Biomolecules are large molecules that occur naturally in living organisms and include carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Carbohydrates are the most abundant biomolecule and are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. They serve as a major energy source for organisms and can take the form of monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, or polysaccharides depending on the number of monosaccharide units they contain.
