3. Catgut is a type of cord[1] made from sheep or
goat intestines[2]. It is a natural fiber as it is
made from the intestines of sheep or goat.
Before 1900, it was the best strings for musical
instruments(Violin, Acoustic guiter, harps,
lutes,snare drums) were reputedly from
Italy.Presently, it is still used in high quality
musical instruments. It is also used in medical
surgical settings and tennis racquets[3].So we
hypothesized that, it is possible to replace the
synthetic strings/laces by catgut strings as
footwear material.
Background:
5. To replace the conventional laces in
footwear by catgut strings.
To produce an ecofriendly footwear
material.
Objectives:
6. 1.Washing/Cleaning:
Put the sheep intestines into cold water.
Soak it on water for 2 days.
Then put them on hot water.
Add some surfactants
(If necessary).
Proposed
Manufacturing
Process
7. 2.Alkaline treatment:
Soak the intestines on chemical solution
which is lye based (Usually NaOH or KOH
is used).
Bleach it with H2O2 .
3.Bleaching:
8. 4.Cutting:
Cut the tube/intestines into
straps/ribbons
The strips are twisted together
with a twisting machine.
5.Twisting:
Strips are twisted tightly until
they are glued together.
9. 6.Drying:
Dry it at room temperature
Polish and round the strings
using a center less grinder.
7.Polishing:
Often rubbed with almond or
other oil to prevent becoming
brittle.
11. 1) Can be use as an shoe lace instead of
conventional lace.
2) Can be use as sandal straps instead of
leather straps.
3) Can be used as a specialized cord in
hand stitching on moccasin shoe.
4) Can be used on different fashionable
topline treatment of shoes.
