Portfolio - Overview
The following slides detail the elements that support my
application toArts University Bournemouth. They consist of:
• AS Level project (DT) – Workspace Organiser
• A2 Level project (DT) – Portable Workspace
• AS Level project (ART) – Horror
• A2 Level project (ART) – What brings me joy
• Photography
• Digital Art Work
• Woodwork Experimentation
• CAD – Miscellaneous Examples
My chosen context for first year A Level was space. I looked into many products
which are on the market that are space efficient, being either fold away and storage
items, or organiser products. I explored many items that fall under this category but
an idea I wanted to carry forward was a workspace organiser. Once I’d chosen
this pathway for my project, I had to decide on a target user/audience for the
product. For this, I chose my older brother; a Graphic Designer. Due to coronavirus,
he had to work from a desk within his room, using a selection of items. I thought
he’d benefit from a product like this and therefore worked with him to develop ideas
and gain further knowledge. I then developed my design brief for the product, as
seen on the right.
I carried out a target user trip, along with other research, looking at
his workspace and the pieces of equipment he uses often. From
doing this, it enabled me to consider how his working environment
can be improved to create a calmer and tidier working atmosphere for
AS Level DT Project – Workspace Organiser
Idea Development
Here, I developed a wide variety of ideas through a selection of sketches
and designs that could potentially be carried forward and made into the
final piece. Through doing this, I was able to really consider different
shapes and the composition ideas of features on this
workspace organiser. I was able to see what works well and effectively
and where there is potential for improvement.
Final Design
Due to Coronavirus causing a series of
lockdowns, I didn’t get to finish making my final
product out of the material I intended to use. If I
had the chance to properly manufacture this
product, I would have used Plywood, keeping
it with a natural finish in order to fit in with my
target user’s working environment.
The image above shows my final prototype in use, with all compartments being
used properly with different pieces of equipment stored in each section. The
different features are all made to the correct size, meaning the image
demonstrates the product realistically.
I carried out another target user trip in order to re-evaluate
the user’s desires for this product, allowing me to see the
prototype in use, and how it could be adapted and
improved. I took a photograph of their workspace and
annotated it, showing the products that he has on his desk
daily. This can be seen on the bottom right. After
discussing with the target user, I found that their needs
and wants for this product had changed due to
the pandemic and so he was able to travel, meaning
working on the go, this was something I had to consider
when developing later designs, and decided to change the
direction of my product into a portable workspace.
From deciding to continue
in the direction of a
portable workspace, I
developed a mood board
of different products on the
market. The mood board
on the right displays the
items I wanted to use as
inspiration when moving
onto producing a
collection of ideas.
A2 Level DT Project – Portable Workspace
Idea Development
I produced a selection of different portable workspace ideas, these all included a
range of different features. I decided to include some elements on the top of the
workspace; these being a cup and device holder. However, I adapted my idea
while designing, making it easier for the user to transport, while supplying them
with a storage area for their laptop. As you can see in the designs, I added a
strap to one of the designs, meaning the user can carry it on their shoulder when
walking, making it multi-functional.
When testing out different
design ideas, I developed a
collection of both physical
and digital prototypes. I
created the one below
through the use of Onshape,
this was one of my basic lap
desk designs. This didn’t
include the laptop ‘slot in’
feature as I was
experimenting with my ideas
through the software.
Current WorkingPrototype
As I am still working on my current project, the pictures above display my current working prototype that I have user
tested. This is made out of corrugated cardboard but I intend for the final piece to be manufactured through different
processes including laser cutting using plywood. This prototype is of the size I intend my final product to be,
ensuring enough space inside for the laptop to be stored, as well as enough surface space for a laptop to be used.
The theme I chose for first year Art A levels was 'Horror'. This was an enjoyable topic for me as it’s a genre I
am very fond of. I was able to explore a wide scope of different elements throughout, with Tim Burton being a
large source of inspiration. I carried out a lot of research looking at a variety of different artists, using these to
develop my later design ideas. Above I have included some of my favourite pieces from my project which I
created through the use of different media. To created the Tim Burton character on the right, I used Modroc to
build up the page, giving a 3D effect, adding texture to my pages.
AS Level Art Project - Horror
The piece on the right is a collection of sketches. The sketches took inspiration from photographs I had taken as well
as Tim Burton pieces. I completed these through using a range of different biro pens. Although these are simple
outlines and sketches, I am pleased with how these have turned out.
