ways of conveying what someone else
has said:
â«direct/quoted speech and
â«indirect/reported speech.

What is it?
Direct/quoted speech, involvesquoting the exact
words uttered by the person, within inverted
commasorquotation marks.
2nd September 2012 Anne said, âI will
be coming home
tonightâ.

Indirect/reported speech, on theother hand, does
not have to be within quotes or reported word-to-
word. In fact, unless one is relaying the exact words
spoken, oneshould neveruse quotation marks.

would be coming

5. Indirect Speech of Exclamatory Sentences
Sentencewhich expresses stateof joyorsorrow or
wonder is called exclamatory sentence.
Forexample.
â«Hurrah! Wewon the match.
â«Alas! I failed the test.
â«Wow! Whata nice shirt it is.
6. To change such sentences, the words âexclaimed with
joyâ or âexclaimed with sorrowâ or âexclaimed with
wonderâ is added in the reporting verb depending upon
the nature of exclamatory sentence in indirect speech.

7. Indirect Speech of Imperative
Sentence
A sentencewhich expresses command, request, adviceor
suggestion is called imperative sentence.
Forexample,
âą Open thedoor.
âą Please help me.
âą Learn your lesson.
8. To change such sentences into indirect speech, the word
âorderedâ or ârequestedâ or âadvisedâ or âsuggestedâ or
âforbadeâ or ânot to doâ is added to reporting verb
depending upon nature of imperative sentence in reported
speech.

The teacher advised the students

9. Indirect Speech for Interrogative (Question)
Sentence
Forchanging interrogative (question) sentence into indirect
speech we have to observe the nature of question and then
change it into indirect speech according to it rules for
indirect speech.
A questioncan beof two types:
â«One typewhich can beanswered in only YES or NO and
â«Othertypewhich needs a little bitexplanation for its
answerand cannot be answered in only YES or NO.

Indirect Speech: They asked me if I had gone to school.

When we use reported speech, we are usually
talking about the past.
Therefore, verbs usually change to the past tense
in reported speech.
