3. The Bulgarian lands are known as
‘swing of the ancient culture’.
Here the first processed gold has
been found. The tombstone of
Kazanlak is part of UNESCO as a
world cultural achievement.
A Thracian was the famous Orpheus.
The capital –
Sofia has appeared more than 2 700 years ago
and is one of the oldest capitals in the world.

4. During the second century Bulgarians
come from Asia into Europe and create
a union around the sea of Azon. After its
break-up they are displaced and part of
them with khan Asparuh reach the Danube
river. In the year of 680 the Bulgarians
defeat the Byzantine troops and settle
down south from lower Danube. Here in
a union with the Slavic tribes which
came earlier, khan Asparuh founds his own
new Bulgarian country.

Khan Tervel defeats the Arabian
troops near Constantinople in the
year of 718 and stops their rush
towards Central Europe.
In the reign of khan Krum during
the ninth century Bulgaria is maybe
the third most powerful country in
Europe. In 864 the Bulgarian ruler
Boris I accepts Christianity together
with his whole nation.

Simeon The Great is
proclaimed as first Bulgarian
king (or emperor). Bulgaria
becomes a Christian cultural
centre of the Slavic through the
Slavic alphabet - third in
Europe after the Greek and
Latin ones. The creators of this
writing Cyril and Methodius
are proclaimed for co-patrons
of Europe in 1980.

After the Byzantine
domination (from the year of
1014 to 1185) Bulgaria becomes
stronger, expands and becomes
again an influential empire in
the reign of Ivan Asen the
Second (1218-1241). From 1396
to 1878 Bulgarians are under
the authority of the Ottoman
Turks. They survive as a nation
thanks to their Christian faith,
their language and traditional
culture.

nineteenth century some
prominent figures of the
Bulgarian Renaissance are
Paisius of Hilendar, Georgi
Rakovski, Vasil Levski, Hristo
Botev and many other
fighters for freedom and
independence. In the year of
1878 supported by Russia
the Bulgarians restore their
country.

Nikola Petrov is
pronounced as the
strongest man of the
nineteenth century.
Bulgarians first use
aviation as a military
means. The Bulgarian John
Atanasov is acknowledged
in the USA for the father of
the computer. We have

Bulgaria entered
NATO and the EU.
Now the Republic
of Bulgaria is a
chairman of the
EU.
