1. Project da Vinci: Evaluation
The aim of Project da Vinci was to use all the skills I have acquired to this point and lead and
develop 4 character concepts to be used by Ubisoft in the future release title Renaissance.
Renaissance would contain many of the elements you would see in their blockbuster series
Assassins creed with other sequences containing the polymath in his anatomical and
creative studies, this would give the player a feel for what it was like to live in the age of the
Italian renaissance as one of the world’s most profound individuals.
For my first task I needed to research different forms of media, which featured aspects of
the Renaissance and what kind of affect it had on the early 14-15th century, whilst revising
Davinci’s history and anatomical studies.
I collected numerous different forms of research about both the Italian renaissance,
Davinci’s studies, how it was implemented into past games and films it has inspired.
I was very happy with the work and effort I put in to this task and if I were to improve
anything I would add a section for an in depth description about the developer of the titles
and their market.
My second task was to generate ideas for my chosen concept and all aspects of the projects
management. I came up with many different ideas using a broad range of sources such as
moodboards, mind maps, Character profiles, anatomical diagrams and more. When looking
back on the finished project I feel I should have prioritised my time management and the
business elements of the project, definitely something I would focus on when I come to
starting another project.
For my third assignment I had to produce a pitch for my final chosen concept and present it
in front of one of my project managers in a set time provided by me, the feedback from this
concept would then allow me to begin production and character development.
Many of the required elements were included into my pitch and through my chosen
presentation media I faced many technical difficulties which lead to the corruption of my
finished pitch, this of course delayed both the time I agreed to deliver my pitch and the
overall detail of the concept.
If I were to redo things in a different manner I would definitely keep 2 copies of my
documents, one offline Microsoft document and the other uploaded in a presentation on a
site such as blogger.
2. My fourth task was to plan out the means and time I would need in order to succeed in the
production of project da Vinci, which to me seemed fairly straightforward at the time, they
were as followed
Choose my selected amount of historical figures and identify their achievements and
necessity to the Italian renaissance.
Redefine them to look the part of the chosen concept
Produce sketch sheets of the developed character concepts and present to an
audience.
When completing this task I did not include a budget or any other business aspect of the
project, which would have helped keep the project to a near professional standard.
This is one of the many issues I would resolve if I were to do things differently on another
project.
The next stage of the project was the most vital, production phase, for this I had one goal, to
produce 4 anatomically correct character concepts displayed in a multitude of different
poses and motions.
When beginning production of my characters I found everything to be going smoothly as far
as detail, description and theme, but throughout the points in production time my biggest
concern was form, even when for most of the concepts I used a 3D figure for anatomical
reference, although the form and figure my biggest issue was making the characters look
like they were in motion within the sketch.
After finally finishing the production long after my set deadline I needed to present my end
product in the correct layout demonstrating the character in motion displaying flow and
movement.
Due to my inability to develop the characters how I first imagined them, some of the many
features I depended on were not in my possession, this of course affected the presentation
and how the characters were put on show.
I feel I did not achieve the finished project as I first envisioned it during the earlier stages,
and if I were to reproduce this or a similar concept I would try to set my expectations a little
lower until I have developed my skills in the fundamental fields of anatomy and figure
drawing.
