2. Redemption
• Our thriller had many inspirations and many
influences. Upon making our Thriller we noticed
the similarities and differences that it had to
other forms of media.
• I found three films, The Cube, The Hunger Games
and Deerhunter. One TV show, Derren Browns
live Russian Roulette stunt and One Music Video,
Rhianna’s Russian roulette video. They all had
similar concepts, setting and content.
3. Idea behind Our Final Piece
• Russian roulette
• noun
• the practice of loading a bullet into one
chamber of a revolver, spinning the cylinder,
and then pulling the trigger while pointing the
gun at one's own head.
– an activity that is potentially very dangerous.
• "we can't afford to play Russian Roulette with
our existing antibiotics"
4. The cube vs Redemption
The cube
Six different people, each form a very different
walk of life, awaken to find themselves inside a
giant cube with thousands of possible rooms.
Each has a skill that becomes clear when they
must band together to get out. Each plays a part
in their thrilling quest to find answers as to why
they’ve been imprisoned. IMDB
5. The cube vs Redemption
Redemption
A an action packed thriller based on a series of
games that are controlled by higher forces.
Jamie Grey must battle to the death in order to
win his ultimate freedom.
6. Similarities
• They have similar story lines
• Both The Cube and Redemption are based off
of a series of tasks and challenges.
• They both feature groups of people that
would not normally come together
• They are both controlled by higher forces
7. Side by side
The cube, we see our male
character face a dilemma. His
face is angled away from the
camera and slightly off centre.
Redemption, we see the same
sort of shot here. Our male
protagonist faces a dilemma
on weather he should shot the
gun.
8. Differences
• The cube is based in a series of challenges in a
load of different rooms, a maze.
• Redemption is based in several locations as a
whole. It’s all done to look quite grimy and like
not a lot of effort has gone into it.
•
9. The Hunger Games vs Redemption
• The hunger games
• Katniss Everdeen volunteers in her younger sister's place to
enter the games, and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts
as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch
Abernathy when she's pitted against highly-trained Tributes
who have prepared for these Games their entire lives. If she's
ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make
impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against
humanity and life against love.- google
10. The Hunger Games franchise vs
Redemption
Redemption
A an action packed thriller based on a series of
games that are controlled by higher forces.
Jamie Grey must battle to the death in order to
win his ultimate freedom.
11. Similarities
• Both have similar concepts.
• A group of young individuals are selected and
forced to compete in a series of games, to
battle to the death. This is the case for both
films.
• They are all competing for their freedom.
12. Side by side
Taken from the hunger games’ cornucopia
scene. We see an aerial shot of a majority of
the competitors, setting up the surrounding.
It shows us in greater depth what is going on
around them.
In Redemption, we had an aerial
shot to show the whole
surrounding similar to THG. In
order to do this we mounted the
camera on a jib and moved out
at a fast pace.
13. Differences
• THG there is a young competitor age and a
larger group.
• Redemption, it’s a much smaller group and
our male character is planted to win.
• The games and challenges are slightly
different.
14. Dear hunter vs Redemption
Dear hunter
• In 1968, Michael , Nick and Steven, lifelong
friends from a working-class Pennsylvania steel
town, prepare to ship out overseas following
Steven's elaborate wedding and one final group
hunting trip. In Vietnam, their dreams of military
honor are quickly shattered by the inhumanities
of war; even those who survive are haunted by
the experience, as is Nick's hometown
sweetheart, Linda. Google
15. Dear hunter vs Redemption
Redemption
A an action packed thriller based on a series of
games that are controlled by higher forces.
Jamie Grey must battle to the death in order to
win his ultimate freedom.
16. Similarities
• Although plot lines are completely different,
there is one scene that is incredibly similar.
• Both contain a Russian roulette scene
• Both feature a foreign language.
17. Side by side
Dear hunter shows three
men sat around a table in
which they’re about to play
Russian roulette. The gun is
In the middle of the table. It
has been placed in the
middle by one of the
characters. Wide shot
Redemption, we see three
people in a dingy setting
around a gun that has been
placed in the middle by the
leader of the game. Wide
shot.
18. Differences
• In this scene, they’re shooting themselves
where as in Redemption they’re shooting each
other.
• The characters are energetic where as our
characters are limp and lifeless.
19. Derren Brown (Russian roulette stunt)
vs Redemption
Derren brown
Derren Brown, the illusionist who claimed he
was playing Russian roulette on television using
a live bullet. Placed in the chamber by a
volunteer who was not held accountable for the
actions that were taken.
20. Derren brown (Russian roulette stunt)
vs Redemption
Redemption
A an action packed thriller based on a series of
games that are controlled by higher forces.
Jamie Grey must battle to the death in order to
win his ultimate freedom
21. Side by side
We were inspired by Derren in this scene, we
therefore decided to base our character (john)
off of him. In the sense that he manipulates the
people playing the game.
Both have very grimmy and dingy settings that
contribute to the overall affect.
They both show control over the gun.
They both use a 6 chamber
revolver gun and wear a black
suit. They both are well
groomed. But Derren speaks
English and john speaks
Bulgarian.
22. Differences
• Derren brown used mind games to control the
situation.
• One was a documentary and it was live.
• Derren had the gun to his own head.
• Different languages are spoken.
23. Rhianna vs Redemption
• The music video opens with shots of Rihanna hooded, lying on the
floor of a gas chamber. Three men, dressed in black uniforms and
wearing dark round glasses circulate around the singer, attempting
to extort information from her. Rihanna sits at a table with her love
interest opposite. On the table between them lies a silver revolver
in which, throughout the video, they take it turns holding to their
heads. Other scenes include Rihanna in a woodland at night
standing in the middle of a highway before a car speeds towards
her, quickly cutting to another scene, giving the impression she is
run over. Elements of blood and tears and vehicular assault
dominate the video. The final scenes, Rihanna is shown
underwater, floating whilst being fired at; one bullet is visually seen
cutting her throat. The video ends with her lover apparently
committing suicide with the revolver placed between them.
24. Rhianna vs Redemption
Redemption
A an action packed thriller based on a series of
games that are controlled by higher forces.
Jamie Grey must battle to the death in order to
win his ultimate freedom.
25. Similarities
• Both media forms feature a game of russian
roulette
• Both have a male lead character
• Both focus on trying to control the other
characters.
26. Side by side
Here we see emphasis on the gun as
it is the focal point of the scene. As
the gun is the main point in the
game of Russian Roulette.
With the gun being pretty
much the Centre of the shot,
the audiences attention goes
straight to the gun.
27. Differences
• one is a music video and one a film
• Rhianna had more male characters as well as
seeing the powers that be behind it.
• Redemption had one singular man in control.
• We did not see the people designing the
games/ tasks.
