A short note on mental illness. Prepared as the part of B.Ed curriculum for the 4th semester B.Ed students. Contains a short description on mental illness, its symptoms and prevention.

2. WHAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS?
 Mental illness are health
conditions involving changes in
thinking, emotion or behaviour (or
a combination of these). Mental
illness are associated with distress
and/or problems functioning in
social work or family activities.

3.  Mental illness is treatable. The vast
majority of individuals with mental
illness continue to function in their
daily life. Mental illness does not
discriminate. It can affect anyone
regardless of your age, gender,
income, social status, race, ethnicity,
etc. while mental illness can occur at
any stage or age, three-forth of mental
illness begins by age 24.

4. SYMPTOMS
 In adults, young adults and adolescents
a. Confused thinking.
b. Feelings of extremely high and lows.
c. Excessive fears, worries and anxiety.
d. Dramatic changes in eating or
sleeping habits.
e. Strong feelings of anger (delusion).
f. Suicidal thoughts.

5.  In younger children
a) Changes in school performance.
b) Poor grades despite strong
efforts.
c) Changes in sleeping and/or
eating habits.
d) Excessive worry or anxiety.

6. PREVENTION
Pay attention to warning
signs.
Get routine medical care.
Get help when you needed it.
Take good care of yourself.