The picture on the left shows the design idea
plan for the piece I created. Here I looked at
the different elements I wanted to take from my
previous work and incorporated them within my
piece. I wanted to paint three square
canvases and have a selection of different
things on each one. On one of the canvases,
I planned to have an assortment of different
weapons, using mostly acrylic paint as well
as foil on the different blades, adding a
metallic effect. On another canvas, I planned
to use two pieces inspired by Kaitlyn
Williams. I created these through the use of
oil pastel, allowing me to blend the colours
together easily. And finally, the last included
a Tim Burton building drawn in pen with
different character sketches stitched into
them, along with a painted key inspired by
Idea Development
Final Design
I am very fond of the final outcome of my final piece pictured above, I find the three tie in very well with each other,
taking different aspects of my theme and using these to produce three very different designs for each canvas. I find the
bold backgrounds work well and I decided to add blood splatters to each, linking them all together, adding to the effect.
I took photographs of my dogs and recreated them
through simple but effective continuous line drawings.
When considering ‘what brings me joy’, I looked at a range of aspects within my life. My dogs are most definitely a
key factor so I wanted to include these within my project. I found work by Sally Muir and David Hockney, both of which
had different styles of work. I created a variety of continuous line drawings on my iPad using Procreate. These were
studies from different angles of each of my dogs and I decided to create one of them in lino print. This worked
extremely well and the outcome was successful, especially through pairing contrasting colours when matching
A2 Level Art Project – ‘What Brings Me
Joy’ Idea Development
Idea Development
Harlan Pradana is an artist that I found and I would like to incorporate elements of
their work in my final design, this is because although it is simple, I think it is very
effective as the intricate line work is very detailed. I thoroughly enjoyed recreating
photographs from Edinburgh in this line drawing style.
The unfinished
outline on the left is
based on a
photograph that I
took in Edinburgh. I
feel this style works
really well with this
city, complimenting
the old architecture.
I love photography, being
able to capture such a
wide scope of different
places, people, animals
and scenes through the
lens. I especially enjoy
taking photos when
travelling, documenting
trips through an array of
Photography
I took the photograph above when on a trip to the south of
France. I captured this when travelling on a boat along
the Gorges Du Verdon. I decided to take this image and
illustrate it using Procreate on my iPad, using a variation
of tones taken from the photograph.
These pieces to the left
were created taking
great inspiration from a
digital artist, Sushama
Patel. I wanted to reflect
her style through
creating images of my
own,
demonstratin
g different activities I
get up to throughout my
day.

Whilst trying out different manufacturing methods during first year of A
Levels, I created these wooden pieces. They were all done through a
range of methods and techniques. Through completing these different
pieces, I was able to widen my knowledge of different methods used and
what materials worked well for each.

Work
Throughout A Levels, I have been able to extend my knowledge of different CAD platforms and have
used them throughout my projects to experiment and trial different ideas. The work presented was
created using three different platforms. 2D Design is where I've designed pieces that are to be laser
cut for my project. I have used Pro/DESKTOP and Onshape in order to create 3D prototypes and
mock-ups for the project, along with trialing different pieces before-hand.

After discussing with the target user, I found that their needs and wants for this product had changed due to the pandemic and so he was able to travel, meaning working on the go, this was something I had to consider when developing later designs, and decided to change the direction of my product into a portable workspace. From deciding to continue in the direction of a portable workspace, I developed a mood board of different products on the market. The mood board on the right displays the items I wanted to use as inspiration when moving onto producing a collection of ideas. A2 Level DT Project – Portable Workspace
  • 7. Idea Development I produced a selection of different portable workspace ideas, these all included a range of different features. I decided to include some elements on the top of the workspace; these being a cup and device holder. However, I adapted my idea while designing, making it easier for the user to transport, while supplying them with a storage area for their laptop. As you can see in the designs, I added a strap to one of the designs, meaning the user can carry it on their shoulder when walking, making it multi-functional. When testing out different design ideas, I developed a collection of both physical and digital prototypes. I created the one below through the use of Onshape, this was one of my basic lap desk designs. This didn’t include the laptop ‘slot in’ feature as I was experimenting with my ideas through the software.
