What Does „Work/Life Balance‟ Look and Feel Like at CG?
Personal - What I think makes CG effective is that our culture is one where we’re driven to help clients succeed, but
we also value the individual. If someone is driven to advance on an accelerated schedule, we support that. If someone
needs to take time off to raise a child or address a family issue, we support that. Or…if someone is happy at their level,
there’s no pressure to continue to advance.
Non-Threatening – I don’t have to justify my decision to take time I need (within reason) or consider career
tradeoffs. This starts at the top and is seen throughout the leaders’ attitudes around making sure the employee (and
family) are doing OK. It is expressed in genuine care and concern for simple life things – what’d you do this weekend,
where you going on vacation, how are the kids. The sense of family is important to get that feel.
Empowering – when I feel like I’m in control of my life and my career, I am more fulfilled and look
forward to coming to work and give my best.
Responsive - I can't be everywhere at once, so as long as my team is responsive to client needs and
our weekly routines, I don't worry about whether or not our consultants are working from home.
Trusting - CG leaders don’t micro-manage their consultants. They trust them to get the work done for our clients
in a way that works best for them as long as the client’s expectations are met. Flexibility and trust go a long way and
in the end the consultant works harder for CG and for our clients.

What are the Biggest Challenges We Face in Trying to Maintain Balance?
Turning it off and walking away. When you love your job and the firm you work for,
sometimes the desire to keep going can blur the lines.
CG helps me in this area by focusing on the quality of the relationships I build and
quality of the work I deliver, without over-emphasizing the hours I am working.
It's just natural, that as you add more and more people who are remote, that certain parts
of our culture are harder to observe on a day-to-day basis. We need our senior leaders in
the firm to be good "virtual" managers in this day and age.
While it’s manageable to maintain balance and satisfy the client’s expectations, it’s difficult
to work full-time for the client and participate in CG initiatives. A certain level of “personal
investment” is required to grow at CG.
