The document discusses various editing techniques used to create a thriller effect in a short film, including:
- Using cross dissolve transitions between scenes to prevent an abrupt cut and build tension.
- Adding black and white footage, piano music, and increasing audio levels to create an ominous tone during a scene of a character digging.
- Employing zoom tools to draw focus to important props or expressions and add dramatic effect during jump scare moments.
- Including loud sting effects synchronized with actions to startle viewers.
- Choosing a red and white title design representing blood and ghosts to fit the thriller genre.
2. Transitions
Here’s where I used a cross dissolve
transition for my film I used a few of these
for my film to stop the film form just
shooting from scene to scene this makes sure
it goes at the right pace and that it drags out
the thriller effect. I dragged out some of the
transitions longer than others to add effect
to cutting to scenes and making sure the
music sets in with the scenes as since it’s a
thriller a slow build up will create more
tension.
3. Visuals/thriller music
I took out the color to this scene and added quite piano music to
really give it that thriller effect also I turned the Audio gain up
on Dylan digging so you could hear the sound of the shovel mix
with the piano works well when he's doing something suspicious.
I added black and white by going on effects, color and black and
white, I did this for the dialogue as this is the start of the film of
him digging a hole and since the films called the kidnapping you
can start guessing already what he gets kidnapped for. I added
the black and white as it’s more of a dark feel where you get
yourself in the film. Its non-diegetic audio so only we can hear
the back track. Also the shovel shows thriller iconography as
this is equipment you use to dig graves it also makes you look
very suspicious if your carrying a shovel around which is why I
increased the digging audio and mixed it with black and white
scenery for the thriller iconography effect.
4. Zoom tool
I used the zoom tool twice in my short film I did this the first time to
hide the person behind him as he goes to hit him where I put a
thriller sting its to add the effect of a jump scare also I used it the
second time for you to focus on what he's doing with the broken
pieces of plate and how he cuts the rope it adds dramatic effect on
both scenes. Another way I use the zoom tool is when I'm doing a
longshot, it helps me zoom in on the characters expressions, Instead
of having to cut and show it. Also it shows body language and items of
significance as example the plate is cutting the rope so I zoomed in
on it to show the Important prop.
5. Sting effect
I added a jump scare by finding a free use video of
jump scare noises and taken one and turned the
audio gain up by 18pt so that It’s really loud and
give people a shock also I synced it as the plate
smashed so you can really get the thriller effect
out of it. Also It’s a non-diegetic sound effect so
only we can hear it. The reason I use the sting
effect is because its well known technique
throughout the industry and is commonly used
through the thriller/horror genre
6. Title
This is the title I used for my film as its not only a thriller title its also nice
and simple for finding my product. I used a red and white color theme to
represent blood as well as the blood lust font I downloaded of da font. I used
these fonts to represent the thriller theme as it has to do with blood and
horror. Also for the intro I done a roll to from on screen to off screen to add
again a thriller effect of it disappearing also I added my company logo I
created to try and make the film look more professional but in the end I wish
I made the logo more of dark colors and more of a thriller effect to my film
the colors ruin it a bit. Red also represents rage and white represents ghost
which are a few other reasons I picked that color theme for the title. I also
done the same roll effects for my logo with the roll effect which I should of
done something else for variety.
7. Timing/pace/tempo
This is where I timed an audio file as they character realizes his
victim has escaped by adding a non-diegetic drumming beat.
This creates tension again as it’s a chase scene and since it’s a
thriller genre this is commonly used and makes the film better
by changing up the pace of slow and dragging it out to a fast
interesting chase scene this gives the full thriller experience.
8. Audio
I added another sting effect to the final scene of my film and also
a knocking out having these two at the same time finishes of my
film with a thriller ending as someone always get hurt or killed
this is just the narrative code of how thrillers goes which is what I
followed considering my editing of stings(jump scares)
9. Ending title sequence
This is the ending to my thriller where I give credit to all the music I used
and my actors I played this with sad music to end it as I wanted to create a
sad ending as the kidnapper gets knocked out as he wasn’t all bad so it
was my way of ending it and I made the credit scene roll like star wars as I
feel it gives the aesthetic look so my film will end with a thriller narrative.