  • 8. Current WorkingPrototype As I am still working on my current project, the pictures above display my current working prototype that I have user tested. This is made out of corrugated cardboard but I intend for the final piece to be manufactured through different processes including laser cutting using plywood. This prototype is of the size I intend my final product to be, ensuring enough space inside for the laptop to be stored, as well as enough surface space for a laptop to be used.
  • 9. The theme I chose for first year Art A levels was 'Horror'. This was an enjoyable topic for me as it’s a genre I am very fond of. I was able to explore a wide scope of different elements throughout, with Tim Burton being a large source of inspiration. I carried out a lot of research looking at a variety of different artists, using these to develop my later design ideas. Above I have included some of my favourite pieces from my project which I created through the use of different media. To created the Tim Burton character on the right, I used Modroc to build up the page, giving a 3D effect, adding texture to my pages. AS Level Art Project - Horror
  • 10. The piece on the right is a collection of sketches. The sketches took inspiration from photographs I had taken as well as Tim Burton pieces. I completed these through using a range of different biro pens. Although these are simple outlines and sketches, I am pleased with how these have turned out. The picture on the left shows the design idea plan for the piece I created. Here I looked at the different elements I wanted to take from my previous work and incorporated them within my piece. I wanted to paint three square canvases and have a selection of different things on each one. On one of the canvases, I planned to have an assortment of different weapons, using mostly acrylic paint as well as foil on the different blades, adding a metallic effect. On another canvas, I planned to use two pieces inspired by Kaitlyn Williams. I created these through the use of oil pastel, allowing me to blend the colours together easily. And finally, the last included a Tim Burton building drawn in pen with different character sketches stitched into them, along with a painted key inspired by Idea Development
  • 11. Final Design I am very fond of the final outcome of my final piece pictured above, I find the three tie in very well with each other, taking different aspects of my theme and using these to produce three very different designs for each canvas. I find the bold backgrounds work well and I decided to add blood splatters to each, linking them all together, adding to the effect.
  • 12. I took photographs of my dogs and recreated them through simple but effective continuous line drawings. When considering ‘what brings me joy’, I looked at a range of aspects within my life. My dogs are most definitely a key factor so I wanted to include these within my project. I found work by Sally Muir and David Hockney, both of which had different styles of work. I created a variety of continuous line drawings on my iPad using Procreate. These were studies from different angles of each of my dogs and I decided to create one of them in lino print. This worked extremely well and the outcome was successful, especially through pairing contrasting colours when matching A2 Level Art Project – ‘What Brings Me Joy’ Idea Development
  • 13. Idea Development Harlan Pradana is an artist that I found and I would like to incorporate elements of their work in my final design, this is because although it is simple, I think it is very effective as the intricate line work is very detailed. I thoroughly enjoyed recreating photographs from Edinburgh in this line drawing style. The unfinished outline on the left is based on a photograph that I took in Edinburgh. I feel this style works really well with this city, complimenting the old architecture.
  • 14. I love photography, being able to capture such a wide scope of different places, people, animals and scenes through the lens. I especially enjoy taking photos when travelling, documenting trips through an array of Photography
  • 15. I took the photograph above when on a trip to the south of France. I captured this when travelling on a boat along the Gorges Du Verdon. I decided to take this image and illustrate it using Procreate on my iPad, using a variation of tones taken from the photograph. These pieces to the left were created taking great inspiration from a digital artist, Sushama Patel. I wanted to reflect her style through creating images of my own, demonstratin g different activities I get up to throughout my day. Pieces created while exploring the adobe suite, using both Photoshop and Illustrator. Digital Artwork
  • 16. Surfboard Keyring Love spoon Whilst trying out different manufacturing methods during first year of A Levels, I created these wooden pieces. They were all done through a range of methods and techniques. Through completing these different pieces, I was able to widen my knowledge of different methods used and what materials worked well for each. Incense Holder Woodwork Experimentation
  • 17. Pro/DESKT OP Onshap e Computer Aided Design Work Throughout A Levels, I have been able to extend my knowledge of different CAD platforms and have used them throughout my projects to experiment and trial different ideas. The work presented was created using three different platforms. 2D Design is where I've designed pieces that are to be laser cut for my project. I have used Pro/DESKTOP and Onshape in order to create 3D prototypes and mock-ups for the project, along with trialing different pieces before-hand. 2D Design
