project da Vinci: Eye ball and pupil practice
My goal today was to execute a fairly detailed and easy to make out life drawing, I started with a
draft and quickly noticed they eyes I had drawn were both facing alternate ways, which was not my
intention, so I quickly refreshed my memory by drawing a few simplistic two dimensional sketches of
3. pupils, this allowed me to correctly decide which eye would be facing which way and how to display
it.
16/02/14
Project da Vinci: Life drawing study
Using a mirror a b, 2b and 4b pencil and eraser I began a study of myself, keeping my upper body
straight so I could capture every detail.
This study was a means of practicing the shape of the upper body, details, fabric and tone.
Once completed the life study I added a few added features.
18/02/14
Project da Vinci: Figure shape and tonal practice
Armed with a 2b mechanical pencil and an eraser, using a toy action figure as reference I created an
approximately anatomically correct head, muscular chest and a light source for me to add any tonal
effects for depth.
20/02/14
Project da Vinci: Figure stance practice
As previously using the action figure for reference I proceeded to draw the figure excluding tone and
focusing more on stance and posture, the first was a failure leading me to jot down little doodles of
stickmen in different angles and forms to refresh my memory of flow, I later continued and the
figures began to appear more stable.
25/02/14
Project da Vinci: Anatomical research/studies
After looking back at my previous studies I realised I still haven’t learned enough about the
proportion and points at which the muscles were pinned on the body, for this reason I chose to
begin researching the human chest muscle structure, in hope that it would improve my knowledge
of the human structure and in turn improve my figure drawing.
26/02/14
Project da Vinci: Figure stance and upper body study
To my delight my previous anatomical research proved useful and my drawings are a little more
flowing rather than rigid.
Rather than producing a rough draft of the action figure, due to my new found research I was able to
draw the figure in different stances much more freely, I proceeded to practice the upper body as if it
4. were a 3d object projected on the page, taking note of the point at which the navel would appear,
at which angle I needed to draw the chest, sketching out a little 2D skeletal structure for reference.
27/02/14
Project da Vinci: Anatomical figure studies
I returned to drawing the action figure, this time in short time frames to see how much I could
include in a short time period, after my final 5 minute figure sketch I was left with 3 figures each at
different angles, proportions placed in different stances, the final showing more detail and
corrections than the others.
02/03/14
Project da Vinci: Further figure studies
After acquiring a few new tools to help me with my studies, such as a small wooden mannequin,
kneaded eraser and various other utensils I began placing the mannequin in several different
stances, standing or sitting at different angles so I produced a different perspective image each time.
05/03/14
Project da Vinci: Skeletal study
For my next study I placed myself in view of a life-size hanging skeletal structure and using a
standard 2b pencil I began focusing on the bones which allow the rotation of the wrist, adding tone
from the use of my light source all whilst maintaining the 3D effect.
I found that this study was a success and will prove useful as a reference for future studies.
07/03/14
Project da Vinci: Further mannequin practice and beginning of character creation
Returning to further practice the figure using the mannequin as a guide I created a further 6 figures
1 of which was created using a fine liner pen displaying the figure pointing towards something in the
distance whilst throwing with the other hand.
After creating these figures and gradually becoming more confident in my anatomy, I created a few
limited detail character profiles with a few drafts of what the characters may look like and how
muscular or agile they were, the first one being of the protagonist Da Vinci and the second of Lisa.
08/03/14
Project da Vinci: Further character description
On this day I used my time to add little snippets of detail to the character descriptions, such as eye
colour, facial hair, interests and the clothing they wore.

12/03/14
Project da Vinci: Further form development and pose study
After previously adding detail to the character descriptions and creating 2 of the four character
drafts I I now began to create a figure for the third character and antagonist Michelangelo. After
creating the base figure I next applied the figure to a pose in an environment alongside a brief
description.
I quickly noticed with this study I needed further practice with the hand proportion and shape.

15/03/14
Project da Vinci: Pose maniac reference studies
Using a supplied time limit and models to draw from I began a 30 second figure drawing online study
at which a new study would appear every 30 seconds, during this time I produced sketches of both
female and male of all different proportions and poses, but only limited limbs and features because
of the time frame I gave myself.
16/03/14
Project da Vinci: Axe Wielding figure study
Using a my previous pose practice as reference I quickly created an outline of an axe wielding figure
with their head tilted, and below a figure showing the back of them with their legs slightly crouched.

Project da Vinci: Further character concepts and items
After scanning through an array of dishonoured and darksiders images the work that I produced on
this day fitted more with the dark side of renaissance as the character concepts were of huge
proportion and seemed very unworldly, I created the concepts to add a bit of a twist to the game
giving it a unique extra.
25/03/14
Project da Vinci: Further Item development and life sketches
6. Using a 2b mechanical pencil I created two new weapon concepts a hound concept and a anomically
incorrect life drawing, after this study It has come to my attention I need to further develop my
anatomy skills in order for my finished concepts to appear to a good standard.
28/04/14
Project da Vinci: head, item and tonal progression
Now realising I may need to extend my deadline to a later date in order for work to be finished to a
good standard I began designing what the final structure may look like when altered, this being a
partly scientific game I decided to create mechanical appearing head shape of which may appear on
one of the characters at some point and alongside a staff like item that would be an extra alike the
unworldly concepts.
02/04/14
Project da Vinci: Life drawing progression
Firstly asking my younger sibling if I could use some of his time I began sketching out a base of what
a younger character may look like with the anatomical points in place, I then proceeded to draw a
more fuller study of my sibling displaying hair, nose eyes and limbs, I found this to be a useful
method of working.
06/04/14
Project da Vinci: Beginning Giovanni character concept
After many hours of anatomy research and figure practice I sketched out the first of my four final
character concepts, this one being the side character Giovanni, I began by designing the chest and
armour and then slowly progressed outward towards the shoulders adding the correct tonal effects
to the armoured plates.
06/04/14
After a short break I continued with the progression of the final first character concept, I used this
time to add texture weapons and lower body armour, upon completion Giovanni appeared as more
of a mercenary than assassin.
07/04/14
Giovanni concept now complete, after a brief observation of my concept I came to the conclusion
that the concept looked lifeless and the anatomy was far from my best efforts, and after spending a
small portion of my time in further anatomical research I began the second version of Giovanni this
time paying closer attention to detail and form.
7. 10/04/14
Giovanni 2.0 now complete I feel the concept was a much needed improvement and I’m pleased
that I took the time to renew the concept, like most ideas this one came with a minor issue, which I
found to be the shape of the hands and wrist of the new design.
15/04/14
After completing Giovanni and keeping my anatomy in check, I took a little time designing possible
extras which the characters may wield, 4 weapons were designed in total, the first with 3 demonic
heads floating above a stream of smoke on top of a cracked orb, the second was a zero gravity dual
wield, a chakram, and finally a polearm which would be wielded by masked Michelangelo.
17/04/14
Back into the initial production of the characters I began work on the main character da Vinci himself
using a 3D muscular action figure as an overall guide, keeping many of the visual references heavily
based around the modern instalments created by the BBC, such as the leather jacket, jeans and belt.
20/04/14
After spending the past few days focusing on Da Vinci’s overall appearance I finally feel like I have
the facial features how I envisioned them and only the finishing touches remain.
25/04/14
All character concepts are now finished for Giovanni, Michelangelo, Lisa and Da Vinci each using
different methods of presentation and development.
